What caused Gundam SEED Destiny to fail?

Ep 50 wasn't even an episode or an "epic" battle. Just another useless waste of 24 minutes. I watched it and went "WTF?!" Alight so Final Plus was extended but it still sucked. There was still nothing but beam spamming and the useless conclusion.

you know this anime is fail once they switch new main character to old main character (Shin-->Kira) >_>
The one thing I would disagree upon.
The soundtrack was nowhere near groundbreaking, nor that much different from Seed's J-popness but I still found it solid and fitting. Some of those OP/ED and insert songs (Pride, Shinkai no Kodoku ...) still roam my playlists.
^Agreed

They gave in to the fangirl's craving for more Kira and Athrun and the ridiculous amounts of plot armor. Shinn -> Kira = FAIL

Destiny was so bad it ruined SEED. Kira was a great character, until Destiny. They took away everything that made Kira a good character. SEED is great series but Destiny ruined the name of that particular franchise. They didn't need to make a second season of SEED the first was essentially perfect. The ruined pretty much all of the returning characters and made the new ones horrible. There are many other things but I'm not willing to waste half an hour typing about how a bunch of people fucked something great up. I just pretend Destiny never existed. I still enjoy SEED but watching it just really pisses me off because I start to think, "How could they turn something so good into pure garbage?" Which lead me to pretend it never existed, and now I can enjoy SEED without getting pissed. Although I'm pissed now cause I just started thinking about it again.

I wouldn't mind a SEED sequel but I would want something more new. Not a repetition of SEED's ending. Stargazer was 10 times better than every Destiny episode though it sucked that it was only 2 eps running 15 minutes each. Stargazer should have been the sequel. It's storyline was more interesting and exciting to watch.

I'm bumping.
Seems like a lot of people hate Shinn though I wouldn't totally agree with that. I actually like Shinn better than Kira. The only reason why his character isn't "finished" because like I said before, they abandoned him for the old protagonist. Look at Zeta Gundam, Kamille Bidan was the equivalent to Shinn, a new main character in a sequel series with Char as Kamille's mentor as Athrun was to Shinn's. In Zeta, Amuro Ray, the old hero from Mobile Suit Gundam, made some reappearances in Zeta but it was clear that he was a support character and that the main character spotlight will only shine on Kamille. In Destiny, Shinn and Kira kept switching back and forth. If ZAFT fought the Earth forces, then Shinn is the hero, but against ORB or the Archangel and friends, he was automatically made into the villain. The competition for the main character role is unneeded. Even their fights were rather pathetic. In Zeta, Kamille actually had trouble fighting his enemies even in the the destructive Zeta Gundam, more realistic. Destiny Gundam's fights were rather lame. I mean come on, destroying not one but at least three Destroys without even a single scratch is stupid.

Shinn was the main character in Seed Destiny but then when Kira shows up he was just pushed to the side and made into a character that was just there for no particular reason but to just pilot like any other Zakus.

ok so i get you guys GSD was a total flop but i have to say that i enjoyed it all. i have to agree that shinn was and still is a poor excuse of a character who cant make up his mind and has a poor lack of judgement, and as for the suits them selves i love the strike freedom mainly cause of the name 'freedom' and one who fights 4 freedom can never be brought down.
overall yeah the GSD was a failure but i enjoyed it all and is a part of my vast collection of dvds so in my opinion out of my raiting system i give it a 3 out of 5.

There is certainly one aspect of Gundam Seed Destiny that did not fail: appealing to both fanboys and fangirls. The girls get to see more of their favourite male pilots such as Kira and Athrun.
As for the fanboys, just take a look at any hentai site. There are countless nekkid pics of the female characters, not to mention the hentai doujins. :D
The hardcore Gundam fan may feel that Gundam Seed Destiny did not live up to expectations, but the casual viewer may think otherwise.

Saying it's good cause of eye candy. I don't think it's about being a hardcore Gundam fan or anything to the extreme, but I believe anyone can tell that the story went downhill and degraded to pure non-sense at the end. Sure, Luna is sexy with her unregulated mini skirt as a red uniformed pilot, I got no problem with that for enjoy reading doujins on her as well. But I feel that a series with so much potential got wasted for the purpose of appeasing the fan base and giving them what they want. To be honest, this direction they took was a disappointment.

and the mobile suits weren't really original were they?
Hyaku Shiki = Akatsuki
Hi-Nu = Strike Freedom
i cant seem to find one for Justice though

Sunrise has another series that falls into the category that Gundam SEED does where they’ve just milked it to the point of it being incomprehensible. They did a series in the early †˜90s called Future GPX Cyber Formula. A lot of the characters that voiced the characters in this series went to do Gundam SEED. The series is about futuristic Formula 1 racing that uses racing cars with advanced technology, such as them being able to change shape for aerodynamics. There’s five series of it and the first is a long 37 episode TV series while the remainder four series are shorter OVAs. The idea of the series was a potential good money maker, as in the early 90’s Japan received a really large Formula One boom and it was assumed that a anime series based on Formula One racing would possibly make a lot of money. Cyber Formula was created literally on a whim without coming from a manga or novel. The TV series and a few subsequent OVAs are not bad, but as the series goes on and gets towards the end it just starts to become ridiculous. In the beginning of the series there’s a lot of rivalry between characters and drama, but by the time the third OVA series comes you are left with feelings of why some of the characters behave the way they do. You’ll understand that they are racing one another, but all the drama and character development suddenly just drops and the whole series takes a drastic turn.
My take on why it likely happened is the original series really didn’t have much to do with Formula One at all. Sunrise, noticing this, began to change the series to focus more on political and technical aspects seen in Formula One racing at the time. The shift becomes apparent right after the second OVA series, where before the cars were very unique but they start to become similar and there is more of a focus just on the races themselves rather than the participants involved. Also the rivalry between the main character and his †˜rival’ just drops and more people are brought in, but their developments become very different than the prior characters in that there is more of a focus on a story that pretty much had no relevance to the one at hand.
Plus finally, there is at times a sense of whom is the series supposed to appeal to? Most all the drivers are handsome young males, so you may initially think designs done for fangirls, but it has a more of that Gundam sense of fanboy-ish progression to it. Plus I don’t think at the time there was a large deal of female Formula One racing fans, so it should be a series for fanboys.

It failed because it never made any damn sense.
^Either than the fact that a lot of things that was in it sucked.

IMO it failed because it was draggy in some parts and at some parts makes no sense at all.I ended up skipping most of the dialogue and just watched the action scenes. The casual viewer would have done the same cause my non-anime friend ended up asking me a heck alot of questions
They should have just killed off half of the cast and make it a free for all in space or something lol.

In my opinion, destiny is just like a fanservice series to please and give fans eye-candy. I wouldn't mind and enjoyed that, but God...the story went downhill; the development of character and plot is being meh. Also Kira hijack Shinn's position as main character, thus render Shinn and series to hellhole.
