Malaysia claimed Bali’s pendet dance as their culture, and Malaysia has given [us]Noordin M. [Top].I lol'd. Geez, this is like an English and an American arguing over whose language English is. Stupid.
Btw...Malaysian here.

No comment from me. i got my own problems to deal with. this kind of international issues(is it?) should be dealt by the authority. not by us commoners. even if we voice out, who would listen. right?
My apology if i've offend you guys, OH BTW i'm from Malaysia.

Really?
I think it should be okay to advertise Indonesian cultural activities in a Malaysian Tourism Advertisement. Seeing as Malaysia is a pretty culturally diverse country in its own right. It's like saying "In Malaysia, we're not just Malaysian,we got (insert list of multiple SEAsian cultures + others here) too". But that's politics for you I guess~

Indonesians are just on a anger marathon since many traditional Indonesian Art are being patented as Malaysians.
well, I blame that on Indonesians government for taking art and traditional stuff for granted. They have never bothered trying to patent them until it's too late.
Malaysia has already patent many stuff from indonesia
-Keris
-Batik
-Reog Ponorogo (mask dancing)
-etc
the most facepalm moment for me when Japanese patent tempe (soybean block), even though I've been eating it since I was little...

Omg so such things can be patented? I never knew...
Well, Malaysia's rather stupid in that case...I mean, the patenting. Malaysia and Indonesia are not that different anyway, except that Indonesia got a better political system, so why bother to fight? Can't we just....share?

I don't know much about Malaysia or Indonesia but I believe that It's fine as long as they're advertising something that is truly part of their culture. Or in other words if the Pendet is something that was actually practiced in Malaysia I think it's fine however If this patent business (the article doesn't really explain it) prevents Indonesia from using it to attract tourism then I would say that Malaysia patenting a dance originally from a different region/country would be wrong and that it is the original place should get the patent.
Though I don't understand much about this patent business and Exoduz never really stated a question so I'm not sure if I can say much.

I'm an Indonesian.
And I was very dissapointed.
I wonder why Malaysian government did that...
Reog Ponorogo, from the name we know that mask was from Ponorogo regency in Java island.
I wonder why UNESCO couldn't take a look further before agreeing that claim from Malaysia.
BTW, no offense to Malaysians here.

I am indeed an Indonesian that give a damn lol about this things.
I mean, we share same common culture, so the fuck with that. It just like South Korea and North Korea. If we do not stop it, we will just invoke a war.
I just can say it's like "That computer is my brother's and also mine, we bought it together. But there is so much stuff in here that is mine. So that is mine."
And yes, that is random answer...

Yeah honestly I think the same, even if we voiced our thought here, who would listen to that? The authority that represent both sides should start thinking and do their part in this case.
Yes it is, I guess.
Yes, it's indeed a shame that government never take concern to patented most of our culture and traditional art until it's too late, it seems....yeah, our government take blame on that part too. Seriously, I think drama can be avoided if our government take initiative to that, but...meh.
Major facepalm on that part, it's not even funny to know that my favorite food is...oh well...(*insert facapalm.jpg here*)

I sense major truth in this post and yeah if we not learn to solve this problem; potential war will happen in future.
Also, I honestly think that the one who will reply to this topic is either people from Indonesia or Malaysia; I just hope it wouldn't invoke flame warz from both sides too here.
No offense intended to my fellow Indonesians and Malaysians here. my apologize if I somewhat offend you.

this thread should be in 'Serious Discussion'...
about this pendet dancing stuff...i never heard about it even though i'm a Malaysian...it's true most of our culture related to Indonesia...it's because many of our ancestors were once from Indonesia before they travel to 'Malay Land'(the name before it change to Malaysia in 1963)...maybe some of them brought the cultures from Indonesia...Peace...8)

As an European I'd like to say, I'm sorry, this is something that probably orginated in the European Union (that kind of dispute, not the dance, that is).
There is a special kind of plum jam traditional to my region, the biggest makers of it are my town, Schwetz (polish Świecie), and Strzelce. And, for some "grown-up reasons", that jam must be named. Polish word for plum jam is "Powidła". And now- should that special regional powidła be named "Świeckie" (of Świecie), or "Strzeleckie" (of Strzelce)?
There is a special kind of sheep milk cheese in the Tatra mountains called "Oscypek" in both Polish and Slovakian. To which culture does it belong? (And awnser "Tatra Mountains Culture" is not an option)
Anyhow, I feel I'll lose if I were to awnser such a meaningless question.
Hope it won't turn in to something like the Football War between Honduras and Salvador.

Kore wa zenbu baka no koto yo.
I think both country's have nothing better to do. So they try to find even miniscule things like this and make it big which is just a waste of time.
I know some of those dances, They may be similar but who cares.
And how are they sure that Malaysia really claimed it, what if someone just spread a rumor.
And What the hell are the Malaysian's thinking trying to steal another country's culture.
At the very least they should edit it a bit. That, won't be a problem i suppose.
Ex: The Zapin is derived from the Arab's dances
