Can You Be Happy Without Money?

I don't know about money per se. The dali lama has no money, but he is pretty happy. So are his monks.
Granted, the dali lama is given alot of gifts though...

Our society, and more importantly, our SPECIES could not survive without some form of currency. Things would be hectic.
It's like if I have a loaf of bread and want two ears of corn. Well, I would need to find someone who HAS corn and NEEDS bread. And even then, they might want more than one loaf. I would have to stand there and barter and hope for the best.
Do I like money? No. Though I'm sure we all would like it much more if we were filthy rich. But do I wish for a world without it? No. Not presently anyway.
I think it's possible to be happy without money, but money makes it easier to acquire the things we like. And I don't aspire to be a hobo, so for me money is a good thing.

Money is the source of our age of separation, love should inspire us to help each other without expecting something in return, only then can realize our well being rests in everything can we truly be happy.
Currency is everywhere from the air we breath to money in your wallets, currency is energy and is necessary for the universe to function.
The currency of man should be love, only then can we benefit as money is finite (so the more one person has the less someone else has). However love is limited only by the of all that comprehend it.
Money will only make you happy as the profit it makes, material goods it can buy, it can buy affection but not love. And loving another and being loved by another (whether it be a pet, your self, god, material possessions) is true happiness.
Only when you break the barrier between self and other can you be complete and thus only then can you be completely happy.
...you can tell I smoke way too much...

Speaking from experience. The happyest days of my life were spent being absolutely broke. Used to hop cargo flights from country to country, basicaly I was an international hobo. You'd be surprised, you can go pritty much anywere in the world for free if your willing to put in a day or twos' work loading cargo planes or shipping boats. Anyway, I met my sweetheart that way in gottenburg sweden while hitching my way to norway for a Golgo Bordelo concert. we've been together for three years. first year and a half i spent in sweden until she got a new neighbor who was very very fascist and decided to call swedish immigration to send me back to the states. Wich is strange because I believe that was the first and only person my whole time there who saw that I was black. Everybody else would call me 'min herre' if they didnt know my name, he called me 'nigger', but he was german so it was not much of a surprise. Unfortunatly nowadays with stable income, glued in place by a job and a condo I only get to see her two or three times a year, in the meantime my temporary american girlfriends ALL suck in comparison so I'm just sort of wasting away waiting for her to be on break so we can meet up.
I guess the point here is simple. I was pritty happy as a poor guy. Now I have a place of my own, all the comforts big soft bed, high def t.v on the wall, fios, friends, social life. But honestly I'd give it all to be poor and still in sweden. Or at least for the chance to punch that guy in the face for getting me deported.

What about if you live on a time where there's only barter? You do realise you're essentially substituting another form of currency for money.
Barter is trading eg. I give you my pig for your cow.
Money is essentially the same thing it's just a more convenient form of barter that doesn't require you to cart around cows and pigs.

I guess for me a good way to approach this is with the inital acceptance that at some stage in the life of every human being, happiness has been derived as a result of something purcahased with money (Barring the exception of tribes which have been purposefully left alone). So no one has lived a life where thier hapinees has not in some way derived from money.
Money is the middle ground so to speak, it allows us to produce a tangible form of the effort we (or our relatives) have put into our society (ie work)that can be used to trade' for something which shall bring us happiness. So yes as most people have stated I also agree that in the majoirty of situations you need money to be happy. Yet of course you can be happy without money, A hermit living in the mountains may hunt or forage to sustain himself and for a while find peace and happiness in introspection and self sufficinecy.
A more practical example is a man I know who spends most of his time living in other peoples houses and scrounging their things for himself, assuredly he is happy even though he has next to no money. Yet the strangest thing about it, is that he has a title (ie he is a lord/noble effectivley) yet no money to speak of, so money is a transient medium for hapiness it seems.

I have never had money, and yet, I have been resonably happy. So i would have to say that it is quite possible to be happy without money. It does, however, have a different set of problems than having money.

i am poor and very happy
it takes much patience, it is not for the weak of character. i still play my PS1, and Xbox, 360 is still to expensive at $300. i have never been above the poverty line, so i never pay income tax. i paint houses and groom and pet sit peoples dogs to make enough to buy food. i recycle and reuse much. and sometimes work for temp aggencies. i drink cheap beer(Hamm's $9.11 for a 24pak). i eat mostly cheap food, like ramen and frozen burritos and bolonga sandwiches. my parents own a farm with a crappy second house(lots of mice and bugs, little heat and AC) on it so i don't have to pay rent(also free cable TV, but no box so just basic). goodwill is my favorite store, i never buy anything new(except underwear). i have no offspring to support.
but most of all, my best and truest friends have also been poor. if i have i share, if they have they share. for example: if i should come up on some shoes that aren't my size, i would freely give them to the one they fit, no trade, or remembering debt. that's a selfish waste of time that only causes problem in the long run.
excpect nothing and you will never be disapointed. and every bonus is that much better.
down side, i have no savings or health insurance, should i get sick or badly injured, i'm pretty much screwed. i long ago accepted that death is the only certinty. not many wemons feel the same way about money, and once they realize i don't care about it, they leave, or if they only want to horde and remember debt, i leave. but these things don't bother me so much, so i'm still happy.

It depends if the world is like in an apocalyptic era.
But as of now it's a necessity for hobbies, food to eat and bills to be paid.

As long as I have enough money to pay rent and food to survive, I can be really happy...
As long as I've got somebody who loves me, and I can be with her... All I need is to cuddle her forever and that will be the happiest life I could imagine.. I wouldnt need posessions to be happy at all - Only love can bring me happiness

As long as I have enough money to pay rent and food to survive, I can be really happy...That brings up a very good point. (Sorry if something identical has been said by someone else, but I haven't been keeping close tabs on this thread.) Maybe the question isn't, "Can you be happy without money?" Maybe it's, "Can you happy without any disposable income?" For those of you who didn't study any business in school, disposable income refers to money that you have left over after paying bills and such.
As long as all your basic needs are met (food, shelter, clothing), can you be happy without a cent to your name?
0
In that case, I definitely can - I'd be happier if disposable income didnt exist... I wish nobody was greedy and we all felt this way - Like everybody just wants love and needs nothing else... Just be nice to others, love and be loved... Dont worry about anything else

Hmm, as long as it won't force me into a problematic situation, I can be happy with just enough money covering my needs. However that is only theory. It is not that I like to spend money, but I rather have some on the safe side for emergencies etc (car repairs, broken windows and all those things that are rare, but expansive), so I won't have to sit there, calculating on how much I have to cut in on my daily life, just to meet my ends.

Well if i had no money at all life would be hard and difficult to survive since you need money to be able to get the basic things to live. But if i only had the money to afford the basics a person needs i guess i could still live a happy life it would be hard but i think i would be able to manage. ^^

happiness has mostly NOTHING to do with money.. it all depends on the person doesn't it? if you are usually a positive person, with or without money you wouldn't care, because you'd be smiling all the time, ne? or if you're a negative person, then you'd just find some bad things in life... without caring for money. in my case with or without money, i honestly don't care.. because i've never felt happy either way... and the "happy" i want, is the one that makes my heart happy... i don't think i can buy anything that'll make my heart so happy... except food... maybe... O_O well like some people said, money is used to buy basic living supplies... so i guess it just makes your life a bit easier to have a base to rely on... but i'm not sure that it can make you happy... PLUS, money was just an invention, but we've come to rely on it for EVERYTHING...i think it would've been easier on us to just go back to bartering and bargaining... you know, something like "i give you a cow for 2 vases" or something... if we just stuck to trading like that, then we would'nt have need for money... but then again, that's what led us to this...
