Seriously, who the fuck does Tegumi think she is, talking about nailing and screwing and not even showing some boob. For shame.
The best we ever got was some legs, glasses and hair. But, dem legs.

And you think a hammer will work in getting a screw to fasten something securely? Heh, funny. No, in that analogy, it is what YOU think.
I know what the analogy was. The analogy was wrong.
See, your purpose would be to fastening something. You do so using the nail or screw. That would be fine I suppose, as they would represent social networks, blogs, and forums.
However, the place where you screw up your analogy is when you introduce two tools. The hammer and screwdriver. Because of this, you fucked up trying to make it a valid analogy. Since one would represent the internet, the screwdriver, the other would have to represent another, snail mail and hammer.
Do you see why it doesn't work?
Now if you had an analogy where you had a screwdriver, and say two different type of screws you would have had a proper analogy.

Their set purpose is to communicate information over the internet. All three of them.Anything that sends packets to a network has the purpose of communicating information over the internet. That doesn't make a modem anywhere near the same category as a blog or forum, now does it?
Do I need to stipulate people in this? I guess I need to stipulate people in this.
All three of them are means by which you communicate information between people on the internet.
Should I go a step further? Ok.
Their primary purpose is to communicate information between people on the internet while using handles as a means of creating an internet persona with which you use to communicate.

And there is no set definition of the three terms. If there was a set definition of the three terms that wouldn't include the other two terms, then there would end up being a whole lot more than just the three of them needing to be used. There is a set definition, and it has to do with purpose. And I explained it to you already.
You mean the definition you provided with qualifiers that mean along the lines of "often". Yeah, that's not called a set definition.

if youre going to be that goddamn vague then you can say dogs and humans are the same thing cause they both eat and poop and breathe

Though that's the point I'm making, is they don't have set definitions like you could get with humans and dogs. You just have vague definitions that create a lot of overlapping between the two and you go more of "this is the typical one" than "this is what they are."

And lo, the wall hath spoken. Unmoved and unshaken, clinging to its place despite someone suggesting the ground which it occupies is littered with horseshit.

Anyone looking at this argument can see it. Unfortunately, the only thing that matters is if you see it yourself.

I know what the analogy was. The analogy was wrong.Depends on how you view it. Yes, the analogy is wrong, because it illustrates your methodology of thinking. As for representing what your argument was, it is not wrong.

Since one would represent the internet, the screwdriver, the other would have to represent another, snail mail and hammer. No, no, no! What? How did you even come up with that? The purpose, as you said, is communication over the internet. This analogy is YOUR philosophy, keep in mind. Not mine.
Kalistean wrote...
Now if you had an analogy where you had a screwdriver, and say two different type of screws you would have had a proper analogy. No, because the screwdriver is not the purpose. The purpose is to secure two things together by means of a thin metal implement.
Also, since it is clear you misunderstand my analogy, I will explain it to you. YOU think that two things, because they have a similar purpose, are, in fact, the same thing. I am telling you this is wrong.

Hey guys, did you know boats are cars? They both take a person from point x to point y, therefore they are the same thing!

Ok, let's go over the analogy slowly with you so you can understand how you fucked up.
The purpose, let's get this, the purpose of a nail or screw is to fasten something together. This would be the purpose of the social networking sites and so on.
The nail or screw itself would be the social networking sites and blogs and forums.
So you move onto the tool, what you use to have the nail or screw perform its purpose. What you use to allow the social networking sites and blogs and forum to perform their purpose.
And wait, there's two of them? There's only one tool between the social networking sites and blogs and forum, so why are you using more than on in the analogy?
Oh, because it's fucked up that's why.
Then you go on to put words in my mouth.
No, I'm saying something with a vague definition will have overlapping themes with things of similar purpose which will often have certain aspects fall into multiple categories because of the vagueness.
Depends on how you want to look at it. A lot of the aspects are indeed like a thread in a forum. Take an e-mail for example. You could have it set-up to send between multiple recipients who take turns posting about the particular set-up at hand. And just like with a thread on a forum, there could only be two people communicating with each other. It would be akin to a pm on a forum which is basically just a private thread between two people.
IRC and messengers could indeed be equated in the same manner. Of course you could arque because they don't use a browser and webpages they could easily be separated through that or not. Of course this would be a physical feature of separation and not by means of "purpose".

Hence "along the lines of" and not "you used often." Though the article you posted which you said says what you mean does use often if you want to get uppity about it.

Boats are meant for water and cars are meant for land.
It's about the same as the separation between internet and snail mail.
But thanks for trying.

The nail or screw itself would be the social networking sites and blogs and forums.I kept that vague for a reason. The purpose of putting a nail or screw into something to hold it to another is akin to communicating over the internet. There was no deeper meaning to that part.
But ignoring all that, let me try to boil down your argument to a single point:
Two things that have very similar purposes are very hard to distinguish. Is this it?

Nope, they both take you from one place to another, so by your definition a boat is a car.

Awesome, that means my feet really are cars as they travel on land just like a car. It also means they are boats as they can propel me through water. I'm fucking amazing.
