You'd be amazed how well you speak Japanese when you're forced to.

In my case, most of my Japanese was simply picked up from watching tons of anime and Japanese live-action. In no way do I advocate learning Japanese in this manner, but you pick up the language whether you like it or not. Nowadays, my knowledge of the spoken language is so great that I can spot mistakes in subbed anime. For example, check out gg's newest episode of Highschool of the Dead, episode 9. At the very end of the episode when Takagi says, "Mon, agete!", which gg subs translates that into, "Open already!" though it's supposed to be "Open door!". However, what I think gg subs did was misinterpret the Japanese as, "Mou, agete!", which would then make sense as that means, "Open already" as "mon" means door.

Though Taiwanese, I happen to have Japanese relatives living in Taiwan, and I think it was the summer of 2007 that my parents and I went over to Japan and met with my relatives. For a person that mainly learned his Japanese by watching a shitload of anime/live-action, they were pretty impressed, nor did I try to do weaboo stuff like "desu" "nano-desu" or "degozaru". If anything, I was proud of my pronounciation as I don't have that gaijin accent that everyone can tell you're a noob at Japanese. Simple, plain Japanese was all I attempted, and it was enough to carry simple conversation. I later asked if I had an accent, and my slightly older cousin Yoshiyuki told me, "Jouto", which means "a little". Believe me, when forced, you try your best to speak properly to convey your meaning.

it's a bad idea to comment on translations(animu). srsly since backlash from fansubbers can be awesome. *unless you are really confident in the first place.

I heard "mon", not "mou", and in that instance, "mon" makes a lot more sense. Feel free to challenge me on that. Fansubbers should know what they translated wrong so that improve their Japanese, right? Apparently it doesn't seem to be the case, nor do I care since all I'm doing is watching.

im really saying that it's gonna be painful when you are bring up "Mon, agete!" when it is "Mon wo akete". even if they were to be guilty of errors, you are getting yourself shot down as well.

and they are trained shooters.

I didn't hear the "wo" because it was slurred with "mon". At least TMD subs got it right in comparison to gg, not that gg subs are bad but just pointing out a mistake.

And again, who might you be, a fansubber?

edit: either way, thanks for the warning, but I really don't care. Flame me all they want, I'm just one fan out the million, but wrong is wrong. I seriously did not hear "wo", and most likely gg subs did not either, even though "mon wo akete" is the grammatically correct sentence.

The thing with languages is a lot like one's athletic ability you don't use it, you lose it. I haven't studied Japanese for like a month due to getting ready for University but I have classes coming up this Saturday so I'm hyped for that even though I forgot a lot of the basics..conjugating, some uses of some of the particles...stuff like that. I'm a total newb.

I wanted to move there really, especially lately as my mother is moving to australia (from UK) and i think this country is becoming ridiculous.
I started learning last year sometime, but never really started properly until the start of summer this year.
I started learning hiragana and katakana when i went to america on holiday about half a year ago. I traveled on the plane along way and had alot of car journeys, so this awesome app on my ipod taught me them so i am not flawed with that. I've been doing kanji as of recent and am almost finished on JLPT level 1 and i know random others on higher levels.
I'm learning fluently and professionally because i like doing things the right way.
I'm not bothered about watching anime in raw, but i would like to read japanese manga since i am fed up of waiting a long time for it to be translated officially (i don't read manga online as a prefer a collection). And since i am hoping to move there (not just for anime obviously), it would be great to walk home from work and pick up a manga everyday!

I've started like last year or so , but have gotten slow on my studying since I have been busy but I plan to go at it hard core again soon. Reason being? Simply I find it an interesting language I guess it would be neat to watch anime , manga and such and not need subs but I've long wanted to learn the language before I even got into anime.
