Haiti
Do You Care?

Why does it seem to me like if being a cold hearted asshole is something of a fad?I think it is. Maybe people just don't want to seem like sissies or something, I don't know.
I'd say I have a fair understanding for the general necessity for human compassion, but I care no more about Haiti now than I did before the earthquake, which is to say, very little. Atlthough it's good that so many people DO care now; maybe Haiti can be rebuilt into a more stable country. But it's a place with a long history of being fucked. If I was going to be concerned about it, I already would have been.
The truth is, Haiti is one of the few places on Earth where something so horrible could have such little effect. I'm sure the loss of human life is generally concerning to most people, and it probably should be, because it has to do with the survival of the species, but the overall consequences of these deaths are very little. Haiti has been such a fucked place for so long, they don't really contribute much to the world. It used to be a great place for sugar cane, but in recent years, all they really export are coffee and twine. And not much of it. Over the past decade Haiti's imports have skyrocketed without any significant change of export. They have accumulated large trade and payment defect without any real way to pay it off, and to say that they government governs anything would be laughable. Honestly, the only other country likely hurt by this is the Dominican Republic, and really, only very slightly.
There is no damage done to the world at large, and we can easily spare such a small percentage of the population, especially considering that the vast majority of the lives lost were uneducated and unskilled with no means of contributing anything. This probably isn't their fault, but it's a fact.
So I don't care about Haiti that much. And I think it's strange that so many people who didn't give a fuck about these people starving to death without any hope in a country they've never heard of and can't find on a map now care so very much about those same people being crushed to death.

I don't really see it as either of those things. If I went into a randomly selected high school classroom in the US last month and asked a series of questions about Haiti, I'd have been lucky to find a single person in that class who knew where it is, or even that it is in the same hemisphere as the US. Even in a university classroom I suspect it would be a very small number of people. And even people who knew something about it would most likely be like me, and not really care that much about it. You can't possibly care for every individual who is suffering in the world, outside of a general and vague concern for them as a group.
I'm not saying it's a terrible thing that people didn't care about Haiti that much before, I'm just saying it's strange to me that they suddenly care so much now.
Seems like they only really do because it's what is now considered appropriate.

No, but if they cared, they would know where it is.

You know, I originally cared, but the more I hear about it on the news, the less I'm starting to care. There's reports of people robbing and looting the food trucks. WTF? You're honestly going to shoot at the people who are trying to help you? And where they hell are they getting these guns anyway?

It's not like Haiti was low on criminal activity even before the earthquake, and there are always looters that won't let a chance like this go, no matter where in the world you are. Besides, even "normal" people will do whatever it take to get food if they're starving, chaos and panic usually does not go well with patience.

I care. Not as much as some, perhaps, but neither I am a heartless bastard like most people in this thread that can freely say they dont give a fuck.
That being said, I have no money to donate, so in the end is the same.

When people are desperate for basic supplies, chaos tends to ensue. Sure, its not the most logical thing to do, but when your desperate for basics like food and medicine logic tends to go out the window

I could really care less what happens over there. But I just think that the US is trying to solve its own economic crisis, so why are we helping the poorest country on the planet.

Fakku is full of selfish, heartless bastards.
Didn't see that one coming.
Because we're humans.

I think if I was in the same situation Id do the same or even worse to get all the food Id need, and for the people Im with too if theres not enough to go around. Thinking about it, if you were in the capital and this did happen, wont it be a good idea too to break into a jewelry store for example and get what you can while there's enough chaos to keep people busy, I guess thats off topic

You don't need to know where it is to care.Humans are emotionally fragile creatures, just knowing someone cares about our existance makes us happy , If we know someone loves us it gives us strenght. So just caring for a stranger in deep shit can somehow give them a silver lining.

I love how must Americans are showing apathy towards this but when Katrina and 9/11 happened, they wanted the rest of the world to show sympathy and care towards them.
Man, I can imagine the reactions of people if the rest of the world told the US to fuck off when those disasters happened.

I just got this from southpark but arent americans more on looking for who to blame and burning that person than asking for sympathy when these things happen here?

You don't actually realize do you the fact that 1 it was the Americans to respond first, mainly the Coast Guard but the media doesn't talk about that they only care about the Army and Air Force. Also America is deploying 6,000 more soldiers to help as well as citizens of America sending more the $8 million dollars in texts. Also you may wanna look to see how much our business are sending Business Donations
Also for the Governments look who is at the top of the list. [List of Countries Donating/Donated to Haiti
