I listen to a really wide range of genres and a lot of British music, being British. I like general rock and punk as well as alternative rock, but my preferred overarching genre of guitar-based music is metal. I like a bit of death metal, e.g. At the Gates or Venom, and a few thrash metal bands (Slayer, Anvil, Megadeth and the like). I suppose one of the most prominent sub-genres is NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), spearheaded by Saxon, Diamond Head and Iron Maiden. In terms of so-called traditional metal, I adore Black Sabbath and quite like Judas Priest. When it comes to 'heavy' content, I'm really into doom metal, along with some stoner rock/metal and sludge. I'm an advocate of Electric Wizard and a sucker for Cathedral or Saint Vitus. Other metal bands I like include Mastadon, Ozzy Osbourne and a bit of Pantera.
Another genre I'm incredibly into is synth or electronic, particularly the British scene of synth pop and other offshoots. Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Human League, Kim Wilde, Men Without Hats, Heaven 17 and New Order are some of my favourites. I also like a bit of New Wave, like BIlly Idol, and of course the fathers of synth like Joy Division and The Normal. I don't listen to many punk bands, but my favourites are The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, The Clash and Dead Kennedys.
There are tons of other genres I'm into, but I feel that listing a few other bands I like would be a simpler way of getting the point across:
T. Rex, Bauhaus, KISS, Pet Shop Boys, Rage Against the Machine, They Might Be Giants, Kraftwerk, Kasabian, Simon & Garfunkel, Soundgarden, Misfits, Deadmau5, Adam & the Ants, The Black Keys, Blur, Muse, Seatbelts, Daft Punk and King Crimson are a few bands that probably illustrate rather well that my taste in music transcends genre. Basically, I like anything that's good.
Here are a few videos songs that I particularly love or that are iconic in their respective genres:
The Human League - Empire State Human
The Stranglers - No More Heroes
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Adam Ant - Stand and Deliver
Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
T. Rex - 20th Century Boy
