In this instance i would be a sword wielder. sword fighting is an art form, the movements a dance, while the movement is dictated by the steady "clang" of steel on steel.

Any "flare" like sword dance moves or perceptions on what sword-fighting should be like will give others the edge over you when they know how to kill/disarm/injure you in the most efficient manner with the least amount of moves. It's also why sometimes I eschew some of kung-fu's techniques and styles because it really is flashy and it doesn't work out in those wushu/kung-fu movies.

My melee preference really depends on the situation at hand. Lets say if I were to be in some kind of medieval war, I would pick the spear for its superior range. If I was in a duel or some form of competition, the sword would be my choice for its versatility. But if I were to pick a weapon that best fits my personality it would have to be the knife or dagger. The dagger is easy to hide, swift due to its light weight, and can be thrown with relative ease if the situation calls for it.

To throw a knife/dagger, one must take into account the variability of the wind, the weight of the weapon, how much force would it take to have a deep impact, and how far would the throw stand. Also, you have to hold the tip of the blade to ensure that the blade goes through the body and not the handle. Since throwing knives vary from straight, weighted handles and blades to curving forms of the throwing knife...

The mace. Imagine what an impact to someone's head it can make. A satisfying CRACK and brain matter splattering everywhere. Yum.

Also a knife is heaver than lets say an arrow and would take a pretty strong wind to effect it much. The amount of force it takes to kill a person isn't as high as one might think, you just have to hit the right spot like the neck. Theres more than one way to throw a knife, google ballistic knife if you havn't seen one before. The only real problem is if you miss because then you have just given your foe another weapon and disarming yourself in the process.

Weak points i found out when hit by thrown knives were:
In the nape (specific, the medulla oblongata)
The shoulder blades (effective for disarming, i think)
Thighs (mobility is limited due to pain and blood loss)
Head (need I say more?)
And for the distance, its only the range where the throw is most effective. And i got to repeat, the strength is also important as it determines the speed and deepness of impact of that blade because some blades already have the deep impact already built in to that kind of blade but others do not.

If i had to chose between those weapons i would chose the knife because it can be hidden quite effectively and it can be used for a ton of different situations
But if I had other choices I most likely would want trench spikes(brass knuckles with a blade out the side.

To me a weak point is a spot that, if hit or cut, would cause death. ie)the heart, jugular, lungs, brain, spine, and temples. Technically speaking though any wound can be a death blow if it is deep enough.
Leaving distance and effective range aside, I get what your saying, but strength applies to weapons reguardless if you are throwing them or not. Anything short of a gun requires physical strength to be an effective weapon, so I don't really see the problem here. The more momentum you can put behind the weapon the more effective it will be is just a fact, not really an arguement. Basically you can say that strenght is important for every weapon here... I can't argue with a fact zeKer...

Wow with this many people packing knives, I'd just take a large shield. I mean, jeez. The knife is good up close? So is my 4' diameter bronze disc. And I don't think much can be blocked in terms of ranged items with a knife. With a big shield you just see that they throw it and block, or wait for them to get in close and....
BLUDGEON, BLUDGEON, BLUDGEON

Now thats a good idea. But if a knife user gets too close to you, lets say in your back, well then you dont have even a slight nanosecond to turn and block at the blade being stabbed in your back. The closest thing between a knife and a sword would be in the machete family such as the Gladius, a shortened Xiphos or if you prefer the crescent sickle for close hooking and some tridents wouldnt hurt though....

Well, if someone snuck up on you I don't think it matter what they're using, lol. Though I do like the shorter swords, like those the Roman Legionnaires used. A sword designed for deeps stabs and to be used in conjunction with a shield.

Yeah and you would be like a single anti riot squad member, only with a blade and not some batons to hit you.

Well, do I have tear gas? Or, more importantly, a gas mask so I don't bone myself with my own defensive measure?
"Pop the gas! Hahaha-" *hack, cough, etc*

Tear gas is designed to irritate your eyes and to choke you while flashbangs are meant to disorient you with a blinding flash and a deafening bang. in conjunction with using a blade, well its damn effective. Or simply in ancient times, agile knife holders used greek fire bombs (you think that the navy had those? think again...) to either stop an entire phalanx spear formation or disorient them while several of those, um, 'skilleteers(?)' finish you off while you are still burning with greek fire...

I prefer a katar or a short leaf-shaped dagger (something like gladius but shorter), since i prefer a surprise attack that guaranteed to kill. Katar done the job well but it's practically useless on a fair fight.
Actually i'm gonna say a claymore / zweihander but i lack the strength to use it effectively.

I prefer none of those. As someone who is actually trained in the arts of combat and is aware of most pressure points on the human body, I would go with dual Katars. The speed and ease at which they are used when combined with their light weight and the fact they are simply a very deadly extension to your own fists, makes them a very lethal weapon.
