I tried out the Colosseum today. It was cool but both people really need good connections. I kept having people teleport behind me and back-stab me. The Artorias fight was awesome too. I owned that faggot with my Lifehunt Scythe and Soul Spears. Now fight Kalameet (the black dragon). I can't beat him... with my main account...

It's hard for me... I'm level 201 and on NG+6. One hit is like more than half my health D:
And I suck.

Ahh well I'm only on my first NG and I'm around 130ish. I guess I'm somewhat okay but he sounds like he's gonna be tough.

SL 75, I got to Artorias, was doing fine, dodging good, figured blocking with the grass crest would be useless, he hit me ONCE while I was casting a spell, death, guess I shouldn't even bother to have flasks since I'll be one shotted

On my first playthrough, my only weapon when I got to Ornstein was a lightning washing pole. That fight really fucks you the first time, and I couldn't figure out how to kill Ornstein when Smough is still around at first so I would only be able to go the Super Ornstein route. Dealing so little damage because of the lightning weapon, my only way to success was abusing his spear throwing loop and shooting him with a bow. That was hella lame, and I wish I wouldn't have listened to the advice of OMG LIGHTNING WEPUNS SO GUD. Haha.

I just finished beating Kalameet. Honestly, he wasn't actually that hard. The fight required a lot of patience but his attack patterns were relatively slow and easy to predict. I'm about level 145 and I used the Lifehunt Scythe along side of the Greatshield of Artorias. I had the Darkwood grain ring and Havels ring equiped as well. Basically, I could block of his physical attacks and dodge the magic ones. It took a while because I played it safe by only attacking after his air lunge/dive attack.

Alright, so I finally got around to picking this game up yesterday and started a playthrough as a thief. So far, I got to SL 14 and just killed the Taurus Demon. I just wanted to know if you guys have any advice for a (relative) newbie like me? I mean, other than the typical "learn to block/dodge/etc." that is more or less obvious to me at this point in the game.

He's really easy if you keep a clear head and play safe.
The halberd is the best weapon.

The halberd is the best weapon.
also to make the capra demon fight a lot easier, get some poise.
this can be remidied either by buying the chain mail armor (which gives some good early poise) or getting the wolf ring (go into the forest after the blacksmith and go past the door to the right. there should be a tree blocking the way which you can kill cause its fake. then go right, past the two stone guardians and there is the wolf ring which gives a free 40 poise.
having the wolf ring early makes the game much easier to deal with.
personally my favorite weapon is the Silver Knight Sword

Don't be afraid to use guides if you want to keep your sanity.

Thanks for the tips so far, but I now have a specific question relating to PvP. I've been repeatedly invaded by players that I can barely even scratch, even with a backstab with my Bandit's Knife +2, but only one or two swings from them and I'm flat-on-my-ass dead. I'm a SL21 now, so I don't quite see how I'm so overwhelmed by these guys. As it is, they've actually been more of a pain in my ass than the last few mini-bosses I've encountered.

Dark Souls is more gear than level dependant. You can only be invaded by people below or at your level, so those low-level gankers play the game with a as low as possible SL character, get all the best endgame gear and then go fuck around with newbies. Get out of the beginner areas, get some gear yourself and they stop being a problem since a very high percentage of those dudes does not know how to actually play in PvP.
For 'actual' PvP instead of just ganking and griefing other people SL100-120 is where most of the action is at.

A lot of the guys that killed me wore armor that I've never seen before and usually had some really big weapons with them (I think one of them had Wolverine claws). In terms of getting new gear; not too long ago I managed to get myself a Drake Sword and then found Astora's Straight Sword and a Dragon Crest Shield. I'm also at SL24 now

The Drake Sword is quite good, but it has almost no upgrade potential compared to other weapons. Don't waste time and supplies upgrading it. Use it until you get to a better smith and get some supplies. I only used special shields for special situations and could barely figure out how to parry, so, I dunno. Also, never use boss souls for currency, 'cause that's how you make special weapons and armor.

Okay, here's a new development that I feel warrants a question or two. While I was in Blighttown, looking for the Iaito katana, I was killed just after lighting a bonfire (I didn't rest there). I respawned back at Firelink Shrine, but the bonfire was no longer lit and I got a message telling me that the firekeeper is absent. I also found that the woman who upgrades my flask is dead (who I now presume is said firekeeper). Which sucks, because I found a firekeeper soul while in Blighttown. Anyway, I picked up a black orb that supposedly allows me to invade her killer, but I can't use it, even as a human. Can anybody fill me in on what's going on?

You won't be able to do anything about till a little after the midway point in the game.
There are two more firekeepers you can visit to upgrade your flask though. One of which you'll meet once clearing Blighttown.
