When is it inappropriate to be looking at anime?
0
Hey Guys, I was wondering since my dad's been leening into me lately when exactly does anime start to get inappropriate and unacceptable? I mean dont get me wrong I love anime and hentai but at the same time my dad is telling me that im 21 and that I should be focusing on things such as job skill development etc etc...So I was wondering what peoples views here on fakku.net is on this matter, and what I should do about this? I mean as of right now ive sort gone undercover with my anime watching habits cause my dad is trying to get me to move on so yaaa...If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated and please do feel free to discuss this and weigh in with your opinions on the matter of being older and watching anime and reading manga etc etc. :)

Well Anime isn't just a "kiddie" thing. There is mature stuff as well as kid stuff. Really as long as it doesn't interfere with your life no one should have the right to say "Stop It!"
Would it be wrong of me to assume your father watches sports? Well if he does ask him about some sports info. Chances aren't too bad he'd know some really specific facts about stuff that happened years ago. How is that useful towards getting a job or learning skills in the workplace? Even if he isn't a big sports fan, you get the idea right?
Now one shouldn't go around shouting random Japanese words or adding suffixes like "-san" or such. But that's just obnoxious and shouldn't be done anyway.
Don't let someone force you out of something you enjoy by shaming you out. Come to it on your own terms and stop or continue on your own terms.

General Cow pretty much hit it spot on. Everyone has something to entertain themselves with, and if anime is your thing, no one should be able to take it away from you. Not just sports, but your dad probably watches movies and TV as well, and seeing as how anime was not only meant for kids, I doubt there should be any problems.

Heh, my mother and my sister think I should grow up, but my dad is just fine with it. I'm twenty-one and I watch more anime now than I did as a kid and teen, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. I know a lot people in their high-twenties and some in their thirties who still watch anime.
Let us know when you have hikkikomori tendencies, but other than that tell your family to screw off. :P

Loving anime is just like loving movies or TV shows. There isn't a set age where you should set the stuff aside and "move on." Though you might need to spend less time on it, so that you can do more important things. (For example, you shouldn't watch ten hours of anime a day if you're trying to find a job or go to college.)
In short, it's silly to tell Person A to stop watching anime and not tell Person B to stop watching movies with Vin Diesel. But there are a ton of adults who watch Vin Diesel movies.

Well anime is like any other book well some are and i mean the people who make anime are older than the ones who read it so that if u think about it is saying a lot.

There is no such thing as "inappropriate" age level for people who enjoy anime/manga. I mean, even Japan's Prime Minister likes to occasionally read manga and tankobons. Manga authors are mostly adults. Anime expos are run by older people. Watching anime and reading manga now and then is no different from reading Paolo Coelho's books and watching UFC. It's not a restrictive lifestyle.
If daddy is so buggy, try stretching the boundaries, like watch anime on your PSP/iPod/iPhone. Or read manga online.
But keep your future priorities in check because that's tbe big reason why parents are so fussy with their adult teen children. If you can balance your love for anime/manga with your future plans and career you're still on the right side of the road.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Their are so many themes and genres for all age groups that make it interesting. It's a nice form of entertainment, and that's all you really need. As long as it doesn't effect what you need to do, why should it be a problem?

Pfft what does you dad know about anime? I bet not much. If he did, he wouldn't say that to you. And what's so bad about whatching anime? I don't see any problem in it whatsoever.
And people should clear out of their heads the stereotype that cartoons are for kids.

To be looking at?
Personally, since my father is exactly like that, I'd say "When you happen to be over my shoulder, commenting on things you know nothing about."
But, as to "watching" anime, I feel that's a silly question. It's like saying, "at what age does my favorite hobby become inappropriate?"
While some hobbies, like stealing underwear or throwing spitballs, are almost always inappropriate, other hobbies, like reading comics/manga, watching sports/movies/dramas/anime, building models, or a vast amount of other things people do to occupy their time, will never become inappropriate so long as they don't interfere with your everyday life.
Basically, your dad is full of shit. Just ignore it.

Quoted for presence of truth...
Further, I would love for somebody to blow a serious amount of time and energy and match up anime/manga that have similar plots to popular sitcoms/dramas/what have you. The result would be fun to look at...
Would do it myself, but time restraints on a student are heavy and unforgiving...

Or perhaps he's just annoyed you're just sitting at the computer a lot watching anime/other stuff rather than going out and getting a job and focusing on furthering your life without depending on him so much. It might not be 'loljapanesecartoons' at all.

"im always cute"

Also, protip. If the anime has any, any fanservice in it, don't watch it in public. The girl wrinkling her nose at you? That would be me.

I don't think that there is ever a time in life where anime is "inappropriate" but i do agree that there is eventually a time when you should go look for a job hell even part time might get your dad off your ass but that's just my opinion

you have a little bit of a problem there friend... but if you want advice I give you this - >> keep watching! stoping in watching anime is like never going the toilet for a year... if anime is a part of your life and you're aware of that then don't hesitate to watch... just be sure to spend your time wisely. follow your father's advice but do not forget the things you enjoy the most - too much of something is bad...
I you're smart enough, you can do both without neglecting the other...
good luck with that...

If you are 21 and have a job or are in college then it is fine, but if you are 21, living in your parents basement and unemployed you really need to grow up.

The only concievable issue is when a person spends too much time on thier hobbies. There are about four people in the world who actually focus on thier career over anything else. You need an outlet, and this is it.
If you are doing moderately well, and they persist, then it's time to get pissy, because they are under the impression that all anime is children's programming (not porn) and you should move on to more "mature" programming, like watching people try to fit through differently shaped holes in moving walls.
