The nunsploitation genre had its heyday in Europe during
the 1970s---especially in films made in Catholic countries
like Spain and Italy. As you note, its popularity in Japan is
interesting because Japan isn't even a Christian country.
Most likely it's because the Japanese love to fetishize
women in uniform, be they nuns, nurses, or Nazis.

In the christian faith nuns are not required to be virgins so I can understand how this is based off that premise.
