Funny little detail about Magellan:
His name came from the explorer that has travelled around the world, Ferdinand Magellan. He died in Mactan, on the island of the Philippines by the hands of Lapu-Lapu.
I don't think that's exactly meant to be subtle or anything. Magellan is a world-famous name associated with the sea. Same as Blackbeard, obviously named after the real pirate and with the same real name, Edward Teach. There was also a real Golden Age of Piracy and that's when Blackbeard was around. Also, less famously than those two, there was a real pirate called François l'Olonnais, hia last name being written in Japanese as ãƒãƒãƒŽã‚¢ or Roronoa. "Axehand" Morgan shares a name with Henry Morgan, a privateer. And talking of that, the Shichibukai are basically Privateers; legalised pirates working for a navy.
It's nice that for all its wackiness and fantasy, Oda has linked One Piece to real pirating history in various ways. There are some other nice name puns, like Usopp being a mix of "Uso" (to lie) and "Aesop" (the famous storyteller).
