What caused Gundam SEED Destiny to fail?

This series was a let down and failed miserably as a Gundam title.
If anyone has anything to add either supporting or going against this series. Discuss.

Watched some few episodes of some of the few Gundam series and I never been a fan of this Oh so powerful and agile giant mechs that no matter how much fire power you blast at it you can't hit it. The mechs looks cool tough.

Similar reasons to why most money-milking Sunrise sequels are vastly inferior to the first series.
1) Spamming characters. There was enough new and (somewhat) promising characters around to manage those 50 eps on their own but the more the series re-focused on the old cast the more the new was left undeveloped and shallow.
2) Managing the cast. The initial concept showed promise, I'll give it that. A young pilot with a fuckload of potential and an "old", top-dog he looks up to (sort of a mentor figure as I saw it) surrounded by a fun bunch of secondary characters. The thing is that Shinn remained an undeveloped whiny bitch for the whole series and Athrun lost all his confidence and motivation he gained throughout Seed. And that's still nothing compared to how they butchered Cagalli's character and it's previous development. The rest of the old cast was left completely unchanged and spent most of their screentime patiently doing nothing. Like monuments or something. Also the more the show progressed, the less clear it was who the main characters were.
3) Repetitiveness. The whole initial premise of Destiny was Seed done backwards for fucks sake - new mobile suits get developed in secrecy, the other side sends a commando with young pilots to steal them, a prototype battleship gets thrown into the chase with a young ace and the sole remaining suit on board. Only this time they're doing the chasing ...
Not to mention they reused a good amount of fighting animations, flashbacks and basically re-wrote Seed's ending.
I can easily go on if this topic gets feedback.

Aside from the story is just a copy edit from Z Gundam, and most people has already spoke their mind about the Story, plot and Chara development.
I'll talk about the mobile suits. :)
Instead of thinking a new one, they decided to "recycle" almost all of the Older mobile suits.
Z.A.K.U -Instant rip-off from the one year war series
Chaos, Gaia, Abyss - Recycled Version of Calamity, Raider, Forbidden
Legend -Instant recycle from Providence
DOM Trooper -Instant Rip-off from the one year war series
Destroy -Rip off from Big Zam
Gouf "Ignited - Instant Rip off from the one year wars series
I think that's all for now.

Destroy -Rip off from Big ZamYou also forgot about the Psycho Gundam.
lol, yeah, the "inner part" of Destroy. But I think the resemblance to Psycho Gundam is just limited to the story, there's no "striking" resemblance with the "Gundam part" of Destroy with Pshyco gundam. But the mobile armor part of the Destroy resembles Big Zam.
:)

I also forgot to add the ridiculous amounts of clip shows throughout. I mean, there was like about 4 total which is unnecessary. And like Bentoss mentioned, there's too many recycled scenes.

mine's because shin "killed" Freedom.
and the rest of them are rip off from one year war and zeta.
wich reminds me at the beginning the omni steals zaft MS wich very similar to the previous SEED.

All I did to enjoy GSD was to just skip all dialogue and watch fight scenes. The story was crap and all I cared about were the fights. The flashbacks were also annoying as heck.

It failed because:
- Shinn sucked
- The story Sucked
- The characters sucked
- The Gundams sucked
- The mobile suits sucked
- The soundtrack sucked

I must agree with KLoWns Shinn sucked statement. One of my most hated characters. It was also a bit random when everybody flew around and didn't know who to shoot, so everybody shot everybody insted -_-'
But yea, mainly it sucked beacuse of Shinn. He just whined all the time, and I don't think he did a good thing once through the whole serie.
Destiny wasn't nearly as epic as the first.

When u put a supposed to be omnipotent character together with a suck char (Shinn)... with addition of it being second season...... That will happen....

Yeah, definitely agreed with the reactions on Shinn. Well, compared to Kira he's a total n00b when it comes to war, and his state of mind was already questionable (and is predictable). And, after what happened in SEED, nothing much changed for everyone else. And the misplaced drama in some parts (like Shinn "blindly" loving Stella despite having a sadistic split personality) kinda made it a bit too dramatic.

Yeah... That Pretty Much Sums It Up. Everything Plainly Sucked.

Hmm...thinks....
On my part alot of rip off on other anime, gundam scenes and game scenes are partly the 'cause of fail...but then again as this man speaks on my be-half.

That sums it all up. Well, pretty much it was a victim of the "Pressure To Do An Awesome Sequel From A Good Anime Series".
Well, but I have to digress on the most important reason. I emphasize it: Shinn sucked. Have a whiner for a poster boy and you'll go down in flames.

- The soundtrack suckedThe one thing I would disagree upon.
The soundtrack was nowhere near groundbreaking, nor that much different from Seed's J-popness but I still found it solid and fitting. Some of those OP/ED and insert songs (Pride, Shinkai no Kodoku ...) still roam my playlists.

I had no problems with the OP's and ED's (except the last OP, which was fuckin horrible), im talking about the stuff that played during the show.
The 2nd and 3rd OP was really good if i remember it right.
