Extreme comedy (try Sickipedia, or one of my favourite comics Jimmy Carr) is funny because it's extreme; it's not the event that's being laughed at, it's that a clever joke has been made of something which ought not to be laughed at. You know a joke is good when the audience laugh instinctively, then given a moment to think go 'oooooooooh'.
