This is a question I have just come across and it got me thinking.
Have you ever been in a situation where you have had to stop and think about these two options?

The only person who doesn't make mistakes is the one who never tries
Think of it not as a failure but as a way that does not work
Say what you will about failure. Without it, diseases would not have been cured. life spans would still be in the 30 to 40 range. We would be walking everywhere. No cars trains planes etc Real estate agents would be selling moldy caves
And we would be eating everything raw (Picture the first cave men. Puts a piece of meat in the fire with his hand. gets burnt "Well shit I am never doing that again"
no weekends holidays birthdays anniversaries etc cause someone tried to make a calendar and failed
NO INTERNET No FAKKU
Mangas would be scratched out on stones using little stick figures
Edit Random thought here
If you think you are going to fail You will

If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make a mistake? Because of failure and the outcome. But if we never try, then how will we know?

Never trying is, far as I'm concerned, the worst possible outcome. You can always get up and dust yourself off if you fall down, but to stay away from the trail for fear of falling down means someone else is going to get the treasure chest at the dungeon's root.
And we can't have that.
And we can't have that.

It depends, really.
Logically, if the consquences of failure are worse than the consequences of not trying, the trying and failing is worse. And sometimes, even if you do achieve the goal, the cost is too high (the term "phyrric victory" exists for a reason).
There have been some endeavors that I wish I never tried.
Going to medschool was a waste of 10 years of my life, for example. I wish I never tried. If I had just graduated and gone to work, I might have some money right now. Instead, I went to med school, spent 6 more years studying, then after graduating realized that I was so incredibly, unbelievably unhappy with what I was doing that I couldn't do it anymore.

yeah fatman, but I think it's more that it took you so long to discover that fact rather than the actual attempt.

We never knew until we try, right ?
I better fail after trying rather than never trying.
Even tho i fail in the last .. it can be used as a lesson to the future.
Mistakes are what makes people get better in the future ... depend on how he/she taking what 'mistake' is.

Exactly.
But when a person try to achieve something then he/she must know/realize the consequences before trying it. Preparation is always important ... and that's what people missed most of the time.

Never trying. If you do something you want but you know you'll fail, ttry it anyway. Or else it'll haunt you for the rest of you're life.

Never trying. If you go for it, even if you fail, you can always say that you tried it.
Plus I think never trying is failing before you even start.

Never trying. With failure comes experience, experience that can be used to make sure failure doesn't happen again and eventually succeed and move forward. If you never try, you can't fail but you also can't succeed.

Hmmm, well for me never trying would be the worse than failing. Failing is experiance keep failing you bound to have success someday. It's better than never know a thing.

People always say to at least try, for even if you failed, you know you still did your best. But I find that if I try so hard, and yet still fail, I'd be more depressed with myself, rather than having not tried at all.

I say, "It's better to regret trying than to regret not trying at all". The quote may have been from an anime, but it sums it up pretty nicely for me.
0
i'd say never trying because when you look back on it wouldn't you rather say yea i did that instead of dam i should of done this instead of that plus with failure means you can always try again.

When failing is worse than to never try at all, never trying is better.
Each situation is different.
Ex:
Judge: "Shoplifting? What do you have to say for yourself?"
Convicted: "Never trying is worse than failing!"
Ex:
Can`t think of anything specifically, but trying and failing at something will prevent thoughts of regrets of not trying at all in some scenarios.

It depends, really, but for the most part, "Nothing can happen if you don't swing the bat."
It's better to know, one way or the other, than to wonder what could have been.

As for which is which - I'd go with the never trying statement.

Initially, I thought many users would choose "never trying". However, after reading through most of the replies, I realized that failing can have terrible consequences at times.
Perhaps I could throw in a third option: Never trying to fail? Perhaps this only applies to activities in which we willingly partake. I believe there are people who try too hard to succeed, and do not take enjoyment in the process of a particular activity.

Curious and Wondering
Depends on the situation.
The "never trying" option is worst if the situation has a percentage of success. As long as there's a window for success, no matter how small, it's better to fail than to never have tried.
The "failing" option, on the other hand, is worst if the situation has NO chance of success. If it's an exercise in futility, it's better to just never try it at all and save yourself some effort.
