It was shitty but it was showing Shinji reaching the goal of removing his personal barriers. I can't remember what the name of the project was, but the idea was to break all the intra- and inter-personal barriers people had.

If I remember correctly, it was called the Humanity Instrumentality Project. To have no single flaw by uniting every soul into one singularity.
Though, that didn't quite happen in End of Evangelion, despite it being a direct sequel. His motivation to act went worse than when he first met the Unit 01.

The ending of the TV series (and consequently EoE) was Shinji accepting that his life was worth living. And he chose that of his own volition even while knowing all the pain he will undoubtedly be put through and put others through.

Done with that movie and the rebuild. Took me 2 days to finish the entire serie and the movies.
