Gundam has become a big thing because people expect hard MS-on-MS action but also a good story and drama. If it's all story or all action, it's not going to live up to the standards of Gundam. Even G Gundam had a good story.

Well in a way yeah after they seen a few episodes, but still the inital draw factor is seeing some new looking mecha in action against cannon fodder or a new looking mecha.
I cant say much since I have only watched Wing gundam(proper name?),gundam seed and destiny.

While the draw in is mainly focused on Gundams and other mobile suits, the story does also play as an attention grabber to say first time audiences. Story should be taken seriously and not neglected for that's not how any series run. However, SEED Destiny is one exception. The story died on the second half of the series, and things just didn't make sense anymore. So when you say people only watch it for the Gundams fights in Destiny, then you're correct cause that's what the series ran on at the end.

OT: No real opinion really. Everything has been said already. Though never liked GS or GSD.

Cheeziness and Too much story dragging. also the gundams are very much overpowered.
Strike freedom has all the the kick ass accessories and it left me an impression this weapon is cool i want install it in my suit!. while Justice has very much laser blades on every part of its body i hate the part where it destroys the destiny gundam with one kick. And the battle scenes are just played over and over again. different targets but same action and scene.

Blame Morosawa, the wife of the GSD director for being a crap since she is the one who writes the script. She makes Shinn to be lame because she hates him and Cagalli to be useless because she has dispute with the seiyuu for cagalli, and the rest of the list goes on....

I think SEED Destiny failed because of a lack of good character development, plus the fact that the story borrows so many elements from First Gundam and Zeta. My least favorite element of the whole show was Shinn's relationship with Stellar, and my reason for hating it is simple - I watched Zeta Gundam. Personally, I think that all of the SEED series and manga (with the exception of Stargazer) were horrible. It's series like SEED that help ensure that I'll be biased towards UC series for the rest of my life.
