The donation model works well for individuals or very small teams. Some of the biggest creators on Patreon receive thousands of dollars each month, and after fees and taxes, they might still get to keep several thousands at the end of the month. That's a pretty lucrative business for a single person.

FAKKU, however, is a company, meaning we have a large staff, an office building with equipment, licensing and royalty fees, printing, storage, and shipping costs, etc. This is very different from a person who converted a room in their apartment to an office and create their content from there. This is not meant as a jab against those creators; I only want to illustrate that a company has a lot of extra costs that your typical Patreon-funded creator doesn't.

I would suggest looking through the adult categories on a site such as Graphtreon. You'll find that even if you limit yourself to the top earners, the vast majority don't even earn enough to support two people at US minimum wage. This is fine for the independent creator, but obviously unsustainable for a company.

For the sake of transparency, I have zero involvement in our finances and no real knowledge/interest when it comes to economics. Still, I'm fairly certain you need more than a couple thousands per month (before any deductions) to run a localization/publishing business.

We currently don't publish that magazine, so right now it's unlikely that series will make it over here that way. If the same content is available through a doujinshi release however, we could look into the option of localizing that release.

Hard to sum it up in just a few tags, as I feel the style is rather distinct. While there are pure vanilla chapters in here, a lot of the stories flirts with darker themes. It's not anything extreme, but this book definitely hits that gray area which makes it stand out. I was constantly reminded of Shoujo Material while working on it, and I believe that's the best comparison here. If you like Hanaharu Naruco's style of storytelling, I'm fairly certain you'll enjoy this one.


We're all for doing older titles! The above-mentioned Shoujo Material just turned 10 years old this year, and Legend of the Overfiend first came out in Japan over 30 years ago. It is, however, sometimes harder to license older titles for a myriad a reasons, which I expended on in this topic.

And I don't think there's such a thing as a book being "too big" for us to work on. This is going to be our largest single-volume release to date, but both Metamorphosis and S&M Ecstasy (for a more recent example) are both around 240 pages. Unfortunately I can't talk about it yet, but stay stuned in early 2019 for another example of our willingness to take on titles with a hefty page count.

Whether or not a chapter has already been translated, be it through legit means or not, is irrelevant to us. Every magazine chapter you see on FAKKU is translated and typeset by our staff, and our goal is to do all the chapters in our magazines regardless.

Earlier this year, we brought back a number of fan favorite artists with our release of Comic Koh Vol.1. One of those artists is hentai legend Yamatogawa, and as the year comes to a close, we're thrilled to announce that we have a lot more Yamatogawa coming your way!

We are proud to announce that FAKKU has acquired the rights to Yamatogawa's entire body of work; six full book releases spanning over a decade.

We've already decided on our first release, the author's second book and what we believe is one of their most iconic titles: Witchcraft! You can already pre-order it, as you only have to wait a little over a month for it to come out in early January. For more into on this title, check this discussion topic.

However, for our next release, we've once again decided to leave that decision to the community.

You can vote to decide the order of which books we publish next, until the polls close on December 15th. The title with the most votes at the end of that period is scheduled to be released in summer/fall of 2019. We also reserve the rights to swap any planned title should the artist release a brand new book at any point (as we will be publishing it). In this case, we'll still do the old title at a later date.

Aqua Bless (2007)
Short Description: This collection of stand-alone stories includes a girl "suffering" from sexual telepathy, an appropriate double chapter with two twins, a hero show definitely not suitable for children, and many more wacky stories. Yamatogawa's style of comedy is already well-established in this debut title.



TayuTayu (2009)
Short Description: We meet a boy who moved to Tokyo 8 years ago, but when his parents flies overseas for work, he's forced to move back to the countryside to look after their house. He rushes down a rainy shopping street, and after he finally comes across a store that's still open, he slams open the door to a fortune telling shop run by the bespectacled beauty Kagami Kyouko. I'm fairly certain we have the best data on our own top sellers. We take that and many other factors into account when deciding which titles to release.

Yes. While I can't say when we'll pick up newer and/or older magazines, the ones we've already started will absolutely be finished.

I think that will vary depending on which retailer/site you're looking at. If you check out the Toranoana bestseller list for 2017, you'll find Key, Michiking, MEME50, Fujimaru, Siokonbu, Okumoto Yuta, and Bota Mochito all in the top 30. Almost 25% of that list is available here. Naturally, there's no list for all of 2018 yet, but for the first half of the year, Ikuhana Niiro is topping the list as #1, and Higenamuchi is actually higher ranked than Shindo L.

Point is this is 100% subjective. You can never convince me that your favorite artist is better than mine, so bringing up the "quality" of an artist makes for a pretty weak argument here. At the end of the day, none of these artists would have magazine and book deals if no one liked them.

We could try it out for special occasions, but it might be a bit much to tweet previews and the actual release for each chapter. We've thought about other ways to implement some sort up preview feature for upcoming releases though, so that might be coming at some point.


We have that option, but unless we see a sudden surge of interest for the magazine, I don't think it's very likely to happen any time soon.


Only in the sense that we already have an established business relationship with that artist/publisher, meaning we most likely could get it if we wanted to. It's not a major factor when it comes to us deciding which titles to publish. In fact, the next three books are all new content that's not in the subscription.


Not my decision to make, but I imagine so. Although if it means expanding the team, the increase would need to be substantial enough to support that.

I think a lot of it comes down to how people define vanilla. While most genres are defined as the inclusion of something—cheating, cosplay, netorare have these themes—vanilla is often defined as the lack of something—it doesn't have extreme content or niche themes. It's like calling any movie that doesn't have giant robots, alien invasions, or post-apocalyptic wastelands mainstream. Sure, by that definition, 99% of all movies are mainstream, but it's not a very useful categorization. You'll never see anything close to parity between giant robot movies and every comedy, action, thriller, etc. combined.

This is why we define it differently, where vanilla mainly refers to romantic or generally sweet stories. Following this definition, vanilla has consistently made up around 40% of the content on the site, which is reasonable in my opinion. Sex and romance are closely connected, so this is to be expected when you have adult-themed stories. Anything that deviates from this is going to be the exception, and artists dedicated to those genres alone are even more rare. As a result, you'll always find the market to be dominated by "vanilla" releases, no matter if you look at just FAKKU or the Japanese industry as a whole.

As for the book choices, you have to understand where the books are coming from: the magazines. Look at the suggestions you brought up: Butcha-U has three chapters from our magazines published in recent years, Shindo-L has two, and Takeda Hiromitsu has zero. Naturally, we do pick up older books from time to time, but it makes more sense to mostly work with artists who are still active. I can't make any promises, but I imagine any new book from these artists would at least be brought up for consideration internally.

Finally, popular artists gain popularity by appealing to the largest audience, which is true for any form of media. Look at the upcoming releases from our publishing partners and I'm sure most of it will be "vanilla." We'll consider all books, but if there's only one "non-vanilla" title out of a dozen candidates, the odds are inherently stacked against it. For example, how many full-length books that focuses exclusively on monster girls even exist? I bet we can find artists from Kairakuten who have more books under their belt than any list you can come up with, especially if we try to limit ourselves to well-known artists.

We go out of our way to pick up niche titles such as Futabu! Mix and Does This Strange Body Please You?, so if anything, our bias doesn't lie with vanilla.

Keep in mind that we don't have the resources to work on every game/doujin that's brought to our attention, so it's unlikely contacting Japanese artists will lead to anything. However, if you have a product that's already in English, I'm sure we'd consider it as long as the translation and overall quality is up to par.
