I am a musician, and refuse to judge my own work's quality.
Rock runs the gamut. People can happen upon formula (Pink Floyd). Charisma (Jimi Hendrix) usually trumps technical prowess (Herman Li).
Technical prowess isn't worth shit. It doesn't imply good music.
I kinda agree with the formula thing (AC/DC, Kiss and several others come to mind as well), but hey, that not only goes for rock I think. People found something that SELLS and you can find that everywhere.
Wherever there's someone with a successful "pattern", there are also those who want to cash in on that. Not specific to rock, what about that bad MTV hip hop? I don't really see the diversity there and these guys make big bucks with that shit.

Hip Hop can be equally varied, but the greats are built, rather than born. Practice builds mastery, and means the difference between Humpty Hump and "Souja Boy".
I never said Hip Hop isn't varied. I just don't see why that wouldn't apply to rock as well?
Once we have a look at the underground scene, there's so much more to enjoy than the mainstream cash whores. And that goes for all genres IMO, so I don't really get your point... :\
