I didn't read Rbz or Dante's post last time but...If you don't give a shit then fine. That wasn't the point I was making. The point was that it DOES affect you. Rbz, you can mock "think of the children" but it will have an impact on peoples parenting and how they raise there kids. I don't give a shit either way if you think it is right or wrong. But it will affect people's lives.
Nominally, really.
I do not think that it will have such a massive impact on people'e lives if gay people could get married.
I think that your average person would react to gay marriage being legal with a shrug and a passing interest.

Maybe so, but it also has a potential to be like the civil rights movement. I can see the silent majority in america finally get fed up and resort to violence or small towns across the US. And it will probably be labeled by the media and anti-gay marriage leaders as a state's rights vs. federal government issue.

Are you talking about people getting fed up with gays having the rights to marry? That people will go apeshit and destroy stuff because of the local husband and husband? I doubt that the people are that hateful, motivated, and stupid to do something like that but if they did, then you got yourself some fucking entertainment. Put that shit on the internet.

I think the point he was trying to make is people need to get over it. "Oh boo hoo, my child might be exposed to homosexuals." So what? It happens, it is part of society, rather see the child exposed to it from an early age and become accustomed to it rather than the ignorant, hateful parents that many are today.

Yeah I got that he was trying to say that, but he was just arguing against my point of it affecting the world we live in and peoples lives by saying "oh noes! think of the children!" which wasn't a point I was even arguing.
Plus I don't think it'll just happen. I think that there'll be a controversy that'll be covered all day by the main stream media, then THAT will be a catalyst of sorts. That of course is only IF it happens, I did say there was the potential, not that I'm saying it's a sure thing.
It can be something like dad's not wanting there kids to go join the football team cause the coach is a homosexual, something like that where it spirals out of control, a small incident igniting a conserative community to get national attention.

Very pessimistic, but when over 50% of all marriages end in divorce that line from Mass Effect always pops into my head "A pessimist is what an optimist calls a realist." Heh.

That's a classic example of a bad statistic. Sure it's not false, but it doesn't really convey correct information. Sure 50% of marriages fail, but that doesn't mean that 50% of people in marriages are expected to get a divorce. People who get divorced tend to go through multiple divorces.

The only issue here is the tax laws associated with marriage being applied to gay couples. Personally I'm not even sure what the laws are, but if the couple lives together like a straight couple they should be subject to the same laws, privileges, and restrictions. just my 2c

Well, divorces are way more common this century compared to the previous centuries (compared to back then, divorcing is more acceptable now in society then it was back then.). Though we can account for the number reasons why some people divorce (I don't feel like putting up the socialogy reasons for there are more then just them.). As for the gay marriage, if they want to do it, then let them do it, we live in an interesting world.

Who are we to change a religious institution?I wouldn't call marriage a religious institution. It is nothing more or less than a civil union. Many countries, especially the United States, has been trying to get away from the whole religious underscore of marriage, by even legally defining it as a civil union. Implying that it doesn't have anything to do with any religious beliefs.

Marriage: the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc.
Marriage at it core is a religious institution while civil unions are not. While the two do the essentially the same job they are not interchangeable. Since marriage is a religious practice the government has no say in it. Which also sets the groundwork for the government not recognizing any marriage legally or even offering "advantages" to married couples when compared to single people.
I'm going to agree with Gibbous's statement on Page 8. In a nutshell, state sanctioned marriage should be abolished.

This is too stupid to make up.
I can't get the link because Youtube is gay, but there's a private video showing an ad where its basic points are this:
Gay marriage was legalized in Scandinavia in 2004. What happened? Crime multiplied by 19 times. The death rate increased dramatically, and the drug rate more than quadrupled.
Let's break this down. Scandinavia is not a country. None of the countries within Scandinavia have legalized gay marriage...and all of those statistics are completely made up.
Seriously, how far will some people go to say, "GAY MARRIAGE IS BAD GODDAMMIT!"
So what's your opinion, should gay people be allowed to marry?
I'm not talking about do you approve of gay people or not like that other thread, I mean should gay people be allowed to marry eachother in the United States...the recent idea proposed is that we allow them to become UNIONIZED, and give them all the rights of a married couple without officially being married...and conservatives are hating this idea as well.
I'm bisexual, so my opinion doesn't count.

What do you mean, your opinion shouldn't count? Because you'd be biased.
In the words of Penn himself:
Homosexuals have every right to be married. Marriage might have begun religious, but it's not anymore. What do two atheist lovers call it? Marriage. What do a Jewish and Christian couple call it? Marriage. what do reasonable people call it? Lifetime enslavement to a horrible whiny-ass bitch that'll suck the life from your very bones.
But I digress.
The only reason why we don't think it's allowable is because the giant invisible man in the sky said so when we were kids.
Need I say more?
