Actually, Shinsen had this mad clumsy sentence right in the beginning. "It certainly is a chance you're in central" chance? How vague is that? Is he implying a not-so-coincidence or is he just saying that it's fortunate?
...That bothered me, otherwise shinsen did swell.

so whats the best subs there is?There are no best subs, there's only personal preference (choose for yourself).
3 major and respected groups picked this up (Taka, a 4th one is on the way) and all are getting good ratings that differ slightly from site to site.
Eclipse announced that there were some problems with their release and SHS helped them so any issues are likely to be resolved soon (though ImperialX may also be right that they lack proper knowledge about FMA which would be bad). They are also the least likely to get stalled/dropping the show.
gSS is a fun group combining experienced gg and BSS staffs but gg is currently in their lazy period so it might weigh on the releases. They also like to troll from time to time and experiment with the subs (already announced that they're going to 'tweak' the OP).
SHS proved the fastest for ep 1 and provided good overall quality but they often stay behind as a show progresses. If they don't - I'm perfectly fine with them.
Quality is excellent with all 3.
This site is often a good way to compare subs/encodes but it wasn't updated with FMA yet.

I'm actually suprise they didn't do it right from the start of the manga all over again. I guess they assumed a bunch of people already new. Btw, new seiyu for everyone else... somehow I don't recognize most of the voices other then the Elric Brothers. Oh well, it was a good episode to introduce all the new Seiyu and OMG, I love seeing Maes Hugh and his lovey doveyness all over again. His daughter is too cute XP...

Previous season? Anyways, Hughes died the same way in the manga as well.

Wow, I have to read that section again.
Btw, anyone find the new VA of Roy Mustang... to be quite un Roy Mustang like? I dunno, something just makes it wierd. It's kind of he's more hot blooded when he's not suppose to be.

It seems like everyone else liked this but... I don't know. For me the first ep was a major let down. Felt really disjointed on how they tried to throw as many characters at you as possible. I'm only going to give this series a few more episodes to live up to the original anime before I dump it. No use letting a craptacular retelling ruin what was already a good story.
And on the whole Roy Mustang thing, I think that all of the characters were put into a concentrated form for this episode. So hopefully they will simmer him down a bit for the rest of the series.

The first episode is for the purpose of introducing all the characters again. Things will start to move quite fast and new viewers might get lost.
Just so that you know, the majority of people who read the manga really hated the original anime, because it was nowhere near the epicness of the manga. That's why we have high hopes for FMA:B, which will remain loyal to the manga.

Well, i hope so, i was sort of confused on how diferent they made the ep 1. But yeah, i think it would be best to wait for a couple of more episodes to see how it turns out
