Antw0n's Guide to Gundam for Newcomers[/h]
Do you want to get into Gundam but have no idea where to start?
Well you've come to the right place.
This guide is to help aspiring fans of Gundam get their start into this fantastic franchise.

Gendu/m/ Chat
I run a Gundam/Mecha Skype group called Gendu/m/ Chat.
The #1 way to get into Gundam is talking to a good group of people who know all about it.
Join in if you're up to it! Just add me, i_am_antw0n on Skype, and ask about Gendu/m/ Chat!

Knowing each series
To get into Gundam the right way, you need to familiarize yourself with the various series' Gundam has to offer.
The guide will give short descriptions of each series, including ratings and more.
Each series will also have an indication of the type of show it is (Anime, OVA, or Movie) as well as a personal 1 to 5 rating from me.
Note: The 1 to 5 ratings are based on my personal opinion, and other opinions can and will differ.

5 = A MUST-watch. This is what Gundam is all about.
4 = An all around great series.
3 = Good, not great. Worth watching.
2 = Not so great. It's your call if you wanna take the risk.
1 = Just bad. I've probably dropped this before finishing, it was so bad.

Different Universes
There are quite a few different universes in Gundam.
Universal Century - The setting of the original Gundam series. Unless listed otherwise in the series guide, a series takes place in the Universal Century.
Alternate Universes - Certain Gundam series stray from the Universal Century to create a whole new world. I wont list them all off, as usually there's only 1 Gundam series per alternate universe. Series in Alternate Universes are not related to Universal Century, or any other Century.

The Series Guide[/h]

Spoiler:
Mobile Suit Gundam Anime, Universal Century
5
The first Gundam series, and a start of a revolution.
Universal Century 0079: The Principality of Zeon has declared its independence from the Earth Federation, and subsequently launched a massive war of independence, a war which has raged in every continent on earth and in nearly every space colony and lunar settlement. The Zeon have the upper hand through their use of a revolutionary new type of weapon, their humanoid like mobile suits. When a Zeon recon team disobey mission orders and begin attacking Side 7 its citizens stumble across the Federations latest weapon: the Gundam. With the aid of Earth Federation soldiers stationed aboard the MS carrier White Base the newly formed crew of refugees set out to change the course of the One Year War — or die trying.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Anime, Universal Century
5
It is U.C.0087, seven years after the end of the One Year War. After the events of Operation Stardust (see Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory), the Earth Federation establishes an elite counter-insurgency division called the Titans to hunt down the remaining pockets of Zeon remnants. The Titans become overzealous in their mission, start resorting to brutal methods to achieive their goals, and become nothing more than ruthless tyrants with an ambition to rule the Earth Sphere. Two anti-Titans resistance groups, the AEUG (Anti-Earth Union Group) and their earth-bound counterparts Karaba, form to unite the various existing small forces in the struggle against Titans.
Kamille Bidan is a troubled civilian seventeen-year old from Side 7's Green Noa 1 colony. His personal resentment towards the Titans results in him joining the AEUG.

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ Anime, Universal Century
3
As the continuation of Zeta Gundam, this series once again follows the story of the AEUG battleship Argama after Zeta's final episode. To fight off the Axis Zeon, now called the Neo Zeon, Captain Bright Noa recruits a group of teenage junk collectors led by the loudmouthed but powerful Newtype Judau Ashta to pilot the Argama's mobile suits. Now sporting a line up of the behemoth Double Zeta Gundam and the returning Zeta Gundam, Gundam Mk-II and Hyaku Shiki, the group is nicknamed the Gundam Team.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory OVA, Universal Century
5
Universal Century 0083: Zeon Intelligence has identified a prototype Gundam designed for nuclear attack under development by Anaheim Electronics. A former Zeon ace and a small band of Principality soldiers are dispatched to Earth to capture the Gundam as part of Operation Stardust. When the Zeon successfully make off with the prototype the Earth Federation assigns the mobile suit carrier Albion to locate and recover the missing unit.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team OVA, Universal Century
4
Universal Century 0079: The Jungles of Southeast Asia. During the One Year War, the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon are fighting a brutal guerrilla war for control of the area and its resources. Zeon’s best hope for victory in the region rests with an experimental mobile armor, the Apsalus and its pilot, Aina Sahalin. Meanwhile the Earth Federal Army, which has been fighting the Zeon in the region, receive reinforcements in the form of Ensign Shiro Amada, newly named commander of the 08th MS Team.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket OVA, Universal Century
4
December, Universal Century 0079. Zeon intelligence has identified a prototype Federation Gundam under development in a Federation base in the Arctic. The Cyclops Team, an elite Zeon MS commando team is dispatched to destroy the prototype, but before they can accomplish their mission the Gundam is launched into space. When the Gundam turns up in a Federation R&D base inside the neutral space colony Side 6 , the Principality launches a covert operation to destroy the Gundam. When the raid fails, the Zeon prepares to launch a nuclear strike against the colony as punishment for siding with the Federation unless the last remaining commando can eliminate the Gundam.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack Movie, Universal Century
3
Synopsis hidden to avoid spoilers. Watch only after watching Mobile Suit Gundam, and Zeta.

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam Anime, Universal Century
3
The greatly weakened Earth Federation comes under attack by the BESPA forces of the spaceborn Zanscare Empire; only the AEUG-like League Militaire stands in their way. The mass-produced Victory Gundam is the League Militaire's secret weapon against the invading BESPA.

Mobile Suit Gundam F91 Movie, Universal Century
2
The story of Gundam F91 revolves around teenage space colonist Seabook Arno, his girlfriend Cecily Fairchild, and the efforts of the Crossbone Vanguard militia, led by Cecily's grandfather Meitzer Ronah, to establish an aristocracy known as "Cosmo Babylonia".
Originally planned as a full-length television series, Gundam F91 hit a production snag due to staff disputes, and the project was stopped after the screenplays for the first thirteen episodes were written. It was then decided that what was made of the show would be condensed into a theatrical feature film. Condensing a story originally intended to be told over the course of fifty half-hour episodes into less than two hours of screen time required much of the original story to be cut.[/h]

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OVA, Universal Century
4
The story begins in UC 0001, at the very beginning of human space colonization, with the Laplace Incident, a major event that influences the course of human history forever.
The main story takes place in UC 0096, three years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack and seventeen years after the One Year War.
NOTE: This series is currently ongoing.

The following series take place in Alternate Universes, separate from the Universal Century where the series already listed took place.

Spoiler:
∀ Gundam (AKA Turn A Gundam) Anime, Correct Century
3
The story of Turn A is viewed from a third perspective mainly concerning the events that happened to the main character Rolan Cehack. Rolan is a recruit of the Moonrace which was sent to Earth on a recon mission for the later Moonrace massive migration back to Earth, which was planned 100 years ago with no positive response from Earth. With aggressive parties of Moonrace and Earthlings, a war soon broke out between the migrants and the current residents of the area called Ameria, once called 'America', which the Moonrace claimed to be theirs since their ancestors once lived there.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam Anime, Future Century
5
Mobile Fighter G Gundam was the first of the alternative Gundam Universe series that would be unrelated to the Universal Century Gundam series.
This series is set in Future Century (FC) 60, during the 13th Gundam Fight and it focuses on the Neo Japan Gundam Fighter, Domon Kasshu, who is in the fight as much to win as well as fulfill his own mission of tracking down his brother, who had stolen a mysterious Gundam; the Devil Gundam from the Neo Japan government.
This series took a different approach to the Gundam saga. Rather than having a war between the colonies and the Earth, a fighting tournament is held. This is called the Gundam Fight, it is held once every four years by the United Colonies Federation. Each country would send its own representative, that would pilot a Gundam, and the Gundams would then fight on the Earth until only one is left, and that Gundam's nation will then be able to obtain sovereign rights over all the nations, until another nation wins in the next Gundam Fight.

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Anime, After Colony
2
The story of Gundam Wing begins in the year After Colony 195, with the start of Operation Meteor, the scientists' plan for revenge against the OZ military organization. The operation involves five young boys who have each been chosen and trained by one of the five rogue scientists, then sent to Earth independently in extremely advanced Mobile Suits, one designed by each of the scientists, known as "Gundams".
The five Gundam Pilots — Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei — originally have no knowledge of each others' existence. On first meeting any of the other five, each pilot believes the others to be enemy pilots in new OZ mobile suit designs. Once the young pilots realize that they have the same objective of destroying OZ (and in some cases the same mission), they band together to help each other complete their goals.

After War Gundam X Anime
I haven't seen After War Gundam X, so I can't rate it. My estimated rating would be 3 out of 5.[/h]
Taking place 15 years after the 7th Space War, the surviving 98 million residents of Earth try to make a living as best they can in the post apocalyptic landscape. Mobile Suits and weapons left over from the war fall into the hands of civilians as well as other organizations on the planet. In an effort to keep the past from repeating itself, Jamil Neate brings together a crew of Vultures to search for Newtypes and protect them from being exploited. As they try to carry out this task, an old government rises from the ashes to try and unify the Earth as other forces slowly fan the flames of war once more between the newly formed New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army. Now the crew of the Freeden face a multitude of enemies as they try to prevent another catastrophic war.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Anime, Cosmic Era
1
This series begins with a war between Earth and the colonies that is similar to the One Year War of the original Gundam series. On one side is the Earth Alliance, and on the opposite is the space colonies that form ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty). Mankind is divided over human genetic engineering, with normal humans known as 'Naturals' and the genetically altered humans known as 'Coordinators'. Like the original series, ZAFT has a head start on mobile suit design, the Earth Alliance quickly catches up with its five prototype Gundam’s. With ZAFT having stolen four of the prototypes, young pilot Kira Yamato takes the Strike Gundam and is forced to fight his old friend Athrun Zala. Little do they know that there are sinister forces at work that go far beyond their worst nightmares...

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny Anime, Cosmic Era
1
Gundam SEED Destiny is the sequel to Gundam SEED and the second Gundam series to be set in the Cosmic Era timeline.
Synopsis hidden to avoid spoilers. Watch only after watching Gundam SEED. (If you would really want to.)[/h]

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Anime, Anno Domini
1
In the year 2307 AD, fossil fuels have all but vanished and the distribution of energy is unbalanced. Humanity now relies on three large-scale solar power systems controlled by three multinational power blocks: the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations (Union), the Human Reform League (HRL), and the Advanced European Union (AEU). With this nearly inexhaustible source of energy benefiting only these three powers and their allies, constant warfare erupted around the globe among minor countries for precious fuels and energy. Countries whose economy relied solely on the sale of fossil fuels were plunged into poverty and some even believed that the solar power system threatened the "promised land of God", resulting in the twenty year-long Solar Wars. Such a chaotic reality has lead to the creation of a paramilitary organization in possession of four highly advanced humanoid mobile suits called "Gundams" and a mysterious technology known as the "GN Drive". They call themselves Celestial Being, and their goal is nothing less than the complete eradication of war through the use of war itself.

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE Anime, Advanced Generation
5
Mobile Suit Gundam AGE takes place over the course of a century during a "One Hundred Year War". Mankind had migrated to space colonies several centuries ago, with wars on Earth having long ended. Suddenly during the Advanced Generation (AG) Year 101 an Unknown Enemy (UE) appears and starts to attack Earth and colonies starting a full-scale war. They destroy the space colony "Angel" in a disaster later referred to as "The Day the Angel Fell". In AG 108 the UE attack a once peaceful colony known as "Orvan". Flit Asuno, a seven-year-old boy at the time, had his mother killed in this attack. Before she died, she gave him the Asuno family heirloom—the "AGE Device " memory unit. Using plans hidden within this unit, Flit begins to develop the mobile suit "Gundam", humanity's last hope.

Gundam Build Fighters Anime
10[/h]
A second Gunpla boom is taking the world by storm, fueled by the revolutionary new ability to pilot your own Gunpla creations in "Gunpla Battles ". These incredibly-popular Battles culminate in a yearly global tournament. Our hero Sei Iori, is a young Gunpla builder who dreams of someday making it to the world championships.

What order should I watch?
For the best Gundam experience, most people will say production order.
Otherwise, here's my suggested order for you to watch:
First start with Mobile Suit Gundam. It's the first series, and the best way to get into it.
Afterwords, move on to Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
You could also watch Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ after Zeta, as it takes place very shortly after Zeta, but is considered optional.
At this point you could watch Char's Counterattack, for a direct continuation of Amuro and Char's story, or watch Stardust Memory, 08th MS Team, or War in the Pocket, which are all side-stories, for more on the One Year War era.
Other series in the Universal Century timeline don't have much to do with the originals- they can be watched at practically any time.
The Alternate Universes can be watched ANY time- hell, you could start with them if you want. They have nothing to do with the original story aside from the fact that their are Gundams. Typically

I hope this guide has helped.

Good review. I mainly agree with your ratings on this.
However, I would give Char's Counterattack a 5 rather than 4. It was the best Gundam movie ever.
Also, why don't you include Gundam 00's movie? I know it has somewhat poor ending, but you should include that anyway. It's still Gundam, after all.

It's pretty much widely regarded as the worst piece of shit to befall Gundam since SEED Destiny.
Figured I shouldn't bother.

I'd debate some of your choices:

1) The movie trilogy version of the original Gundam is vastly superior in most ways to the TV series. Tomino could get rid a lot of the crap that Bandai insisted on cramming into his war drama. (Better pacing, less merchandising driven monster suit of the week and more focus on plot and characters, better animation for the final attack on A Baoa Qu).

2) WTF are you doing giving the MS Gundam 0080 OVA only 3 Zakus? It has outstanding animation that aged *really* well, good, realistic character designs on par with anything else in the franchise.

Granted, it's a story not really focused on mobile suits, it's more a character drama and that fact it's about soldiers is sometimes even incidental... it's still one of the best damn war stories ever told, and one that's very much needed given how enamored some fans can be with mayhem and its tools (the mobile suits themselves). I know, I know... it's just fun! Still, I think a sharp reminder of what weapons are really used for is something that you can't be too anvilicious about.

...and when it's mecha time? Darn, do those suits looks mighty fine.

3) Wing by comparison has rather poor production values, it's cast is often rather two-dimensional while the plot can't really seem to make up its mind whether it wants to be a war drama or a political essay.

I'd give it 3 stars at most, although the nostalgia glasses probably make this entry a fondly remembered item on most fan's list.

4) While 0083 is one of my favorite OVAs, it does have its share of problems, the pacing of last handful of episodes could've been better handled and the motivations of the characters for taking the actions they do take could've used more screen time.

No, I'm not one of those fanboi raging on Nina Purpleton's actions... being a Lunarian who was wising up to the fact that the pretty toys she and Anaheim had been building were being used for war and mayhem and being sick of it made her actions make perfect sense, albeit the fact she was never given a chance to articulate her stance hurt her image. The only one who truly got the proper treatment was Anavel Gato (...and Cima Gaharu in her own special short... too bad it wasn't included in the actual OVA!)...

...however what about the *rest* of the cast? Why does Captain Synapse go against his superiors? Why does Kou Uraki keep chasing the rival even when there was no sense in it? We can make educated guesses, and these actions spring naturally from what we know of the characters... too bad that's all we get. Given how the show handled them so far, they really could've done with some more screen time.

@1- For the sake of the thread, I won't bother with the movie remakes and stuff.
@2- Sorry, it just didn't appeal to me as much as the other Gundams- 3 Zaku's is still worth watching!
@3- I'm not gonna lie. I want to give Wing a 3-Zaku. I gave it a 4 to keep fanboyfags shut-the-fuck-up'd. (SEEDfags can cry for all I care.)

Nina Purpleton was the root of problems in 0083 imo. ._.

Gundam X, is honestly a 3 Zaku there. Too bad it got cancelled because ratings went down due to sudden change of time slot from 5PM Friday to 6AM Saturday.

Lol Seed, the first was a 3 Zaku for me, but Destiny for me doesn't even deserve one.. lol
Gundam Age, just give it a 1 Zaku, Sunrise themselves has already claimed it was a failure.

I like Mobile suit Gundam 0080: The war in the pocket, Mobile Suit Gundam: the 08th MS team and Mobile suit victory Gundam (since Victory is the final timeline before the events of turn A Gundam, set many thousands of years in the future. Seriously, who wouldn't like a Gundam series where you can still see the really old bust still fighting Ra Calium fight the neat-o and better performing battleships of Zanscare? That was epic) and for me, they will still warrant a 5 zaku heads rating. I also need to agree to what Mr. Flaser stated about Stardust Memory; it is a bit confusing for what the feddies and the zekes were doing during the last episodes. My comrade in my workplace once stated that Stardust is the worst OVA made but for me, it's just so-so, unless they will do a remake for this OVA and actually straighten up everything and have it less confusing.

I dont know about SEED and Destiny since im not really a fan of it. I only like them because of the cool MS' but for 00 only two Zakus? I really think that 00 was great from season 1 to season 2, also the movie although the movie was a bit...uhh... but still it was awesome!

I also liked AGE, at first I thought it wont work but it turned out pretty great but not that great.

The characters were cliche, the Gundams invincible... and everything was eventually solved by GN magic fairy dust and Double-Oh Asspulls. Let's not forget the fujoshi bait Gundam pilots or the otaku pandering mamarry assault (there even was a beach episode!).

Season 1 had pretty much no whatsoever tension until the very end and when things finally started to get interesting (characters actually died!) things were rushed, so people tended to die the very moment when some noteworthy change happened to them.

Season 2 once again failed good character development and got rid of the interesting geo-politics that were the one saving grace of Season 1. Once again, people were killed off (or pretty much pidgeon holed into 1 dimensional caricatures of themselves - like what did Hallelujah *say* for 4/5 of the season?) the moment they could've made interesting choices, this time centered around their struggle on how they should deal with a central authority that has exceeded its mandate.
