IF routes are entered in game (normal game, not FFA), the wiki describes how to enter an IF route. Overall, every IF route is unlocked once you've beaten the game once.

This stuff is addicting.
Too addicting that I want to get it perfect.
So addicting that I've failed four times and I've just failed again recently.

i know what you mean - ive spent many a hour just replaying the same 4 turns into order to get the best outcome. You tell yourself "ok, i just need to capture that female commander and then ill stop, Im only gonna play for an hour before going to bed" and then later you look at the clock and its 4:30 in the mourning...

The game system is very random depending on your course of actions. Like let's say if you umm you recruited a certain commander (e.g. ) early on than a guide tells you it will basically mess up what the game will generate through the next course of turns that come up. I noticed even one stupid action you think is insignificant can alter how the game will be played.

If I recall, you can go to the sex change altar and change Rance into a girl. She's actually quite cute, but she loses all of her confidence or something and causes a game over.
