One Earth, One Government

Kinda hard to speculate about that far in the future. As of now I think that a singular world government would be impossible, there is just far too much in this world for a single government to regulate it all. Not to mention the fact that if you try to instill one form of government on people they tend to get upset ;) people like diff. things-go figure.
I guess it would boil down to what your idea of a 'singular' government really is. I mean if you get down to it even the countries of today aren't really one government as much as they are a coalition of smaller and smaller governments each answering to the broader yet more powerful governments above them xD. So if you want to look at this one world government as something along those lines than I think it's very probable to see this. Really the basis of this idea are already in practice with the UN today. In a few million years it isn't a large stretch to say that all nations would be part of this and that a good deal of the power of each nation would shift to the UN.

the way i see it,
since everyone has different views on things and such.
the only way we could have one government is if we had a immortal dictator or something.
I mean people naturally like to fight and everyone is strong in their beliefs and would sometimes fight to the death for these beliefs.... oh and als i doubt that the human race will survive for a million years without destroying themselves

One world government is impossible with a free society. Far too many ideas and people trying to go in opposing directions. Any society that emphasizes individuals equal to or greater than the collective can never make a one world government. At least, not a practical one. We'd just end up with another impotent U.N. or league of nations.
Now, I can see a one world government from a society that emphasizes collectivism. The socialist and capitalist movements are leading to a more interconnected world. Will that government be a tyranny or some form of despotism. Forgive my cynicism, but when I think one world government the word Orwellian comes to mind.

One World Government? Surely you haven't read 1984 or Brave New World or even heard of the NWO?
Opinions divide people, and is where different countries come in!

Out side of some form of conquering totalitarian war machine, i don't think it's possible. if that should happen, i think most people would accept it. most people are herd animals who would rather do what they are told than think for them selves.

As long as humans are still humane, it will never happen.
I'd dare say that is the most efficient solution, but humans are humans. We all have different egos and stuff. Just look at all those "Rebels" in countries trying to break free. Or look at Israel and Palestine. Humans are to egoistic. It'll never happen. Ask again a few thousand years from now, it might be different.

I find the idea that we cannot have a one world government because everyone has different opinions absolutely ridiculous. What country has all like minded people? Is it not the differences in opinions that make democratic societies successful - the MOST successful?
And before you say the population size of the earth is to large know this. India alone has more people in its own country than the entire world had in the time of Rome. Are they not democratic and one of the fastest growing economies? Do they not have different views on politics and a diverse religious population? The country is still under one government that has provided more good for its people then would have existed without it.
As oxymoronic as it is, humans will ban together because we are so alike - we become strong when we ban together because we are so different.

Humans are such selfish creatures that it could never happen.

Bingo! I personally think mankind will wipe itself out before this would come to pass actually. Perhaps a good thing if man continues to behave as he does now. Collectivism always will be the immovable object to individualism's unstoppable force. Rep+

Mankind would destroy itself using nuclear deterrence
Nuclear deterrence works like this :
Country A launches nuclear attack on Country B, Country B retaliates with another Nuclear attack. They both bombard each other till both countries are dead. GAME OVER
One government will destroy itself, divided it cannot stand. It will be brought down with anarchy and the destruction of human civilization. War, war never changes.
People say that man was not made for war, we were born for it. Since the first days of man we have been using the power of sticks and stones, wood and iron, bullets and gunpowder. It only takes one spark to set the world on fire, I just hope I'll be dead before that happens.

I seriously doubt that humans will be confined to the earth in four billion years.
The (modern) human race is only around 200000 years old, thus, the chances of a major evolutionary change not occurring sometime within millions of years are slim.
On top of this, there is the possibility of a doomsday event occurring. For example, there is an asteroid, several times larger than the one which caused the second largest extinction ever, (the end of the dinosaurs) which will pass within the Earth's atmosphere twice within the ext millennium, the first pass being relatively soon. Whilst there is a chance that humans will cause such an event (nuclear apocalypse) I find it highly improbable as everyone is too scared of everyone else's weapons to launch their own.
Provided, then, that humanity doesn't evolve into something else, doesn't become extinct and hasn't colonised large swathes on the milky way (or possibly beyond) within the next four million years, there could possibly be a unified world government (though likely a dictatorship). After all, the chances of a world government are IMO far higher than those of surviving 4 million years on Earth alone.

Unified Earth government won't happen so long as human nature and people with crazy beliefs exists.
There's probably a slight chance of the world being unified against some cause (alien invasion) but it probably won't happen in our lifetime. Not to mention there will always be those that will take advantage of the situation for their own gain.

Considering as to how much some people love nationalism, I don't see "One World Government" happening anytime soon, unless Earth gets owned by that kind of catastrophe which will leave governments non-existent. I do see a loose coalition of some sorts, or number of continental power blocks.
I'm pretty sure that if space colonization comes around, the situation will change. While I don't see Earth uniting in such case either, most colonies would or could be autonomous, unified structures, unlike present Earth. Considering the distance from Earth and/or potential hardships of colonization, I doubt that people on say Mars would be as absorbed into making internal divisions when you gotta try your best at surviving.

Although i detest nationalism I really couldn't handle a single government for the the whole world. It just doesnt seem likely for humans to hold hands with each other and forget our differences. Although a unified human race would be effing amazing because we could actually accomplish things.

Hypothetically it could work. If every person on Earth was brainwashed by propaganda into believing the same morals and values under a Fascist rule. (aka Nazi Germany - except on a global scale)

I don't see why not. Societies have more similarities with each other than differences. As long as it is beneficial for both sides, there is nothing going to get in the way.
If you get the idea of a one world government ruling every aspect of your life out of your head, it doesn't seem like that big a deal. As far as your life right now is concerned, the government already has a hand on your "world" as far as you are concerned. Unless you have dealings in multiple nations, the nation you live in now is already dominated by some government entity.
And FPoD you say impotent? If a government is not moving towards new laws all the time, does that mean it is impotent. Thank god the U.N. isn't passing new resolutions everyday.
The truth is the majority of the world's people wont care. Just like they don't really care about politics now. They just want to live their lives, get married, have kids, and be happy. Whether the government is national or global, they still want it to stay out of their lives and only provide help in large matters like health, protection, and infrastructure.
