Hey... I'd like to mention, my favorite jap weapon is Nodaichi for all aspect.I thought about lately, I can use its bend and dull side for better parrying and saving the sharpness.
i thought i was the only one who liked bringing that big blade... seriously though its heavy, it can cut damn well too... drawback is you dont have mobility when fighting indoors...
for those who like double sword combat, i'd say twin kodachis should do it... they're light and easy to swing... but ya must learn to syncopate your arms and wrists....

That's the truth there. As much as I like the nodachi, I would prefer the katana.
As for double-sword combat, reminds me of Shinomori Aoshi from Rurouni Kenshin.

If I had to choose a melee weapon, I would go with dual tomahawks. I can use them for just fighting, or I can use one as a projectile and still have one. It's a very versatile tool. Short enough that one can be nimble with it, but enough weight and an edge to do damage, not to mention the added range one can get by tossing it, although really... You can turn anything you want into a projectile...
Lol.

Swords, Spears, Forks and Daggers are the only Melee Weapons that has ever sparked an interest in me. If given the choice, I would carry each of them simultaneously since the four basically covers each flaws.
The Sword and the Dagger covers the Fork and Spears mobility of wielding while the Fork and Spear covers the Sword and Daggers lack of covering a good, long striking distace.
Anything belonging to the hammer family isn't really suited for me. Plus, it sucks when you're about to smite the enemy, you already have 4-5 daggers stuck in your chest

true... you can but you limit your combat mobility though....
ah yes... the fork weapons... i remember two of such weapons, the trident and the pitchfork... fishermen used the trident for spear fishing, and turns out that it was a very effective improvised spear... so did the farmers learn of the fork weapons by the pitchfork... originally the pitchfork was used for clearing and moving those annoying bales of hay... when marauders/raiders attacked, the villagers would often use the pitchforks against the invading outsiders...
for the katana, well its good points are its cutting prowess, sleek and unique design (as swords sometimes were based from the knight's arming sword), very long hours of forging and the steel used (they used a mixture of light materials to form the blade itself... cool huh?)... the thing of the katana is that it ABSORBS a bit of moisture, such that when overly used, the blade may lose its cutting power against a body so utmost care is required if you have one. it is also touch sensitive, as your fingers leave prints that may form molds or something might happen to the blade... plus you have let it 'breathe' once in a while....
@g-money: well Aoshi IS a master of the 'twin dancing swords' technique... and any light blade can do... it can vary... tried these combinations myself:
twin kodachi
-still learning these light swords. its not the same as two katanas or wakizashis
twin gladius (BAD IDEA)
-its too freakin short! its better when you have the rectangle shield
katana and kodachi
-used the kodachi as the defensive blade and struck with the katana
but in the end i was the one who got bruises and cuts....

Personally, my preferance would be the option to have every single one of them avaliable on demand, but seeing as that isn't really a reasonable answer.
I'd prefer any of the weapons in conjunction with a nice, large shield With the shield, I would have a long spear of reasonable length and of sturdy construction to poke at people. A backup would be a short sword that would be usable when I am unable to use my spear. A knife would be another backup that would be a very last resort. I would be armored to the best of my ability, full-plate if able, but I would probably fare well with just bracers and etcetera, seeing as I already have the shield. As the saying goes, "...Of course the Emperor protects! It’s just that He protects me better when I’m in a full carapace suit."
Mind you, if we're talking about the modern era where no one sane carries around a shield and full plate, I'd just go right for the knife since it's bloody illegal to carry around any blade over five inches long. Not that it matters since no one would be so heavily protected as to render such a blade useless....
Of course, if I were inclined to intimidate then maim, a nice, rusty hatchet and a serene smile would do just fine. The blade of a sword or knife is beautiful in it's construction, but nothing brings about terror like a big, bloody axe.

There was a very experimental set of bows that didn't require the archer to carry a sword as two blades were studded into the bow itself. Talk about versatility.
Ah yes, the tomahawk. Brings back the days when marauding native americans attacked caravans, scalped heads and threw the hammer-like weapon. The tomahawk is so light you can throw it towards your target.
Try fighting with only a small buckler shield and a long spear (pike that is)

Uh, your body as a weapon. Better than providing yourself weapons. C'mon! Kick him in the balls! Or, how about a knuckle sandwich for everyone? Like Jet Li and others do when unarmed. ^^

The body is the most ultimate weapon... Some martial arts utilize that potential...
Some like the 5 form kung fu/drunken fist of Jackie Chan, the Jeet Kune Do of Bruce Lee and his mentor, Muay Thai of Tony Jaa and the fighting style of Jet Li (sorry but i completely dont know about his fighting style but i believe he's using the monkey fist technique explaining his monkey like moves)

Yes, but you must admit that the flesh of man is weak. The steel and iron of machine will triumph over britle bones and squishy flesh any day. Err... what I mean is that if you're going to get into a squabble, why not arm yourself. Sure, you won't always have a handy implament to cram into your enemy's cranium, and it is always useful to know how to actually punch a dude, but if you have a knife, why not use it (unless you don't know how to exactly, and you're more liable to cut yourself than do any significant damage to your opponent)?

Reminded me of the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.

Hrmm... I'm not particularly strong or fast so I guess a spear would suit me. Personally I think that I'm more of a bow and arrows type of person... If I could avoid combat then I would. If you were running towards me I could just shoot an arrow and end your life. If you had heavy armor that my arrows couldn't pierce through then I could just run away from you since armor is very bulky and heavy. With a spear... If I could actually wield one then it shouldn't be that hard to back pedal and keep people at a distance since a spear isn't that heavy at all.

There are many types of armor, them being classed into the following according to their use in what i know:
LIGHT ARMOR
-most favored among scouts as they can move fast without sacrificing protection
-used by archers when fighting at vantage points because there is no need for melee
-weak against metal tipped arrows
-only covers the most vital of organs and less in the exposed areas (such as arms)
STANDARD ARMOR
-most footsoldiers use this type as it is average against swords, arrows but weak against heavy weapons such as battleaxes or hammers
-can sustain damage up to it being ripped open
- covers the the entire torso without sacrificing mobility and protection
HEAVY ARMOR
-used by the elite soldiers because of their protection in battle but regrets the cumbersome weight that slows the elite down
-good against swords, arrows and heavy weapons
-sacrifices mobility for protection
-rumors say that it can withstand an early cannon blast at the cost of the armor breaking apart
and the big question is that when you are wielding the spear and an opponent with a close range blade, lets say a knife and attempts to stab the shit out of you... what will you do?

Throw the spear and run like a chicken. Eheheheheh.
Hope spear-users know some counter measures for those situations. ^^
But for me, body is the best!

As a person weilding a shield, spear, and heavy armor, I would scoff at his feable attempt at retaliation and Gut him with my spear. If he is able to get past my spear and into my range, I use my shield to bash him repeatedly. If I really have to, I would drop my spear and take out my secondary short sword, or if I didn't have that, punch him in the face with a gauntleted fist.
