Signalize!)
“We’re getting quite close to the 1000th candidate, aren’t we?” The announcer questioned. It’s been a long time since the audition had begun this morning. In fact, it was past 2 pm, and it was still proceeding with the candidates. None seemed to want to leave, however. The performances that took place over and over kept the audience excited. There were, however, small intervals of break, especially one for lunch.
“Now then, let us move on, shall we? Entry number #987! Please take the stage!”
The slender silhouette of a girl moved onto the stage. Her long beautiful – silver hair was exceptionally shiny, and beautiful. It was natural, and it perfectly complemented her overall looks. She seemed to be born with a rather small head, the tint of pink that painted her sweet cheeks seemed to be the most irresistible feature that she possessed, other than the cute and apparently adorable – porcelain face with translucent skin that she had. She carried such enticing – green emerald-like puppy eyes that could gain the sympathy of even the most coldest people of the world. Her tender white-skinned legs were slim, so much so that they seemed incredibly frail. One could only confirm after her performance, however.
The announcer – clearly entranced by such a person – did not speak till he noticed that the spectators were just as much as awe-induced as he seemed to be. Shaking his face to regain composure. He firmly gripped his mic.
“P-Please give us your name!”

“Rice” she uttered in response, tersely.
“...Huh?”

Woah, it really is Ichigo-chan! Rice internally squealed. Obviously, it was her first time seeing the top idol in flesh. What a dream come true! Such an amazing person would be judging her today! Rice actually didn’t have the slightest clue that Hoshimiya Ichigo would be today’s judge; until she overheard others talking about it. At first, she was skeptical, but she soon noticed on the various holographic displays in the waiting room; that it was actually the truth.
There’s Rise too – she’s also very magnificent! As a person who could only pass time via television; she was a big fan of particularly these too – along with Louise – as they appeared in various shows and television programs the most.
Ichigo and Rise quickly eyed towards the stacks of papers before them, then the duo picked up the first piece of paper from the top. It contained her profile. The image was indeed mesmerizing. How could they have missed it? Such a silver, or rather – white? ...Beauty was missed? Not that beauty alone could top pure skills and abilities; they’d still need to gloss over it soon.
“Um, is it true that your name is Rai-su?” In this case, Ichigo did said †˜rice’ but due to her Japanese accent, and lack of fluency in terms of English – despite having went to America in the past – she pronounced it as any Japanese would. She could pronounce this a bit more properly, but she felt that pronouncing like a Japanese in Japan would be befitting. As one would say –
†˜when in Rome, do as the romans do’.
However…
“It’s not Rai-su!” The pretty girl disagreed against the reigning top idol – Hoshimiya Ichigo – fearlessly.

Ugh… what have I done! Rice cursed herself; cringing internally. Rice’s emotions were rather hard to control. She’d say something she wouldn’t mean to say in an aggressive tone, or a bad way. It just so happens that she blurts her words out uncontrollably due to her lack of self-restraint, especially when it comes to this nickname that she seems to cherish already – even before her career itself has begun.
“Eh?” both Ichigo and Rise uttered without a thought; taken aback.
“I-I mean… it’s pronounced as
Ri-ce! – I’d prefer it if people said it right! Hmph!” Rice scowled and turned away, apparently angry.

“She’s… intense,” Rise uttered, with a wry smile and sweat that passed down her face.
Ichigo was amused. “Aww, Rice-chan, don’t look away~!” She clearly took it in a more positive manner.

“Eh?” Rise looked towards Ichigo who seemed to be having fun.
“Forgive us, please~!” Ichigo said, trying to apparently appease her fervent outrage of emotions.
“J-Just this once!” Rice exclaimed, turning back to the two once again.
“Mn!” Ichigo nodded. “Good, good!”

“I don’t really get what’s going on… is she even really angry?” Rise silently whispered to herself in confusion. Regardless, she accepted it as a miraculous phenomena. Only an airhead could truly fathom the strange exchange of words that took place moments ago.
The announcer – who had been sweating profusely due to strange conversation – finally decided to intervene. “Well… Rice-san, why not tell us about yourself?”
“Um, let’s see...” Rice trailed off. “I reaaaaally like rice,” this time, she said it in Japanese. This was obvious from her nickname, however “I’ve been confined mostly in the hospital, all my life, so far,” Rice begun with a hint of sadness in her expression. “I wanted to get to know people, but for some reason – the nurses would avoid me.”
Ichigo’s smiling face waned. “Why is that?”
Rice shook her face. “I do not know. I’ve lost my parents long ago; I can hardly remember my time with them, anymore. My relatives paid for my stay in the hospital,” she continued.

“If I may ask… what kind of a problem did you have in your body? Weak body from birth?” Rise also felt somewhat grievous, but as a judge, she had the right to know of her physical state as idols need to be perfect shape for their career.
“Come to think of it; they wouldn’t tell me about it, either,” Rice said, honestly. “Regardless, I’m not saying all this for pity; I am only trying to †˜tell about myself’. However, in regards to the previous question just now; was told that my body should be in perfect shape now.”
“Good for you!” Ichigo happily replied.
Rice smiled, and nodded. “All my life; I only had the television to spend time with. I’ve seen many idols, many educational programs, variety shows, and more. From there, I’ve became a big fan of you two, as well as Louise-chan… err, san!” Rice earnestly said, the choice of honorifics was always a gruelling factor to her. Louise was such a dignified and respectable person, that she couldn’t possibly say †˜chan’ directly in public. However, since she blurted out, she immediately ended up fixing up her own mistake herself… in a rather comical manner.
Ichigo giggled. Rise smiled, but didn’t comment just yet.
“I’m sorry for the rude behavior earlier… I seem to always lose myself to my emotions, somehow,” Rice looked down with a feeling of shame as she scratched the back of her head meekly. She was never frowning at others, but herself, so far.
“It’s okay,” Ichigo smiled. It was a warm and enchanting smile, that made Rice’s face as red as a tomato. The top idol was truly an amazing person – Rice concluded, despite knowing it all along.

“So, you’ve been in hospital most of your life, yes?” Rise begun with the questions yet again.
Rice nodded. “Yes, I was hardly allowed to move around… ” Rice would mention how slothful she became due to watching television on bed all along, but that’s one thing she’d strive to take down after becoming an idol; so she didn’t feel the need to mention it… yet.

“I see, how much time did you have to train yourself, then?” There was always the possibility in such a case that she’d not have enough skills to qualify as an idol. Weak body aside, an idol needs to go beyond an ordinary body, too. Keeping oneself fit, and over that, training to gain a great amount of stamina – all of it while keeping perfect check of the proportions of the body’s looks and curves. It was never a task fulfilled with ease, ever.
“I was discharged about an year ago, from then, I begun to practice on my own,” Rice claimed earnestly, and proudly. She did all that she could; the rest was to believe in herself.
“On your own?” Ichigo tilted her head. Before she herself started; Kiriya Aoi helped with the dancing practices and the other particulars that an idol needed to excel in. So she could hardly imagine someone working on their own for a start.
“Yes, I’ve not depended on an instructor, or anyone else for it. I’ve done what I could, for my dream!” Rice said with iron-clad determination.

“Hm, I’m not sure how you trained yourself, though? Have you used the internet, or something?”
“Actually, I’ve used the television, mostly. My memories from watching performances, anyway.” Rice claimed with any hesitation, as if she did the most natural thing anyone would do.
To this, both Ichigo and Rise were taken aback by surprise, once again. “R-Really? You can remember everything you watch from the television?!”

“You’re starting from there?!” Rise said to Ichigo in disbelief, but then faced Rice.
“So you only used as reference what you learned from the television?” Rise said, wide-eyed. In this age and time, it was hardly possible to be a great singer or dancer without additional services from teachers and instructors. Some would -at least- get a recording to watch and practice from.
“I’ve been watching you two, and Louise-san on television for so long, I’ve learned many different choreographs. I also watched many exercise programs, as well as how-to-dance shows,” Rice said, confidently as she clutched the air over her chest slowly and steadily while she spoke. “I can hardly forget what I see, so I used the knowledge I gained over the years – to chase after my dreams,” she claimed openly; pridefully. “I will admit, though. I did used the internet, but not as frequently as one may do.”

“I see,” Rise acknowledged. How unbelievable. There wasn’t a hint in her expression that could point Rise to a lie, either. She’d be a great actress if this was a lie that Rice made up.
“Then, the reason you picked Starlight Academy over Dream Academy is because… ”
“Because of you three – including Louise-san – yes,” Rice gave a firm nod.
“I see!”

“What kind of an idol do you wish to be – assuming you pass this audition?”
“Hmm, I was inspired by you two, and Louise-san. All three of you have shown me how to dream. The magic of dreams and imaginations that you all cast upon me were so great, that I simply can’t help but want to become an idol myself,” Rice explained faithfully. “If I become an idol, I’d very much like to make a dream-like performance for my fans; a moment of pure bliss – it is what I wish to deliver throughout the world. I want to be an idol who shines, is all,” Rice ended her speech, with her eyes closed; smiling warmly at herself.
“I hope your dream comes true, one day,” Ichigo said, she didn’t show how surprised she was – at how she was able to cast a magic of dreams at Rice. Rather, she never quite thought how she could do such things, at all.

“Me too. I hope you manage to succeed,” Rise smiled, she truly wanted to encourage herself with more words, but couldn’t find anything more to say – as she was a judge. A dilemma indeed.
“Now, Rice-san, please show us your performance!” The announcer said, smiling at her. After taking a look over the crowd; he was sure that she successfully managed to make everyone smile at her.
Rice smiled. It was finally her time to shine – she thought. “I -will- enchant everyone with my performance – just you watch, Ichigo-chan, Rise-chan… everyone!” And †˜Louise-san’ she wanted to say. Too bad Louise was not present here. However, she couldn’t be overcome with greed, either. She felt as though she used up all the luck of her life to just meet Ichigo and Rise.
***
Walking past the hallways, Rice found herself before a tall brown door. Pulling it apart; she proceeded inside. It was seemingly empty as she walked in with slow yet steady steps. The floor shone against the light from the ceiling, as if polished. She noticed a small table straight before her. Not knowing the difference in quality – she assumed that it was a cheaply-bought table; †˜cheap’ in actuality never sat right with Starlight Academy, however.
Rice believed that she’d need to pick the cards from the table. Just as she stood before it, peering down to the cards that sparkled – her eyes sparkled in kind from admiration, too. At such a moment, a voice spoke out to her.
“Raisu-san, please pick three Aikatsu Cards to self-coordinate your outfit, then proceed to the stage.”
“It’s
Ri-ce!” She immediately corrected him without hesitation. Soon realizing that she shouldn’t have done that. However, the voice didn’t speak back.
Rice nodded to herself – once again looking back into the selection of cards provided for her. She now realized that she was in need of a †˜set’ of cards that would complete her dress for the performance. She read up the information from a booklet of Starlight Academy. As she was inept in reading, still; it was somewhat hard to make things out. With her natural intellect, she made assumptions here and there in order to absorb the information like a sponge.
Her hands trailed the rows of cards, searching for something that would fit her. However, every time she was about to pick a set of cards – that were randomly scattered on the table – something always felt wrong; out of place. The Basil Stage Coord, the Blue Stage Coord, the Green Stage Coord, the Sky-Blue Stage Coord – something didn’t seem to sit right with her. Rice pondered carefully.

Isn’t there something that actually -fits- me? This is quite troublesome, disdainfully, Rice thought… until her pupils laid its sight upon a particular card. A vest. A fine white damned vest! A saving grace. A saving grace indeed! Such whiteness, such pristine cleanliness! It felt just right. A fitting color for †˜rice’. Well, not entirely white, it contained black compartments in it, too. Which in turn, gave a very befitting sense of coolness that exuded from it, too. She purely felt that she was in luck, today. Gingerly picking up the cards; she noted that there was only two cards for this particular coordination – a card containing the white vest top and the pleated gray skirt, the other card contained a pair of long boots. She almost mistook them for a pair of shoes with stockings, initially. However, these were only two cards – she was in need of another. At such a moment… she noticed an accessory card on the far corner of a table. Perhaps it could work for a third card! Perhaps this was an advantage for picking a coordination containing only two cards. The third card Rice picked was the Black Chiffon Headband – an accessory card.
Looking forward ahead – Rice found a set of doors lying in wait for her. Running past it, she found herself in a rather starry room; walls decorated with yellow-glowing stars made out of a set of mini-bulbs. The room was otherwise dimly lit. A golden device lied before her. Rice recognized it from various images over the media. She had been seeing this for years on television. To see it before her eyes at last; she was tempted to just sit before it, and caress its magnificent-looking cold surface before it’d be dyed in her warmth. Yes, she felt that way before shrugging herself off of mere distractions. How unsightly for an idol-to-be! She’d be seeing this everyday after passing, after all!
That’s right; I’ll ace this, just watch me, Ichigo-chan, Rise-chan, Louise-san, and everyone! Such confidence dwelled in her heart; there was no way she could lose.
Upon approaching the booth of her dreams, Rice ended up touching its shining frames for a moment, regardless. A small part of herself from the back of her mind reminded that if she did lose indeed – she may not come across it again in her entire life. A grievous feeling welled up. It was, however, shoved aside as she frowned at herself for being so sentimental. Looking down to a four-sided star-like crest on the booth’s entry; there lied a tablet at which four slots at the exact shapes and size of the cards could be found. Three slots for the dress cards, and one other slot below that was short in length and wide in breadth was seen. There was another slot in the opposite – at the top – that was of the same shape and size as the dress cards; this was meant for students’ ID cards. As Rice was not yet an idol school’s student; she had no need for inserting a card there. Rice looked intently and earnestly – preparing her soul for the ordeal of the day.
Pressing the first card into the left-most slot in the middle section, then the other card into the right-most slot, and the accessory card on the lower slot below; a strange sound occurred hinting that the cards were clicked in. With the preparations complete; the crest shined brightly, from which Rice couldn’t tear her eyes away. The gold locks cracked open with a loud clink as they fell towards the dark red carpet, the gold crest rose upwards as light shone from the top gemlike stone that lied over the dress fitting device. Finally, the curtains pulled themselves to the ends of both sides to reveal a blindingly bright entrance – possibly to the world of idols.

Dear mother and father… I’ll try my best, so please – watch me! With such a thought – Rice ran in; filled with determination in her heart and soul.
As the light seemed to have vanished – Rice hesitantly opened her eyes; finding herself in a seemingly new world. She curiously looking from left to right.

So very blue! She honestly thought to herself after looking over her surroundings, and herself – her entire form seemed to have been painted blue itself, too, somehow. She almost didn’t believe that such an occurrence would happen when she read about it in a magazine – alas, reality spoke otherwise. Regardless, this was very pretty, with sparkles and shining glitters filling the space – diamond suits hung adrift on air – how very beautiful and mysterious!
Rice then looked towards what lied before her – an azure runway. It was as if a path carved out in the physical world that would lead her to her dreams. She found the cards she placed over the previously seen device straight ahead; lined up for her. Except that they were larger than her body itself now. Running ahead excitedly; she crossed over the two cards – with a burst of bright light and a flashy sound – the attire depicted in the cards were fitted perfectly onto her slim and slender body. A sparkle of light shot up – while circling her three-sixty-degrees – climbing past Rice speedily like a shooting star, it resembled a miniature firework as it showered her with bright shower of glittering light as she pulled her now-clad-hand up to just below her chin with a look of bold and confident smile. Her other hand – now equipped with the long black glove, too – supported the elbow of the hand led up to her head, her legs on the other hand crossed each other to complete the pose – blue stars flashed; appearing around her – as if to hint that she was ready to take on the stage – before she hopped onto the portal of light that lead her straight to the stage.
***
With an ephemeral light enveloping the scene – the shape of the stage took change. From a portal, Rice walked out with graceful slow steps before striking a pose; putting her right hand over her hip, while leaving the other at bay in the air with a smile. From what she could see, the stage was indeed circular – designed like a pie-chart – having three triangular sections. One green, one pink, and the other, blue – with neon lights under the respective colored-floors beaming out gently from below her. A pillar of light stood behind her; welling up – encircled with countless number of rings rising up to the blackness that lied above – seemingly a futuristic portal of some kind. Oh the wonder of the Aikatsu System!
The entirety of the walls were now cloaked with blackness, but was abound with gleaming stars and blue hues of galaxies. As she stood and watched over the audience – seemingly cheery to a moderate level – she was encouraged to heat things up on her own. Well, not quite herself; she’d need the music to lend a helping hand. The setting of the stage – known as the Star Ship stage – made her feel like she was a being very special. That’s right, she felt somewhat like an overseer of the universe – a strange yet profound feeling, she thought – a person meant to shine brightly on stage. On the other hand, her dress was the perfect aid to making her feel this way. The vest was designed with a black bow tie, from which three black buttons lied over the necked section. It had a black neck and pockets. The lower part consisted of a pleated gray skirt, and a long black boots. Her hands were clad in a pair of black gloves.
The music begun to play. The loud beats pounded deeply into her heart – more so than it did for anyone else in the hall – or so Rice felt. An experience never-before-felt for someone who had only been to a concert once. With a pulse as if to respond to the starting beats, she pulled up her hand with the motion of the melodious sound. The dance begun with Rice holding out her right hand stiff while rocking the other; before both her arms were used to swing themselves to make intricate moves including waving them up, down, shaking, and then entering the phase of dancing itself – where she found herself shaking her hips to flow with the harmony that the air overflew with.
“Hi, Signalize! Kotae ha motto takai sora no kanata. Iie, chigau yo. Boku no me ni mo mieta chi no hate!”
Rice sung with all she had. She struggled to keep her voice to maintain a smooth and flowing level of tone that produced a steady and proper music to the ears of her spectators. Singing was never an easy feat for Rice; the pitch maintenance, and keeping a stable rhythm were tough challenges for Rice to deal with. She only had an year to train her throat, after all. Others wouldn’t quite pay her the time of the day back in the hospital. Rice did seldom sing in her hospital room. It was infrequent because the nurses scolded her – saying that she’d disturb the other patients. Rice would silently murmur; calling them stingy – she was aware that there were hardly any patients in the rooms around her.
“Do that signalize!” At about this part, the routine changed to a more delicate form where Rice had to dance her entire body to the rhythm as she had her palms clap against each other multiple times.
“Hageshiku natta mune no atsui power~!” Here, she gently pulled apart both her arms – as she pranced. While one was pulled up, the other was pushed below; the process repeated back and forth – turning her body to the other side while looking back to face the crowd; then soon turning her entire figure towards the audience yet again – while her legs continued to dance seemingly with the music.
“Sou da minagiru nanika ga, dakara ima wo shinjite~!”
Joining both her hands, Rice’s hands were swung in various directions – from down to up – up and down – as she performed. “Zankoku na yume ga yume de yume ni narunda. Hora chÅsen matteru yo~!” Everything was going well so far, Rice’s mind assessed simultaneously as she danced.
Oh how fun it is to be on stage like this! The melody, the lyrics, the dance, the stage, the crowd!! Her eyes sparkled with the intensity and ecstacy she felt from performing on stage – a never-before-felt emotion for her indeed. Truly, it was a dream come true for a recluse such as her who lived a confined lifestyle for the entirety of her time of life. The joyous feeling welled up inside her ever so much.
Abruptly, the air was afloat with white-ish blue musical notes. A ring somewhat resembling a chandelier formed – with… spider webs- no, snowflakes decorating its various spaces in between the circular icy rings surrounding her. Rice didn’t quite notice the glow or the crystallized notes dancing about close to her. There were also small bubbles and watery particles that hung about around her. The ring made her feel confounded, too.
Strange, she thought. What were those exactly? Special effects on stage? How unexpected. Rice ended up deciding to not think much about it and continue enjoy performing on stage.

“That aura!” Rise remarked with surprise from behind the table. How surprising indeed; an entrant making an aura on possibly her first time performing. Only Hoshimiya Ichigo was known to pull off such a feat.
“Ehh? I thought it’d have rice balls, or at least a rice bowl!” Ichigo said with apparent displeasure in tone.

“You’re starting from there?!” Rise snapped at Ichigo’s lack of surprise, or what it seemed to be.
“But… things seemed to have gotten more interesting!” Ichigo said. Rise could definitely agree to this.
“Mukau basho wa mirai no. Bokura no kibou no naka ni!”
Rice’s previous dance steps resumed at this part. Rinse and repeat – a wise person would say – a generally acceptable and common aspect of dance routines in many songs. The most dynamic and eye-catching; exciting steps usually would gain a segment where they’re repeated. Rice was sweating profusely at this point. However, she cared not, not anymore, anyway. This was worth sweating for! Every one of these gleaming beads that toppled down to the cold floor to bathe under the lights of the stage were proof of her hard work and labor – as if marking her existence onto the very stage. Meanwhile, the special effects did not disappear… she wondered why. On the flip side of the coin – unbeknownst to her worries; the spectators were riled up by her aura.
“Nozomu basho ha mirai no, kagayaki ga aizu lets go, go!”
Facing the crowd, Rice sat with a turn as gave a bright smile with an index finger of her hand pointing towards her very face after curving her arm – finishing with a position that made her sit to the colored transparent floor as the music finally ended.
As the performance ended, Rice realized only then – that the spectators were truly cheering for her, and her alone. She looked onwards – past the cheerfully clapping judges gingerly – other than the many Starlight Academy students, there were white, strange figures. They were the representation of the viewers streaming via the internet to watch the performance. Despite panting, Rice’s smile grew wider as she took notice of how happy everyone seemed to be with her performance. She energetically waved her hand to them before taking leave of the stage of her dreams. Of course, she didn’t notice how the excitement bar above her was almost full. What she did note was that the apparent †˜special effects’ disappeared at last.
***
“Alright, it is time to announce the results of this – fateful last day of the audition caravan!” The announcer was especially excited today, it seemed. He gripped his mic tighter than usual, causing the speakers to give away a strange echo. “The winners are…”
“Entry number #765 and #987! Congratulations, you two have earned the rights to enter the Starlight Academy!”
“Mizusaki-san, congratulations, you’ve passed! Your feelings from your performance has shown through,” Ichigo said, clapping along with the audience.

“You too… Rai-su-, err, I mean, Rice-san, your performance was exceptionally well. Congratulations!” Rise said, trying her best to avoid being corrected once again.
It took a couple of seconds for Sayuri to actually process what she had heard. Even though this was the outcome she had been hoping for, it was not the one that she had expected due to the fact that her performance did not turn out as well as she wanted it to. However with this, the first step towards her dream had been achieved. A wave of relief washed over Sayuri as the results of the audition finally sunk in. With all her feelings of gratitude, she called out to everyone that supported her, "Thank you very much!"
“Eh… ? Me? Really?” Rice uttered with disbelief as her arms rose, only to cover her mouth with her thin-looking palms in pure ecstatic surprise. Tears welled up in her eye-lids from happiness – feeling that her hard work has finally bore fruit. Others cried around for – not because they were happy for Rice. No. They were sad to have failed to not meet Ichigo and Rise’s expectations.
“T-Thank… thank you so much!” she somehow pulled these words out of her mouth with desperation as her crying-self almost disallowed her from speaking altogether.
While Ichigo and Rise’s smile waned from such a scene; seeing Rice’s happy face was a real treat to them.
