Windows 8

Yeah it's full of bugs and it crashed a bunch of times on me (not even a beta yet). But I'm not really into the whole touch and metro interface. Especially when they killed the start menu... The Boot time is great though, but still, I'm better with 7 also.

It still on Pre-Beta(Alpha) its normal that It have many problems for now.

Windows 8 already? Just when I finally adjusted and added back everything I needed on my Windows 7. :(

Bumping this thread, I have win8 - release version (not to be confused with release candidate). It's basically win7 with metro. I wouldn't recommend upgrading until the next service patch comes out, but if you're like me and don't have any sensitive operations on your computer it's only $30 or a tad more for the standard edition.

Metro is meh. It looks very pretty, but honestly everything is just aesthetics - task manager has been changed which at first I disliked, but am now getting accustomed to. I've noticed a significant increased speed in booting from shutdown, no significant changes (atleast with my machine) in booting from hibernation. Took me longer than necessary to figure out how to shut down.

Most games are compatible. I don't think much has changed in the graphics side other than WDDM v1.2 and DXGI 1.2, but I'm not experienced with either of them. Haven't had complications updating my AMD card's drivers, unlike what I hear with the Nvidia cards.

Edit: I didn't notice that "hibernation" was removed. What I was using was "sleep".

I'm sure I dislike this whole idea of metro. If I don't count my first DOS then damn I'm a desktop child after all. -.- IMHO this thingy is just a pretty trinklet... But can't judge the rest until it's full version right? At least it probably won't be worse than Vista.

The Metro-style interface is not something that you need to meddle with on a desktop. You can just skip to the familiar desktop GUI. I don't get why I keep hearing PC comrades complain about Metro when it is meant for touch-based interfaces (tablets). Its like going to a yaoi-con and complaining about not having enough furry.

That is true, but you're missing my point. You are not forced to use the Metro UI. Therefore, there is no need for touch interfaces for the regular PC users.

I hope that will last for at least a decade or two. I dislike the thought of wasting all those learned keyboard tricks.

So how many of you here on Fakku have bit the bullet and "upgraded" to Windows 8? I ask because I am somewhat unsure as to whether it is right for me.

I bit the bullet, I have it on both my desktop and laptop. I have had it since the release preview.

I'm going to wait until December until I even touch Windows 8 with a 10 foot pole. Right now the only thing I feel is attractive is the new Task Manager, and is that really worth it when I get that stupid Modern-UI with it?

Are there any discernible differences besides the Metro/Modern/What-ever-they're-calling-it interface from Windows 7, or things that become you didn't notice at first but now think of as being useful/make 8 somewhat better than 7. I'm using 7 Home Premium on my laptop (only computer I have that isn't a dinosaur compared to other computers) that I use for everything (gaming, internet, watching video, writing papers, etc.).

Also I happened to come across this thread while browsing reddit and it seems that Microsoft is giving away $25 off coupon codes for people who purchase 8 through the upgrade assistant even if their computer didn't meet the original requirements for the $15 upgrade.

The Metro start menu is very different from the original interface but once you get into the desktop area it's nearly identical to windows 7, accept that there is no start button. The start area is a-lot like the windows 7 phone or the X-box interface. There are apps where you can buy or download for free, there aren't a-lot of apps in the store right now but hey it is only the first day. Overall it is a-lot faster booting up than windows 7, and also it moves a-bit faster than windows 7. Also the windows upgrade offer is true I got both of my computers copies for $15, only my laptop qualified.

The annoying thing about the integration with an Xbox is I'm sharing internet with some one who has windows 8 and they keeps spamming things over to my Xbox and it's getting really annoying. I need to be able to turn permissions on and off on my side so I can decide what computer is allowed to connect.

Many people focus on the UI far too much, even though it is completely irrational to do so, since you would only see it when you log on. On the other hand, there are significant improvement under the hood in terms of security, performance, and efficiency. So I'd say it is definitely an upgrade worth getting.

So I'm downloading the upgrade right now and I plan to install classic shell afterwards so I don't have to bother with Metro unless I want to do so.

So I'm on Windows 8 now. Once I finally got ClassicShell to work everything after that was great.

You're really tempting me with W8 + ClassicShell, I might get it earlier than I said I would. Can you access the uninstall programs from the start menu in ClassicShell? If so I'm sold.
