Urugann is bitch too xD last time I did Uru we got him low and then he progressively killed 3 of the party members with one roll attack and ended the quest. We were all like FFUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!
I use LSwords mostly but on some occasions I use switchaxe or lance. I cant wait to get SinisterSaints, it looks so damn awesome.

I learned never to rush at Uru armed with the Ananta Boneblade and Rathian amror set...worst experience ever T_T, though the people I partied with were nice enough to help me with it, we still go killed. I should've made the Gaiasp when I had the chance.

At first, i thought the Uru would be easy, since me and my cousin fought it in the arena, but the environment makes such a difference. The only bs about fighting Uru is the rolling and death slams, other than that it's kind of simple.

Go offline and talk to the cat in your room
Select the option "Transfer arena data"
All of your earnings will go into your box or inventory

I got 3/5 of the Lagia set now. Now to go hunting for some more Lagias for the materials to make the helmet and legs. Also trying to get lucky with RustShards to get a Rusted Great Sword and then turn it into a Elder Monument.

What armour abilities do you use? I personally always use cap guru (cuz its so damn usefull) and sometimes attack up. My set consists of a mix of Barroth, Rathian and Diablos armour that I switch up depending on the monster. Sometimes I wear hellhunter or Baggy hat/teddy Bear hat for fun. For weps I use Jhen Mohrans LSword, Rathalos lsword, Lagia lsword, the starter switchblade Or the Thane Lance.
Right now Im just getting the lat stuff to create my Sharq Event Lance, its jokes xD.

I don't really look at the amour abilities, I look at the general defense and element defense they provide. So right now, I just want to make certain sets to counter elements of certain boss monsters.
And I don't really have that many weapons, all I have are the Ananta Boneblade , Wyvern Blade "Fire", Valkyrie Blade, Commander's Dagger, and a Plume Flint. Though I prefer using Longswords because the combination attacks are really useful, the other weapons were ones I made for certain situations. Right now I just want to make a stronger hammer to smash the cracks on the Jhen's back.
Damn, I want to be HR30 already so I can fight it!!!! >.<
But the quests leading up to it are gonna be damn impossible for me, "To Catch an Uragann" and "Into the Danger Zone"

I have this but I've barely reached the third zone (the swamp like area) in the offline mode and I haven't tried online yet because I always wait to try the online mode until I have the basics and preferably the intermediate tricks of the game down. But, I've been wondering which is easier to farm materials for equipment and to learn the game, online or off? Second question being how do you communicate with people online? It's been a few months since I've touched the game so I don't remember if that was explained anywhere.

You don't, it's actually better to learn the mechanics of the game in the offline experience (AI's movements, tendencies, and predictability) as 1) The farming will only get harder as you progress in armor levels. and 2) It'll transition wonderfully into the online world. The only thing you'll need to learn online is just what you can do to help the team in the hunt (such as upswinging with great swords or trap setting/beaconing). You can also try playing online and see how others do it (you'll notice an experienced player will always try to keep the combos small).
As for communications, I've only seen people use typing as a means. Not sure if they had enabled Wiispeak or not.

Thanks Nhezu, my main problem with the game is learning to fight with anything but the SnS. The huge hit to movement speed with everything else just kills me (literally and just as a huge annoyance). I guess the main thing is to just stick with it and try and learn it the same way I learned to use the SnS. I've been able to do pretty well with the SnS but I get bored using the same thing every time and I know that I'd be more useful online and I'd have an easier time offline if I could learn at least one other weapon.

Believe it or not, a good way to start new weapons is see how some people use it. In Monster Hunter Freedom 2, I was your typical all around long sword user, but by the time Freedom Unite came out, I was the head's on Hammer Timer. SnS is always a good weapon to start off and usually becomes everyone's flexible weapon of choice as it is the fastest weapon that has a blocking capability, in addition to being able to use items when unsheathed.
Just because I feel like going in depth, I'll give you a run down on what the main uses are for all the weapons.
Great Sword- Strongest hitting weapons (next to hammers) with a cutting and knock out capability. Meant for low number strike combos (1-2) but makes up for the lack of speed with brute power. Has a charging ability (can't help you there as it's all based on timing) and is sometimes the only thing used by other players, also known as the Art of the GS Charge.
Long Sword- The faster hitter of the GS family, used only for cutting. Because of the higher speed, the LS combo time can be increased, however, should be left at a lower number for safety. LS combos should be kept at a low-medium number of strikes (3-5 hits) before bailing. It's also best to use the back hop slash to move away before rolling to give some room. One of the more commonly used weapons.
Hammer- Heavy weight of all the weapons, pure blunt force. Because they're incredibly slow, people constantly use the Charge ability as you are mobile during this mode. Full charge stationary swings are your main weapon due to the AoE effect as well as high damage given from it, secondary being triple pound. Always aim for the head. Gutsy weapon to use early on in my opinion so it's better to learn the limits of it and apply to the monster you face.
Lance- The turtling weapon. Not much to say other than tank the blows with block. Poke poke poke then block. That's really it, other using the Charge attack as a method to getting out of a tight situation or help apply extra DPS with friends. There is an art to dodging just about anything with it's short hop evasion but that's why it's an art among experts.
Bowgun- Well this is fairly obvious. Shoot from a far, make sure you dodge out of the way if they charge. Gotta be smart when gunning.
Slash Axe- Sadly I can't say much about it as I'm mainly a PSP MH player, but like I said, observe how people do it.
It's also good to know that you can always dodge/roll in the middle of a combo. I always do it when I play GS, LS, or Hammer. Dodge when you feel like it's the right time during combos. And you're getting charge at, always tuck and roll.

every 1 opinion is different for weapons, mine is (on MH3)
Sword & Shield : average damage dealer, great supporter while still packing good offense, and have the quickest combo starter. SnS IMO are not my type of weapon, it can't break things when monster are big and their parts are unreachable, and they were too fast to kept their combo stay in 1 part of monster, since the damage differs on where did we hit monster parts
and i never was a good supporter in online, so i rarely use SnS
Great Sword : great damage dealer, great part breaker, and 1 of the fastest killer in MH3
GS : unlike SnS, forces its user to completely watch their surrounding, learn when & when not to charge, and can break alot of part easily due to their high vertical reach & ability to deal single damage on 1 time. GS was the fastest killer in previous MH due to their charge, which make their ATP become 1.13x than their original power, although you can only have 1 charged attack, i did mention that monster part take different damage rite? and GS can deal that HUGE damage in 1 part, which if it hit monster weakest part, it is almost guaranteed flinch (monster steps back), but MH3 monster weakest part are harder to hit than any previous MH, but this issue are fixed by, monster are much slower than previous MH and i mean MUCH slower, their hitzone, (when they attack, some attack will just hit you out of nowhere even you already out of it) are much smaller, not to mention their part are almost equally distributed than previous MH (like hitting rathian neck than hitting rathian head doesn't really differs that much)
Long Sword : average-high damage dealer, have the widest attack range, 1 of the fastest killer, but also the slowest killer
ah, all i can say is, each LS user are REALLY different, those who never aim, those who aim & know where and when
LS allow you to charge its power by 3 time, using their spirit slash
it is advised to fully charge the bar below your stamina, then start using spirit slash, and only spirit slash until the bar start going down again
you can make you gauge stay where they are by using normal attack occasionally when the gauge is full
you can amplify LS damage only by using spirit finisher, the last combo in spirit slashes, and you have to hit something not friendly with it, not your friends
why in start i say there are 2 type of LS user? BECAUSE my friend, almost all LS user dies VERY quick, or usually the 1st to die, and did i say wide attack range? its also fast, and stops your friend attacks if they manage to got hit by this user
almost all MH3 player i seen so far are LS user who play like this, they never think about team work and think they deal the damage, they did, if they use the right LS, and about 75% of them didn't
i do see some good LS user, who think/ never hit their friends, or know when & not hit their friends, i'm on the this list, but i dunno how to deal damage as good as some ppl
hammer : jack of all trade, master of KO, and 1 of the fastest killer in MH history (as in all MH)
hammer, like great sword, allow you to deal great damage by single hit, and unlike GS who have to remain in 1 spot to start their charge, hammer charge are weaker, but can be re-aimed since you can move while charging
and most of hammer hits dealt KO damage when they connect to the head/face of monster, and this KO will bring down enemy every once in a while (monster are more resistant to take another type of status effect after they already got 1)
and on that moment, hammer can choose which part to break, or hit the weakest part to deal damage on its own, and while it slow, it is faster than GS, have more power than GS, and able to deal exhaust status
you do realize most of hammer attack deal this KO status, when they hit the face, but when they doesn't, they will deal exhaust status, while hitting face deal both KO & exhaust
exhaust damage allow you to tire out monster, they will be slower even compared to normal mode, stops attacking most of the time, and stay in a trap much longer than it supposed to be
not all hammer user are your friend tho, again, those who aim and those who doesn't
but hammer have more type, those who don't know shit
not all monster are weak on their face, and these who don't know doesn't realize this, and usually hard to taught them to stop doing it
lance : jack of all trade, master killer, and really bad at breaking stuff
lance get HUGE upgrade, or 1 upgrade to made all weapon upgrade seem useless, that is called counter
unlike previous MH when you have to block and release your block to attack, MH3 lance allow you to block, then launch another attack after you block an attack
it is advise to block 1st when you use lance, every monster in MH have 1 weakness, their attack only hit once, which mean, even after you got hit, you can't get hit again until you completely stand, and lance shield allow you to make it as subtitute, example: you can never got hit by rathian charge after you block it, even if you seem to still inside her, while it doesn't stop charging, it will hit you if do another type of attack tho
the old lancer method is to use this moment to counter and damage monster before the next attack, and counter in this series allow you to keep attacking since it can cancel your attacks, you do realize some attack on this game can be cancelled by roll, rite? where lance use step to stop it, and on MH3 it allow you to use counter to stop it and allow lance to keep attacking while monster is unable to attack you
but really, 1 of the VERY base knowledge of lance is, DO NOT USE LANCE CHARGE unless you are sure you are not hitting anybody & need to use it as mean to approach monster
lance issue is it kill so fast that it tend to kill something 1st before it break enemy parts

Thanks again Nhezu, Varutieru. Varu's post reminded me that I never really understood the "part breaking" concept. Does it boil down to if you hit a certain part of a monster hard enough/often enough (head or tail I'm assuming?) you're more likely to get a certain item from them or...?
I've been experimenting with the Switch Axe a bit in Moga Woods and I'm doing alright, though the lack of a block is annoying even though I'm able to cancel out of most of my attacks. Main thing is I need to learn about it now is when to switch to the sword form and which attacks are the most useful in what situations. Might try the hammer or GS next, I tried the lance back when I started and I don't really think it's my style in this, but after some practice I may change my mind.

Does it boil down to if you hit a certain part of a monster hard enough/often enough (head or tail I'm assuming?) you're more likely to get a certain item from them or...?There are specific items that cannot be obtained unless you break something off a monster (tails, mane, wings, etc). To know what you're attacking is good to know as some monsters have elemental weakness on that area that may cause even higher damage. This is also applied to what type of weapon you have, as in Impact (hammer/greatsword) or Cut (all slashing weapons). Fun fact: Lance applies both of these. Usually the knowledge of a weak spot isn't known until you see others striking it (some others just solely focus on known spots such as the head) so it's good to be aware.
