Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Your Thoughts. . .?
I've heard anywhere from really awesome to destroying the mobile suit name. Mistakesofyouth.com (posted from Fakku news post) had the latter to say about it. I have also heard it likened to Gundam Wing. However I do think the Hi-Def mechas look pretty bitchin', even if one of the main character looks like a girl.

It seems like it's picking and choosing its ideas from earlier Gundam series, most notably in the pilots, who run the gamut from Gundam Wing's "unsociable guy devoted to mission" to the earlier Gundam series' wide variety of Newtypes and other such mysterious people with mysterious powers - as a result of that wide variation, though, only one pilot comes out anywhere near likable are believable as a character. The mecha are fairly boring, with even the Gundams being non-notable compared to the last few Gundam shows. The number of irrelevant characters who show up a couple of minutes each episode to make mysterious comments without even their names being known or get large parts of episodes to themselves despite having no impact on the rest of the show are an irritation as well.

I have mixed feelings about the show so far. First off, I have to say it is one of the most beautifully animated shows I've seen. Hands down. That first opening sequence from Ep 1 never fails to leave me speechless.
But so far the thing thats bugging me the most is lack of character development. As Gelmax said, The number of irrelevant characters who show up a couple of minutes each episode to make mysterious comments without even their names being known or get large parts of episodes to themselves despite having no impact on the rest of the show are an irritation as well... I dislike that. Course I'm behind the times, I've only seen up to episode 5, cuase my computer started refusing to give me audio on the episodes, so viewing is on hold till I figure that out. But it is still early in the show, and I'm hoping the character depth will grow with it.
Thing 00 has going for it currently IMO, is the really realistic combat. If you've seen the episodes you know what I'm talking about so I don't have to go into detail. But its really pleasing to me to see the effort thats been put into it.
I guess so far I'd give it a 7/10

but i want to give the production team a credit....the script writer is a man who dont know much about Gundam series.....the man who behind FMA....he did a good job so far as he uses the world issue as the main idea of the plot....but i want to see if, he goes to far, then i will reject this series.....

I'm a fairly dedicated Gundam fan, so it might not mean much coming from me when I say that this show is good.
The first and foremost problem with the show has be addressed here already- the lack of character development. However, I think the show takes it for granted that the viewers are moderately intelligent and hence they don't waste a lot of airtime going back into each of the characters' pasts and then stretching the story (I swear if this was going to be 51 episodes as well, I would have considered giving up... for a second).
Anyone who has watched FMP, can pretty much guess Setsuna's backstory. It doesn't actually need a flashback arc. Allelujah's split personality and him being an advanced is nothing new to us either.. so that's a no brainer as well. Lockon and Tieria have had the least character development so far (which is a shame considering that Lockon is probably the most awesome character as of yet).
Besides the Gundam Meisters, the main focus of the show is put on the global conflict and the political upheaval rather than personal stories; and so far I think they've done a fairly commendable job with it. Although I still don't understand what is the overall significance of Saji Crossroad and Louise Halevy.... =\
The animation is SO CRISP. it pleases my eyeballs ^_^

Gundam 00 is a good show, probably one of the better ones out there despite its problems. Here is a list of certain things for and against the anime (in my opinion):
+ The politcal and world perspective is pulled off fairly well. Showing stuff that is going on behind the scenes without completely spoiling it is not done enough in anime.
+ Gundams that are powerful without being overkill (it may not feel that way but since the Gundams have actually been threatened by those low-class MS, it means that the right strategy can finish off the Gundams)
+ Having completely normal characters like Saji and Louise. From people like these two we see how the masses see Celestial Being's actions without the underlying motives from the other characters. (at least, that's the case, in theory) Also, normal characters are an extreme rarity in just about any anime.
+ The animation is great, though the character designs aren't original, making me feel like I'm watching a Code Geass knock-off.
- Lack of general character development. Perhaps this is due to the world perspective with the creation of so many important characters, but it still isn't really acceptable. (Setsuna is about as emotional as English Heero Yuy.)
- Lack of originality. As others have said, it's Gundam Wing all over again, with a mix of various aspects of other Gundam series. (Newtype stuff, etc.)
- Pointlessness. (Opinion) I said having normal characters is good, but their appearances feel a little too random and don't actually contribute much to the plot. Add to that, Setsuna revealed his identity to 'that person' and that Setsuna made that useless trip to 'that person' in episode 14.
- Fanservice. (Could also go under the point above) Swimsuits and evening dresses which show off massive amounts of cleavage make the anime hard to take seriously. It's what I like to call Dragonaut Syndrome. If I wanted to see (insert female's name here) in sexy clothes or in nothing at all, I would just look at a doujinshi. With this, I can see why Gundam has lost some of its credibility. I can't remember any sort of fanservice in the entirety of Gundam Wing. Sure there was nudity in 8th MS Team and partial nudity and a little breast bouncing in Gundam Seed, but Gundam 00 is very blatant with it. (I just can't get over how often we see Sumeragi's cleavage.)
That aside, I personally like Saji and Louise the most out of all the characters. There's just something about a normal couple in a show that has unrealistic mecha pilots, strategic planners, and politicians that makes them more 'real' than the rest of the cast. Both are good-natured but have their faults. Saji is a little indecisive and Louise is a little too spoiled. However, it's moments like those when Louise tries to get her mother to accept Saji that just seem to make things better. However, there is a very high chance that one, or both of them, may die or otherwise get involved with Celestial Being or the other world powers (this is a Gundam series after all).
@berry: Information about Veda has yet to be revealed. However, it can reasonably be assumed that Aeolia Shuhenberg did die and thus isn't Veda. My thoughts are that Veda is another person yet to be shown, a highly developed AI, or, like the AI scenario, an AI that simulate Shuhenberg's personality.
I'll probably come back to discuss each episode after its subbed when I have time.

I totally agree with ur oppinion, I mean the negative side.
but,I feel this series started to bore me....eventhough it still early to say anything....yeah, still ep 14....the new OP n ED is just sucks to me, unlike the first one.Daybreaks Bell n Wana.
SEED is better than this....they try to insert the world issue but they cant make the storyline better....then, they fail hard on the things mentioned by ZeroOBK on the negative side....
I try to love this series but, it cant make me feel special like other anime that i love such as bleach n SEED....i mean, the feeling is like electrostatic on my body hair....
they try to insert some sensitive issue like religious issue, but they failed....i know they want to say about Islam problem in terms of modernization, but they didnt mention the name of the religious.....but its quite understandable....try go search in wikipedia n see the plot summaries in each episode n u will find the title IMAM for massad ramadi....imam is a title in Islam like a priest in christianity....its not official cuz its publicly write by anybody....so, we can see this anime manage to show to the people that Islam denies modernization....this is false fact actually....it starts bothering me....

It will eventually be a 51 episode series (proximately 52), in the first season it will stop at the 25th episode. After that Studio Sunrise will release Code Geass the second season. After Code Geass 2nd season has ended, they will release the 2nd season of Mobile suit Gundam 00. I hope that won't break your spirit.

Aside from stating a personal opinion about which you like more, I don't think 00 and SEED can really be compared. They both are essentially war dramas, they share a world filled with war and convoluted political situations, and have badass giant robots. The drastic difference between them is in the story telling. SEED is a purely character and emotion driven show. This seems to piss some people off, but I actually quite enjoy it, and think that the show's point can come across all the more powerfully for the over the top emotion that comes trough the characters. And the realism suffers a blow because of the same emotion. Like when a mobile suit suddenly gains enormous power way beyond its technical limitations and destroys some more powerful suit, all because of say, the anger its pilot was feeling at the time. Or, when a previously impervious ship suddenly can take huge damage from mere missiles, just so tension can be added, and the story line advanced. But thats ok, its the way it is, and no other anime (at least gundam anyway) has managed to make me so attached to the characters, story, or anything. And when I watch it, everything is present in such a way that it really lets me explore my own emotions and sort of bring a concrete understanding to a lot of ways that I view the world. Its easy to relate to I guess.
Anyway, didn't want to make this a SEED discussion, just pointing out some of the differences as I see them.
My opinion on 00 has been pretty much summed up here. And so far I think its an equally good story. Just not presented with such an intimate view of the characters. Still, we have been getting some back story, which is nice. Poor Setsuna... Pretty screwed up childhood that kid had :(
Also, despite the overall amount of realism the show has, I still think the Virtue is ridiculously overpowered.
Um... Oh yeah, one other comment I wanted to make was on Veda. Number one, I doubt it has any connection with Shuhenberg. Unless of course it was another of his creations. And I think instead of being an AI (though that perfectly plausible) I pictured it as just an insanely powerful computer, built to analyze any data given to it, and spitting out all possible outcomes or something. Not necessarily an AI in other words. Just a really high end military supercomputer. But I'm sure we'll find out sooner or later.
And yes. The new Op/Eds suck >_<

nah
i dont really like gundam series
but after i force myself to watch about 2 eps of gundam seed i like it watch till the end
gundam 00 also war drama. i cant even start to like it even after 3 or 4 eps. its a torture. For gundam diehard fan since long ago even before the best seed and even before wing, this gundam 00 series should be a big dissappointment, in mecha design and in story. The mecha is getting more and more like Fafner type, well i dont really care about design that much but for the sake of timeline, it shouldnt be that way since they try to bring it back to Anno Domini timeline.
The story? Most gundam not really have a very good story, or became too predictable or too slow because of wanting to make up to 50 episodes. However this gundam 00 series is beyond worst, only up to around 10 eps, I already gave up on it. Its like between final fantasy 10 and 12. 10 have great stories and good emotional value along the game while 12 only have politic conflict and sub par story. Twisted politic conflict does not make up to it except for people who think they're clever and the politic part also clever on the same level as their robotic mind

@ sham_lix:
Okay ... what are you trying to say about the design of the mechas? You say you don't care, but you also say how it shouldn't be that way in the AD timeline. Can I ask you for an example of how an AD mecha would look like? Part of my frustration here is that I honestly have no clue what you are talking about.
Personally speaking, I'm glad the designs are not the usual fare. The last thing I needed to see is a Gundam show that takes place in a different timeline that has the exact same Zaku designs as dozens of other Gundam shows (also with differing timelines). One of my reasons for liking Wing was that the Zaku was completely absent.
With regards to the story ... I don't think a war-torn space opera could be completed within the usual 26 episode limit regardless of how good or bad the pacing is. I haven't played FF12 so I don't understand your analogy, but it's not about the politics being "clever". The politics act as a means to show the audience how the world is changing via the influence Celestial Being has on the most powerful nations. *shrugs* At least, that's how I see it as. You're free to feel differently of course.
I'll agree with you that Seed was good, but I've never seen Seed Destiny so I can't comment on that part.

oh sorry for your frustation in understanding my opinion here
What i meant of the mecha design is its getting 'skinnier' and more and more like human or like eva. while in AD timeline expected to be 'boxes' shape. Well certainly they showed us some slightly boxes design just to imitate universal century type gundam. obviously people looking at boxes shape as ugly but then its the more reason why they shouldnt bring it to AD just so they can use current political border, yet in the end its only 2 or 3 side as usual. As you said I'm free to feel different towards it, right? the animation is getting better, but the story is getting worse.
I like seed because its my first gundam before I backtrack to older gundam to wing, so I maybe biased of seed to be my best. best in animation and story, however looking at destiny and other gundam before, at how all the plot are soo repetitive, i'm gonna said seed destiny sucks, good you not watch it yet.
last but not least, just to show a character from gundam 00
a guy or a girl?

its fortunate they're making gundam 00 shorter 25. I'll just collect them though. Watching them is a torture to me, i would prefer to rewatch seed or any nice UC stories.

Ah. Now I see what you mean about the style of the Mobile Suits. They sure have that odd combination of skinny and boxy MS don't they? Anyway, like I said, you're free to like it, dislike it, or completely loathe its mere existence. I feel no animosity towards you at all either way. My first Gundam experience was with Wing, like so many others. So I suppose that's why I'm pretty positive about this series. 00 however, seems to have fanservice unlike Wing, which is my most serious qualm about it. Sumeragi-san is the most serious offender, and the "bridge bunnies" aren't helping matters. I don't want to watch another Dragonaut.
BTW, the picture link is broken. So I can't answer yet. I'm pretty good at spotting traps. In fact, Bridget is the only trap I can recall that I didn't figure as being male. Even the pilot of Virtue I knew was male after about a second of him on-screen.
Also, it goes like this, 1st season of Gundam 00, 2nd season of Code Geass, then the 2nd season of Gundam 00. So it still has around 52 episodes.

well, you wont know he is a boy unless you hear the voice. yet in the picture showing him using such a girly handbag, such a bag that not a boy would use, more over for him to hang it on shoulder is kinda... well you see some of guys like that which is male physically but female inside

I watched episode 16, the second half is pretty much flashback stuff. At least it wasn't an entire episode. The first half was pretty good and this episode delves into a different kind of political drama than before. The next episode looks to be interesting. Really there's not much too say about ep. 16.
