What caused Gundam SEED Destiny to fail?

I did enjoy watching the Impulse transformation for a while. And more than that, Lacus Clyne made SEED worth watching. Yeah I am a Lacus fan.

Basically it was bad because it felt like Gundam SEED 1.5. I know this point has already been reiterated but the formula felt so much the same and repetitive.

Lacus is okay i guess...more of a meyrin/stellar fan

Three reasons:
1. Wasted potential
As has been said before, Shinn went from being the main character to a bland enemy. If the series had stuck with Shinn, and left Kira as a side character, it would have been a lot better. Also, Phantom Pain was essentially forgotten, including Stella and her relationship with Shinn, which could have been so much more than it was.
2. Blurring the line between "homage" and "ripoff"
Maybe having ZAFT create their own Zakus and Goufs is a way of paying homage to the original Gundam. Maybe it's an unwillingness to do work and come up with new designs. Maybe having Shinn and Stella parallel Kamille and Four is an home to Zeta Gundam. Maybe it's lazy writing meant to take up a couple of episodes. Maybe having suits stolen in the beginning is paralleling SEED. Maybe it's not knowing how to start a new series.
3. Bad writing, direction, that sort of thing
So many examples have already been given in this thread. Character's actions don't always make sense, fights aren't that interesting, and so many flashbacks (not just flashback episodes either; every episode of the series had at least one scene flashing back to a previous episode, and sometimes even earlier in the same episode) that over 10% of the series is reused footage. That's over 100 minutes of nothing new.

I honestly don't really mind GSD. There were some characters that I loved seeing return to the battlefield and as far as I'm concerned Kira and Athrun were awesome. I was pumping my hands in the air when Kira and the Freedom were re-united and especially when he grabbed Cagalli.
Shinn and Meer are the only ones I really can't stand. Shinn cannot think one iota for himself and simply follows along with everyone else. He is nothing more than chairman durandal's pet mobile suit pilot as athrun put it when he was escaping with Mayrin. I do wish they had played out the attraction between Athrun and Mayrin if there even was one. I do agree with people that they just recycled or reversed some things. I mean in the original GS it was Zaft who stole mobile suits from the Alliance and now in GSD its the reverse with the Alliance stealing mobile suits from Zaft. I also know they borrowed the Destroy Gundam from somewhere I just cant remember which one. I think its 00 Gundam but im not sure.
As far as meer goes I can't stand her. There is only ONE Lacus Clyne and I after I watched the series the first time through I fast forwarded through her scenes every time after that except for the episode where she got killed. I watched that one with a big grin on my face. I would've liked her more if she had actually acted like Lacus but she failed the second I saw her singing pop song versions of Lacus's songs and even more so when she slipped in bed with Athrun although seeing her in that furry nightie thing was a definite plus ALTHOUGH Lacus is certainly much hotter and if you cant tell the difference you are an EPIC FAIL.

cause when ever i see gundam i see robots on the right mobile suits on the left and metals in the front

the fact that emo Shinn was replaced half way in the series by Kira was one indicator.
also, the OMGWTF IMBA ROBOT Strike Freedom just killing everything without lifting a finger, literally the dragoon system seems capable of doing everything was another reason
lastly, the plot and even the ending was similar to Gundam Seed.....

meh strike freedom was loaded with the latest of aim bot,map hacks and invulnerability bugs to his gundam OS.
If only the enemies could have done the same.

The new characters were all incredibly annoying along with the events.
1. When Stella dies were supposed to feel sorry for bitch after she has wiped out half of Europe for no reason
2. Lunamaria finds out Shin (For what they know) has killed her sister and instead of trying to kill him they become a couple
3. Every time Shin was close to being a likeable character he would do something so painfully annoying that I was wishing for the moron to be killed off.
In its defence though Athrun's story was pretty good and Meer's story was not that bad.

I like to add a couple of questions to this:
As to what transpired, do you honestly think that bringing Kira back along with giving him such a bullshit hax Gundam, completely untouchable to an unrealistic scale, made GSD better excluding the fan service?
Then what of the introduction of the Minerva crew? What was their purpose? Why bother even waste time give them such a half ass development when they'll just be thrown away at the end?
Mu's death in SEED, how did this affect his thunder and epic sacrifice in SEED when he came back in Destiny?
What the fuck is the Destiny plan? The explanation was given like what? Two minutes? Hardly enough time to give us a lay out to how "evil" it was if it was labeled so by Kira's band of friends.
Clip shows / constant flashbacks, what relevance to they have? What's the point of having a sequel when half of the time we get flashbacks over and over?
Destroy Gundams, useless cannon fodder MS of destruction huh?

It made even less sense than the Ramba Ral clone coming back to life. They showed his helmet floating in space after he blocked the shot! He died! And I actually cried when it happened, because he was the best and most likable in SEED. Destiny shit all over that. I don't even like Mu anymore, because he's not the same guy.

The ending of Destiny felt very rushed. No great fights, no explanation of what was really going on - just a bunch of shit laid out so that it didn't feel like a half-finished series. And that really sucks because so much time was spent flashing back to previous events. Why wasn't that time spent more productively? It's one thing to stretch a story that could be told in 40 episodes to 50, and another to throw flashback episodes in and shrink the story so that not everything is explained.

Destroy Gundams, useless cannon fodder MS of destruction huh? When the Destroy first showed up, it was very impressive. But then it became a mass-produced thing, and it was became, "So what?" Part of the reason the Big Zam was so impressive and frightening was the fact that only one appeared, and it required a sacrifice of someone's life to be destroyed. Even the Psycho Gundam need a lot of fucking effort to be destroyed. Destiny should have remembered that.

One thing that didn't help was that the lead writer *The bitch that has cancer, forgot her name* hated the original VA cast for Destiny and decided that seeing how she didn't like them *The cast pointed out flaws in her writing* she would replace the cast with the SEED cast. Because of that so we never did get to see the foreshadowed story that was originally going to happen with Kira being responsible for killing Shinn's parents *The Strike was the only Mobile Suit that had the shot seeing how the Calamity was above the area and the Strike was aiming right down at it*. All so Kira somehow surviving the Strike being Blown up has to be one of the worst moments ever. I SHUT DOWN THE REACTOR! is not a valid excuse for the suit blowing up and having a sword shoved through the cockpit.

Although I agree that GSD in general was fail, I did like a few parts of the opening episodes.
I'll be the first to admit that Minerva was literally a direct Archangel ripoff, but the pacing of the first several episodes had a nice feel to it. Something about Dullindal in the early episodes (before he was revealed blatantly as the mastermind) SCREAMED conspiracy. There was a good political buildup in GSD that was lacking in the original GS, since GS was simply Kira's story. GSD actually took a look at the world at large, with the power play between Orb, ZAFT, and the Earth Alliance.
That being said, the series went down the drain very, very fast.

The best part of GSD was the very beginning where we got to see the three druggies kick sum ass, and the other nubs getting blown up.

I only watched a couple episodes, but I stopped watching because I missed the drama with the crazy red head from the first season. I'm not that big on mecha to begin with.

Err the title has freaking gundam in it,if you arent watching it for mechs fighting, there isnt much of a plot nor characters to look out for or look forward too
