Being in love with 2D characters. Right or Wrong?

This is one of the reasons why I hate America.
Seriously, while they're trying to approach the subject with an open mind, they are putting people who like lolicon in the same corner as child molesters, ready to strike any moment they have. They just think it's some sort of an 'escape' for those who are insecure about themselves and connect it with reality. Yes, they do to an extent, but like the presenter said, if such a guy was together with his daughter, WATCH OUT!
Basically the whole video can be summarized with; 'Liking 2D? I feel sorry for them'.
Not for a single moment do these people think of the possible fact people prefer 2D to 3D because they just prefer it that way and aren't interested in 3D. But no, they are 'psycho people in denial and with no spine to hit on real woman'.
Although I won't go much into my personal believes, these people are the prime example of those who think they're open minded enough to tell other people what's wrong and what's right, and refuse to see it on the 2D lovers' point of view, just because it doesn't fit into their personal logic.
/discuss
(And yes, ultimately I prefer 2D myself, but have no problems with finding myself a real girl)

The video is kinda true. But the sensitivity level of their opinions is low. These men can't find love, they probably did, so they're asking "Why can't they?". Personally, I haven't found love; Never had a boyfriend, and it's not like I don't want to. I really do. But I won't give up to a inanimate object as my boyfriend/husband. I feel like you need that human interaction with someone to be in love with them. Another person touching you in a hug, kiss, whatever is different than holding a cotton pillow.

This is it for me. It's just that...most girl I know put me in the childish category just because I love anime so....meh. Not that I'll treat them nicely if they like me anyway...
And about the issue...well, I think you're pretty much right. They're just like that you know...personally I think gossiping over singers etc is much more stupid. Not just that those activities hold no meaning whatsoever, they're actually butting into someone else personal life with that. But still...they think it's better to do that than watch a good anime with good storyline, and do some real thinking afterward...and end up liking the characters, just because of their delusional concept of reality. I fail to see what's so logical about that so...to me their personal logic is not even a logic.
All I can say is let them be...until they bug you personally about this. Love and any thoughts to me is something very personal and as long as it causes no one any harm, anyone is free to love anything they want.

I agree they should have an open mind but then again i do think it's strange to be carrying a Dakimakura around with you, however i don't really mind the loli though.
Eh but if i could somehow date a 2d girl i probably would. i don't have trouble getting 3d girls though.

Nemu...ta? tah?
Dah-cahpo?
Since when was Nemu twelve years old? I thought she was nineteen or something.
Shit. I had no clue she was so Loli.
Well, whatever. People like this are the same guys that called Rock satanic, or the guys who insist that video games make people murder school kids.
3D...hell. I heard 3D, and I immediately thought "4D, you fuckers. You guys exist in time/space, right?"
Which makes little sense, considering that is completely irrelevant.

Hm...this is a tricky issue to place a right or wrong stamp upon. On the one hand, having a 2d wife has several advantages. With a 2d wife, you don't have to worry about arguments or anything else that is negative with a standard relationship. You can also use your imagination to it's fullest with cute little date ideas, (I've seen some adorable images with monitors and food).
However, I believe that their are far more cons with having a 2d waifu. For one, it can limit your social interactions. Secondly, you can hear some serious complaints from your family, and no matter how much you ignore it, eventually it's going to get to you. And the biggest downfall...is...well...she isn't real! You can't really touch her, (even with a pillow), you can't interact with her, and I don't believe that you can truly love someone who doesn't exist.
However, I'm a very open-minded individual, and I'm not ragging on anybody who has a waifu. If you're happy, then that's all that matters in life.

I don't believe that you can truly love someone who doesn't exist. You should have seen me after I watched Evangelion. I was intensely lovesick for Asuka.
Seriously though, I like 2D for a couple of reasons. First off, my self opinion and self-esteem are really, really low, far to low for me to even consider a human relationship. Second, I just don't like interacting with other people, it's inconvenient and unenjoyable for me. Third, my general impression of women is that they're all vicious barracudas who will emasculate you and walk off with all your worldly possessions and paycheck at the drop of a hat. Fourth, I'm far to selfish a person to be able to contribute meaningfully to a relationship and I really don't want to change that.
Being in love with 2D allows the construction of one's perfect fantasy and the indulgence of it at one's discretion. For me it's the perfect solution.

First I think this is like the 3rd time I’ve seen this video posted here.
This is one of the reasons you’re a dumbass. Putting an entire countries opinion in the mouths of two people. I’m American and disagree with their opinion, though many Europeans probably share their opinion.
Now that that’s out of the way…. Marrying 2d characters isn’t wrong just weird, and what people think is weird usually turns to something wrong. It’s because people can’t understand it so they fear it and push it aside making it wrong so they can put a label on it.
Maybe you should look at it from their perspective; they see men who gave up on real life for a fictional one. Wouldn’t we say someone was crazy if they wanted to marry a sandwich? They see a man loving a 2d character that can’t possibly love them back it’s relatively the same thing a totally one sided relationship. It’s a matter of marrying an object it’s a hard thing to grasp for some people. Though there is nothing wrong with it just an odd thing so people try to draw conclusions from what they know and that is people should marry people.
It’s not wrong to love a 2d character giving up on real women is just a choice a person makes. It is odd but there is no harm to anyone so there is nothing wrong. It’s a person’s choice to love what they want (excluding some things).

Its wrong but its not wrong like the desire to murder innocence :D I can't say I've ever been in love with a 2D character. I've found 2D characters attractive but I'd never though "I wish I was in this videogame." Typically I would think "Wish a girl looked like her somehow."
As I said earlier I think it is wrong because she/he isn't a real being. She/he isn't real xD To be IN LOVE with him/her makes you dillusional, yes? Being in love with a cartoon or a drawing just seems moraley wrong in my opinion. That is if its LOVE not "I'm in LOVE with this food" :P
Also I answered the question I didn't actually watch the video. Americans are the ones with the least problem when it comes to this kinda shit. Asians are the ones who do this normally not us.

I'm a woman, and while I must admit that a good many of my kind are like that, a good amount of us are not. We do care and love our partners, whether they are male or female, and not just for their bank accounts. We aren't all gold-diggers. And the same could be said for some men, too, (ie, a dude having a sugar mama).
Just trying to rule out another stereotype, is all.
And I must admit, Asuka is definitely a keeper as far as waifus go, but Misato is my pic for the hottest evangelion gal.

I had a feeling I was a bit strong there. Like I said though, it's just a general impression, and It's more like the perceived risk vs. perceived reward is not good enough, ie, I'm not willing to risk the possibility of that happening because I honestly don't feel the potential reward to be good enough to offset said possibility.

Ah, no. It's all good. I completely understand, and your decision to be happy with just a 2d waifu is plausible enough for me.

But no, they are 'psycho people in denial and with no spine to hit on real woman'.The psychologist in me would like to point out that people who like 2D girls and are not interested in 3D, real life women are a little bit crazy. Though the psychologist in me doesn't want to use the word "crazy."
Maybe there is some sort of physiological defect that can make a person not be attracted to real people, but I'd say in 95+% of the cases, it stems from a mental or emotional disorder.
If I found out that my friend didn't like real women and liked to (seriously) pretend that he was married to a fictional character, I'd try to get him some help. Because something's wrong there.
That's not to say that it is necessarily wrong to prefer 2D women over 3D women. We've all had our hearts broken, and it's impossible for an image to tell us that she just wants to be friends. But if a person completely abandons all possible real life relationships, then that's crossing the line.

I can say that I also prefer 2D girls, just because all the girls I know are... uh, well it's better to say nothing; I know that they are not real, but I hope I'll find someone similar to them in the future, until then, 2D wins

[size=10]Rofl. I think it's funny when people find out about this.
What I don't get is... Why are people classed as a paedo if they like teens? Because we were teens once and we liked them then. So why should our preferences change.[/h]

Indeed, american's are strange people.
There was a video in Finland which was bit about Animecon 2009 (was about month ago in Helsinki) with title "Lolita-characters worries anime watcher's parents".
The anchor tried to ask from parents and organizer's opinions about Lolita-character's and if the people are sexually harrassed in any way.
It was pretty lame xd, in the end, there was nothing, only positive stuff =P

I like real girls, and I would OBVIOUSLY be lying if I said I don't like 2D girls as well. I'm attracted to them, I think they make for good porn, but that being said they can't compensate for a real girlfriend.
I agree with the video on some points, especially about how it's mentally unhealthy just to give up on human women. We are social creatures and we were designed to interact with one another. Liking hentai is okay, but it is possible to take it to an extreme.
If someone completely gave up real life to lead a fictional one in a fictional world I would be concerned about their mental state as well. It would be very easy for them to take their fictional life and apply it to the world around them. So, I can see why someone might be afraid/disturbed to be around that type of person.

The video kinda irritates me, but it's kinda true anyway...
I don't think there's anything wrong with real girls, it's just that I prefer anime girls much more.
Since when falling in love with an anime is a sin? Da Vinci draws too...
and I'm kinda upset - because we otaku are being treated like mentally-ill person.
And here we are...anime fans from all over the world united under one address - and thanks to Fakku! admins for that.
I'll be supporting you!!! (^_^)

Curious and Wondering
Really. It's simply a one-way street - one person may love a 2D character but he/she can never deny that the 2D character will never reciprocate their feelings.
The video's got some pretty interesting points. True, 2D girls are attractive, but we have to respect these people because their love choice is their right. If they want it and it's what their floats their boat, leave them be but these 2D-loving people shouldn't be suprised that other people are wary of them or other people try to talk them out of it anymore, because their "love preference" ain't normal.
I once met a 2D-loving otaku in a Singapore event 2 years ago about him being somewhat ostracized by his family for his 2D love. I left him a quote from xxxHOLiC: "What is normal, anyway? If you aren't troubling the rest of the world then there's no harm in being not normal". My best advice to him is that he do not trouble other people. It's not a sin to love 2D characters but it is definitely troubling for most people to see in public.
