Oh the whole "must be connected to the internet to play."
Yeah, it's another form of DRM, but it's actually very understandable in terms of Diablo 3. People used to hack the game offline to get extremely geared up, and then bring their character online.
But Diablo 3 is an MMO. How many people really buy the game just to play offline? Unlike other games with DRM, online is the main component of the game. Just like how people play Starcraft II for online. Sure, some people would definitely just want to play it for the story alone and whatnot, but the large majority of the people will be playing online. So either way, it's not that big of a deal.
However, with the new auction house that Blizzard is adding, it does become a huge deal. Real money is involved now. Not just the in-game currency, the real, cold, hard cash. For those who don't know, D3 adds a new auction house where people can buy items from other players with real money. If people could hack like they did in D2, it's going to cause a big issue. All these hackers would bring in their epic gear from screwing with the single player game, and then bringing it to the market to sell for a pretty penny. It's going to be mess.
But, I really don't think Blizzard should just limit people to playing online. I'm pretty sure that there are people out there who have really crappy connections, making it hard to stay connected. They need to look this over to try and balance it out properly. Perhaps you can have some offline characters for lan and single player, while another set of characters solely for online player.

First I've heard about the auction house system. Evolution of buying in-game items has always intrigued me. Personally, this is another good attractive reason to play the game. If I enjoy playing and can make some money back selling stuff then it's a more satisfying experience.
Offline play is a horrible idea with the inception of the auction house. If real money is going to be involved, I'd want zero risk of previous shit happening. If the security and safety isn't there, it'll fall apart instantly and nobody will use it.

You bring up good points but let me go through some of them.
This was true for Diablo. Not Diablo 2. Offline characters were strictly offline. Not once in all my years of Diablo 2 did I run into something like that.
That can be argued based on what you consider and MMO to really be. Diablo 2 had lobbies for games with a max of 8 players. Do you consider Spiral Knights an MMO? How about Team Fortress 2?
Yep. Everything is right about this one. Blizzard's excuse for this was "The players were just going to do it anyway". Oh? What's your excuse for not doing the same thing to World of Warcraft then?
Simply put, Diablo 2's system. As a follower and fan of Diablo since the first game came out this really hits me deep. When it was announced I was sure I was gonna buy it. I was certain it was gonna be even better than 2. Now I just get dissapointed more and more with everything they reveal.

I for one can't wait for the game, and now with the announcement of this smexy Collectors Edition, its getting me even more pumped. Are you looking forward to D3? Would you be willing to spend the extra $40 for cool bonus stuff? Speak your mind.

Just got an invite into the beta :DCongrats, but curse you ;). Hope I get an invite at some point, though after waiting this long.....

I got into the beta for D3 about 2 weeks ago. It's fantastic. However, I'm the only person I know with a beta invite so I've pretty much been strictly soloing.
Can't wait for it to be released, already preordered my collectors edition and once it's out, I'm going to temporarily retire all my other games for at least a minimum of 6 months.
