Taking a break to think about what to do next.

Did you guys ever wonder why Kuma sent the Strawhat pirates to different places of the world. I think he was trying to protect them while he still has some of his concious lefted in him. remember when The one dude(forgot his name)the dude that can control people and has the highest known bounty right now said that Kuma still had his conciousness until recently. My hypothesis is that he didn't want Luffy and them to get involved in the war and knows that Luffy is Dragon's son. That is why he sent them flying instead of beating them in Shabondy Park. Well, that is just my thought.
What do you guys think?

I agree with Kuma wanting to protect the Strawhats, but not with not wanting Luffy to get involved in the war. Kuma understood that as they are now, the Strawhats are weak. Kuma's motive in sending the Strawhats to different places in the world is to strengthen the Strawhats. This is either through sending a Strawhat to a place where they may improve his skill set (Nami, Franky, Usopp) or they may meet a future nakama (Zorro), or even both (Luffy).

No doubt, Kuma knows that Luffy is Dragon's son, but I believe that isn't the reason why Kuma sparred them 2x now. Had Zorro not stepped in the first time they met Kuma, Kuma would have sent Luffy straight to Impel Down. I believe that Kuma did those things because he believes in the potential of the Strawhat crew as a whole.

I'm just watching the anime now; when I've caught up with the anime I'll probably start reading the manga and will be able to join in these conversations properly. It's amazing how much it's developed just up to the Thriller Bark arc (where I am now) and how it's kept its energy rather than flattening out and giving the impression that it's a chore for its author to write (like certain other shounen I won't mention by name).

It's just a shame that Unlimited Cruise managed to subtly spoil so many of the plot points for me, despite having a stand-alone plot itself. It gives away a lot of the character relationships as well as just showing enemies up to and including the Thriller Bark arc (so even before I saw Skypiea, I'd already seen Oars and Moria) but that aside, and assuming you're all up-to-date with it anyway, I really recommend the game if you haven't already played it. It's on the Wii and out in the UK but not the US or Canada.

Yeah I agree. And maybe because he didn't want them to go to the New World yet. As they are no match for the 4 Emperors. They wouldn't survive going to the New World as they are now.

When you catch up to the Anime you should just read from where it lefted off in the Anime. It's basically the same.

Funny little detail about Magellan:

His name came from the explorer that has travelled around the world, Ferdinand Magellan. He died in Mactan, on the island of the Philippines by the hands of Lapu-Lapu.

I don't think that's exactly meant to be subtle or anything. Magellan is a world-famous name associated with the sea. Same as Blackbeard, obviously named after the real pirate and with the same real name, Edward Teach. There was also a real Golden Age of Piracy and that's when Blackbeard was around. Also, less famously than those two, there was a real pirate called François l'Olonnais, hia last name being written in Japanese as ロロノア or Roronoa. "Axehand" Morgan shares a name with Henry Morgan, a privateer. And talking of that, the Shichibukai are basically Privateers; legalised pirates working for a navy.

It's nice that for all its wackiness and fantasy, Oda has linked One Piece to real pirating history in various ways. There are some other nice name puns, like Usopp being a mix of "Uso" (to lie) and "Aesop" (the famous storyteller).

Oh crap. You're right. I just researched them now after reading your post. So that is why Usopp always tell those funny stories like the fish one.

It's good then you didn't or you would have missed this week's chapter. Oda does take a lot of breaks, but at least he made every chapter worth the wait.

Finally caught up with the anime and then read on in the manga to the most recent chapter... And see that Oda's taking another break next week. On the bright side, my friend's going to be in Japan when movie 10 comes out and is gonna get me the "volume 0" manga they're giving out to people buying tickets for the movie.

In an upcoming SBS, Oda drew the Straw Hats genderswapped. So, official rule 63.

This Luffy is obsessed with salad rather than meat. There's loads of fanart being produced of these official genderswaps each day.

It turns out the "volume 0" free gift thing is "chapter 0" plus some extra stuff like sketches and concept art. You can get it here or here.

I'm looking for a camrip. Hopefully it'll be a decent one, I have seen some ones of reasonable quality in the past (like, not much worse than YouTube quality).
