ps3 is my console of choice, it appeals to the casual gamer and devoted alike. has a blu-ray player too! i agree that it was extremely silly of sony to release newer models with fewer features. i mean, not only did they rid the system of backwards compatibility but now they only have 2 usb ports instead of 4! i understand that the idea looked good on paper, not everyone who buys a ps3 will want these things. but why wouldnt they continue to make both? i would easily pay 100 dollars more for those two things alone. why appeal to the more casual gamer and not a more devoted fan of their past systems?Casual gamer you say? lol, go buy a wii. The PS3 has nearly no casual gamer appeal except for LBP and R&C, even the xbox 360 has way more casual gamer appeal then the PS3!
And they reduced the price because most people wouldn't pay that much for those features, and not only were and are still getting pressure for how expensive a PS3 is compared to a xbox 360 and wii.

what i was trying to imply is that they should have offered both models for varieties sake, more then half of my friends who own a ps3 are dissapointed that the older 60 gigs arent available anymore as they purchased theirs after the transition. so what with the price? having both to choose from expedites that problem, and slowly but surely they would both get cheaper.
as for your remark about the wii: you have a point but imo wii is for someone who enjoys the novelty of the system. its definately for a casual player but its more of a family console, i find it hard to call titles like wii fit games anyhow. dont get me wrong though, i myself have a wii... its just i hardly play it, its only been turned on a couple times recently because of twilight princess.
ps3 offers great alternatives for casual players with independent games such as pixel junk eden and worms, these are games that have little to no learning curve and can be enjoyed by everyone. theres even retail games such as lbp as you said that could appeal to just about anyone. what about titles such as guitar hero and rock band? your right about the 360 though, they offer a similar line up but 360 has the more expansive library, thus appealing to a wider audience.
still like ps3 better though :3

The wii has rockband and guitar hero as well, and the PS3 arcade library is a joke to the xbox 360's arcade library which has over 1000 downlandable games.

It's just cheaper to make a PS3 with no backwards compatibility. But there's no reason to stop selling the PS2 compatible models. When I bought my PS3, I was disappointed to find out that they didn't sell the version I wanted anymore.
Money. Money makes the world go round and if Sony can cut costs on Ps3 production and in turn reduce the price of the PS2 as for the difference ($100 off the ps3) then they will and they did.
Using that logic, shouldn't Sony cut out the Blu-ray shit because it'd make the console even cheaper?
I can understand Sony wanting to save money, but it is bullshit to offer a version of the PS3 with backwards-compatibility at one time and then stop offering that version. And if the PS3 with backwards-compatibility cost an extra $100 and a PS2 cost $100, then the consumer would be spending the same amount of money, except they wouldn't have to worry about having more shit connected to their TV, which can actually be a problem. Not everyone wants to, or even can, have multiple consoles connected to the same TV. You can't just snap your fingers and have space for a PS3, a PS2, a Wii, and an Xbox in front of your TV.

I gotta go with the 360 seeing as it is a perfect blend of price and game variety. The Wii isn't all that good with next to worthless games (although i will admit that the Wii has SOME decent games, just not many of em) and the PS3 is just too expensive.

I will agree that Sony having BC PS3s then taking it away soon after was a bad move. They should have not bothered with it to begin with. The question then becomes "Why hasn't Sony released a downloadable emulator for at least partial PS2 compatibility?"

They are trying to sell as many consoles as they possibly can to get both a blu ray in every home and increase software sells. The main complaint with the PS3 is the price. They fixed that with the cutting of BC but it seems that was the wrong move in some people's opinions.

Cause they know people would take it off the PS3 and put it on a PC or they would would then have the ability to have perfect running games on the PS3 or Pc. Increasing piracy etc. A vicious cycle really.

This probably is the same reason you don't hear anyone ripping out the emulator from the 360 or the emulator from certain PS3 models and putting it on the computer.

Wouldn't they be able to simply download a game and emulate it on the PS3 tho? I am sure that someone would find a way even if Sony put something in to block that. Just pirating a game, then USBing it or media stick or even hooking the PS3 up to a computer to emulate the game. That would only cause more problems.

Sony could also make mandatory updates to its firmware whenever the console is online to get rid of 'questionable' data.

Sony Fiscal 2008 Financial Results
(if anyone cares)
â– Sony lost $1.035 billion this year.
â– The gaming division lost $612 million this year, but this is less than half of what they lost last year, so the division is improving financially.
â– PS3 hardware sales are up, PSP hardware sales are up slightly, and PS2 hardware sales are down significantly.
â– PS3 software sales are up significantly, PSP software sales are down, and PS2 software sales are down significantly.
â– The PS3 sold 10 million units, the PSP sold 14 million units, and the PS2 sold 8 million units in 2008.
â– Sony is expecting to sell 3 million more PS3's this year than they did in either 2007 or 2008. They are also expecting to sell 1 million more PSPs and 3 million less PS2s than they did in 2008.
Also, A mysterious advertisement in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine seems to confirm a new game from Hideo Kojima is about to be announced.

People say the see everything from Wiimotes and Mario's to Solid Snake in the clouds.

Other theories

Maybe it's MGS4 for the 360

Yep. This time it isn't some special. It's gonna be the full game.
http://www.google.com/search?q=MGS+for+360&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
There are other rumors saying they might make all the other MGS games for the 360 so we can follow the story instead of just having some weird shit thrown at us.
Too bad God of War 3 can't come out on PS3. It's a Sony owned company. Epic sadness.

That's so old and not true. 2007? Either they were a whole year ahead of the "rumor" of a MGS 360 or they can see the future. Also LOL at a wii MGS.
EDIT:

True this news is old but the reason being is downgrading a blu-ray disc to a normal disc is diffcult. They are trying though.
When 5 years pass and no progress is made I'll say it's as dead as Starcraft: Ghost.

MGS fanboys are scary in their speculations. I am personally not seeing any of that stuff there. They always release their new stuff in weird ways like this with countdowns and what not.

I'm sure i saw a discussion of Kojima saying it was a new IP...or probably only a ''new project'' Too bad 7 days in Fallujah didn'T work out. I though it was a great idea. But no, American has to whine.

Those are your typical NeoGAF pictures (Assuming that's where Klown got them from). Hey, you gotta keep some topics alive somehow.

We all see weird things in clouds, I guess the same applies for video game clouds.
And on a side note I am simply amazed that this topic has managed to last this long

For the skeptics that don't see anything in the clouds:
I can actually see where the people are coming from. Clouds are very easily blended into the background, but if you look at the areas that the people have pointed out where they see things, it looks like a blatant stupidity of the graphic designer to not blend the 3D elements in. Look closely and you might see what I'm talking about. Not that I'm actually convinced it's going to be MSG on 360, but it's something the developers are trying to show us.
