One of those particular points in the game where it just wants you to go fuck yourself. Have fun in Blighttown, I know I didn't on my first time! What sucks is, I never got my damn sword. I died near where the falchion and wanderer's kit was supposed to be. And since I avoided using the bonfire in Blighttown to avoid enemies respawning (I was pretty much gambling at that point, hoping to go back the way I came.) I'd have to start back from Firelink Shrine.
Question; If I die again, trying to go back for the Iaito one last time, would I get sent back to Firelink again or would I get bumped down to Undeadburg as it was the latest bonfire I rested at after Firelink.
Also, since the Iaito is pretty much on the opposite end of Blighttown, would going to The Depths be a bad idea? I mean, would I be better off forcing my way back to Firelink and then finishing off Undeadburg/parish? Or should I try to push on into the Depths. Mind you, at this point I'm a SL 24 and still have only the Thief's kit as my best set of armor. My best weapon is the Drake sword, but I don't want to rely too heavily on it as I've noticed that it runs through it's durability pretty fast.

You'll always respawn at the last bonfire rested, unless it's some very specific stuff. Like dying in dark Anor Londo will always put you at the Anor Londo bonfire.
If it's your first playthrough you should've gone through the Depths anyway. Not because it's one of the most frustrating zones for first timers, no.
Laito is good, but you can get the Uchigatana way earlier and also easier. In two ways, actually. It's basically the same weapon, just slightly different movespeed. Laito is a tiny bit faster for tiny bit less damage.
Drake Sword is a good weapon until after you ring the second bell. If you progress the main story, you'll get some high armor opponents where the drake sword will start doing about 20? damage per strike. You have pretty much until that to upgrade to a better weapon.
Dex weapons are abundant in the lategame, tons of good stuff. Early on, Uchigatana/Laito are the first good ones. Except if you do some hardcore shortcutting for specific areas, anyway.
If you wanna run dex weapons, you should also keep all your dragon scales for later. Two of the better PvP dex weapons in the game require dragon scales.

The Iaito was one of my favorite weapons in Dark Souls. The draw slash is pretty awesome and katanas are just great dex weapons in general. I used it for most of the game but then I started using the Lifehunt Scythe in my second play-through. I do hope they add more katanas in Dark Souls 2 though.
