Depending where you live (country wise) you have to be careful which site to get the torrent file from AND the torrent program. For most places the best thing to do is to use uTorrent and turn off "DHT", "Local Peer Discovery" and "Peer Exchange". Those options let you find more seeders but runs the risk of "leaking" your ip to places you dont want.
As for the website you get it from, try not to get it from dodgy websites, not naming any. Go for the ones that dont get pinged by your online antivirus or have a lot of popups. Usually the websites that have humongous amount of popups are a cause for concern.
To those anime leechers there is nothing to worry about getting letters or phone calls as long as you get it from popular sites (eg Tokyotosho and Nyaa torrents)
To those gaming leechers watch the website and date of the torrent. And make sure your up to date with what's going around with public torrent sites (a certain "bay" shall i say was PEWPEWLASABEEMED by the FBI and american copyright agency some time ago and subsequently the founders where charged)
To those much like TWOFISH you're fine and keep on doing what you do best
To those mainstream popular TV series leechers depending where you live, no one cares. In US think they aren't really that stingy on torrents.
To those like AVI obviously don't download porn or P2P anything from Universities. You can direct download and game, but don't torrent or you'll get destroyed like AVI D:
nonetheless for a reliable torrent program go for UTorrent or FreeDownLoad Manager or BitComet
