Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

I'm thinking of starting this series. Do I need to play the first one to understand the others? If not which one should I begin with?

But it looks so old and 8-bitty compared to the newer ones. They look much better.
Thanks. I'll download an emulator and play it as soon as I can. never

LOL, Yuri meant the first Final Fantasy XIII game, not Final Fantasy I.
Each Final Fantasy is independent and can be played in whichever order you please.
Only X and XIII have direct sequels (X-2, XIII-2) that requires you to play the first game to understand the story.
If you really want to go back to the first games, just play the remastered versions (DS, 3DS, PSP, TABLET)

Yeah, I meant start from the first Final Fantasy game in the XIII series. I thought you meant you were thinking of starting the XIII series, not the whole game series as a whole. Like Hentanize said, each title in the series has its own story, you can start from whichever game you want, I just meant that if you want to start playing XIII then since Lightning Returns will be the second sequel to FF XIII then start from FF XIII. Then you can go onto XIII-2 and then Lightning Returns.

I'm puzzled. Are you referring "Lightning Returns" as the second game of FF13, like a extension? Or do you mean FF13 has a series on it's own (which makes little sense)?
Edit* I thought FF13 was the thirteenth game in the FF series. And they were all connected. That's why I naturally thought you were talking about FF1.

Yea it's stupid I know. Lightning Returns is the third installment of the "XIII series". There's a XIII-2 before that.
Final Fantasy is a huge franchise so there are spin offs everywhere. Just consider Final Fantasy with roman numbers to be the main games. XIII is the 13th Final Fantasy, but in reality it really isn't.

The games are independent of each other. Each title in the series doesn't run into one continuous story. Like Final Fantasy XII has its own story and characters. It has nothing to do with XIII. It's the same for all the numbers in the series. Its just XIII has a sequel, XIII-2, which continues the story of XIII, and Lightning Returns is another sequel (basically XIII-3)

XIII-2 and Lightning Returns are the Reloaded and Revolutions of Matrix. Story wise, they were better off not making sequels. Like Matrix, XIII had a conclusive story (X too for that matter).

Why not name it something else than numbers. Like the Call of Duty series are doing.
Thanks again. I hope FF isn't console exclusive. Not looking forward to buy a game I might not end up liking.

Numbers are the best way to identify sequels.
Amen to the AVGN.

Starting from XIII it's multi platform.
Also, note that XI and XIV are MMORPGs, so you can pass on those two if you plan to solo the entire franchise.

Ah thanks. I'll probably skip all the games and go to XIII immediately and if I like what I play, I'll consider playing the sequels and prequels.
Sorry for going off topic.

Please no, start from 10, use it as a reference then. The mighty Final Fantasy was at its best when it was still under SquareSoft (before it merged with Enix).
6(2D),7,8,9,10 arguably had the best scenarios. You can start from any of them but 10 is a good choice as it's the most recent. Optimally, wait for the HD remake of X and X-2 and then you can start playing lol.

While I absolutely love XIII it shouldn't be taken as a reference for the others.

^ Heh that was pretty cool. I wonder if they'll make other ones too.. like the other protagonists costume. I doubt it though D:
Or make it so the final boss (assuming it's a human-like form or something) to be dressed as Sephiroth when you wear Cloud's costume in battle. That'll be sweet.

I have been lazy in completely 13-2. I think Im like halfway through it. And I see a lot of people hating on Lightning Returns and the FF13 saga in general. Why has it earned such negativity?

Why has it earned such negativity?Because when Final Fantasy XIII came out everybody criticized the game for being linear and the battle system.
