There is this one place(café) that I love and I always leave a tip, but otherwise I only tip on occasion, like if their service is really good or something.

I do it when I feel that the person deserved it, it doesn't take much to smile and be polite.
But I know that in France there is a legislation where the tip is included in the bill so you pay anyway, and people don't tip much anymore.

I value good service and courtesy.

no tips for a self-service eatery or an order at the counter eatery where you pick up your own meals and anywhere from 10 - 20% tip depending on what kind of restaurant i'm eating at.

depending on what kind of restaurantYou ever eat at a restaurant that forces the tip out of you, you know, where they already calculate the tip you're going to pay and include it into the price? Great way to know which restaurants to not eat at again.

I've never been to a place like that, and i'm sure i'd never go again if they ever pulled something that ballzy.

twice i been to a place like that where the server tried to get more by making a scene. first time i just ignored it. second time i spoke up. server said loudly and sarcasticly, "thanks for the tip!", i turned and said "first, the tip's included in the bill, and second the service was shit". she turned red and almost ran for the kitchen.

in the words of mr.pink, if you don't like it, "learn to fucking type". in other words get a better skill set.

I always tip, usually more than expected if the service is even average. I'm pretty stingy with most things but something about tipping brings out my generous side.
There have been times where I didn't have enough money to tip though, and had to leave crap like $1. I feel really terrible when that happens, even though it's out of my control. Not like I can run home, dig under the couch cushions and piles of paper on the counter to find a handful of change and run back.

I will give a base of 3 dollars to 15%(depending on which is higher) if service is prompt and good it's more. I remember giving a pizza guy a 20 dollar tip for getting my pizza to me early one time. They said it would be an hour(metro area on sat night) it took 30 minutes. generally I normally leave 5-6 bucks, for decent service.
But I know a guy has an ass load of money, doesn't matter he always leaves a 20 dollar tip.
