Tried the classic roman style combat with a gladius and ended up not dealing a single hit but repulsed every strike by his chain or with the sickle using the shield. Seriously, kusarigama users tend to be VERY FAST... And deadly... So thats why the japanese feudal warlords (or were they called daimyos) employed shinobi at their shadows...

I would prefer something that utilizes two hands, although dual wielding looks fun and highly deadly in the right hands, I'm not those hands.
My weapon of choice would be either using my fists (Something equipped to them maybe) or a staff.
Why the staff?
My reasoning - It utilizes both hands when in combat, giving the staff particularly swift strikes... at the same can pull back fast enough to parry oncoming strikes from bladed weapons.
Another reason is that it allows the wielder some good mobility that rivals even those swift enough to use a dagger.
The defensive capabilities are often under estimated.. many slashing weapons (Particularly swords) can be deflected by simply turning the center of the staff towards the weapon, and if the person is trying to hit the hands they'll quickly see the other end of the staff aiming at something vital.
Of course.. anything that primarily used to pierce (say.. daggers or spears) will have a easier time then someone doing horizontal/vertical strikes.

I managed to win with a strategy I put a lot of thought into after talking about it on here, try why I did. Get some arm guards to protect your forearms, and use a spear. Just toy around with him til he gets the chain wrapped around the polearm really well, but not you. Jab it into the ground and rush in for hand to hand combat while he's stuck with limited mobility and disarm him.

The only armor i wear is:
HEAD
- Spartan Hoplite (helmets like in 300)
BODY
- Marauder's vest
ARMS
- A pair of bracers
TORSO
- Knight's leg armor padding
LEGS
- none
I suck at spears though i fare better with a naginata. Yesterday I used a trident, a medium sized aegis for a shield and carried a back-up blade (in this case, i carried a falchion) since i cant carry my nodachi because although i got longer cutting range, the chain would either bind my sword or tie my hand to the sword's handle. I must say so myself that a trident is cool because it can roll up the chain like a spaghetti strand in a fork, but big problem is once the chain is caught, you either gotta discard the trident or keep fighting with the chain curled up in the fork.

Uh you know, the coup de grace means 'STROKE OF GRACE'... It means any kind of finishing blow you inflict. For example your enemy is so weakened that you stab his heart as one final blow that ends him dead....

Seriously.... ANY single blow that will kill an opponent in his weakened state (such as too injured to even heal or fight) or like this:
You and your opponent fight, he loses, gets gravely injured, asks you a finishing blow, you strike him, he dies.
THATS a coup de grace...

Umm I'll go with a knife since it's easy to hide. In a frontal attack it has a huge disadvantage in reach but it's easier to retract and allows more room for maneuvers...
