I've been to a few for about 3-4 years now. Before then, I didn't know there was a convention within my general area, and before that, I didn't even know anime conventions existed.
In my experience......
It's like being in a heavenly place separate from the harshness of the real world and a wide awake nightmare at the same time.
At anime conventions, you spend time with like minded people, get to know each other, meet new friends, buy some cool stuff (or sell some cool stuff), and I'm sure you'll laugh from all the randomness that happens. It's really the only 3 days I actually look forward to out of a year. : )
On the other hand, there are things you'll see at an anime convention (man-misty) that you'll wish you never wanted to see, and you might try to scrape your eyes out. Also, anime conventions are fun, but it's even more fun if you're spending it with at least one person, if you find yourself alone, it gets a little depressing, especially when it gets late and a lot of people have left for the night. : (
Though when you compare the pros and the cons, anime conventions are made of win and awesome. : )
I think anyone who hasn't gone to one yet, should go to the one closest to them.

Staffed at Anime Weekend Atlanta from the first one till the 12th. Staffed at DragonCon from the 8th till 10th, Staffed at Anime Central from the 4th till the 6th. and Staffed Fanime once during 2008. I mainly work the video rooms (Anime Rooms) and in video archive (taking pictures), I staffed some cons in the RPG Rooms. I've quite staffing cons due to health issues and age, but I still attend cons, just less now because paying for them is painful these days, and I've become disenchanted with most conventions as many sell out to major companies and just become a giant billboard disguised as a anime convention, showing stuff only their sponsor company puts out or has the exclusive license to. I miss the old days..

I'd love to go to one, but I haven't gotten to go to a 'real' one. I've gone to showings, or speeches of various people that events were built around, but nothing big enough to be called a convention. The only notable anime events was the creator of Gundam giving a speech and getting to do some cell coloring, as my sempai told me.
Though I've made some friends out here in St Louis who want to take me to conventions (Anime StL and Comicon next time 'round). I didn't get to go prior due to family issues- "too expensive" "too weird", etc. Though now that I don't live with my parents anymore, hope abounds! +_+

In Argentina, Otakus are fools. they have stupid sense of humor and they are noisy. i liked the stuff they sold and some videogames stands. but it's not funny when a guy with a crappy ichigo cosplay shouts while walking next to you " KAWAIIIIIII DATTEBAYOOOOOO" holding a "i touch butts for free" sign

It's sad those are the majority there apparently, though.
