MG Rising: Revengeance -The Rant and Love Corner-
0
Before I just go in, I want to do two things. One is to specify that this thread was originally a result of me believing that posting my views on this game in a thread promoting it would be horribly trollish and unfair to those hyped for it.
EDIT: The second thing is to say that this thread has become a place for people hyped for the game and those not-so-hyped to discuss and cheer together, which is why I've redubbed this thread "the rant and love corner", so that it can be fair to everybody who posts here.
Below are my thoughts, but you can go to more recent pages for the hype vids and such. Discuss away!

My opinion
Now if you saw that and said, "Oh, this is gonna be fucking sweet!", you might find my views to be a downer.
Brief history lesson: So you got MGS4 which was such a big hit people bought PS3s just to play it. It was, in many aspects, a masterpiece. It managed to tie up all the loose ends of the entire franchise (though the end result was segmented exposition in the middle of cutscenes and kinda convoluted) and give a true feeling of closure for everyone. Some characters had bitter sweet endings, some had hopeful ones, then there was one that, despite what we were led to believe the entire game, got their happy ending.
_From being born into war and trained to be a blood-soaked killer, to being manipulated, butchered and losing limbs, Jack had quiet possibly suffered the most out of the entire cast of the MGS series. Some of it was due to his own fault (alcoholism and such), but most of it was from external forces stronger than him taking control of his piteous life. When gamers saw Jack, code named Raiden, as a Cyborg Ninja, they saw a transformation into an incredible badass.
_When Metal Gear Solid fans saw him, they saw a future akin to Grey Fox. It was amazing to see him in action, but heartbreaking, knowing that in exchange for that power he'd given up his humanity. Our heartbreak was secured when we got that codec call from him and we learned from Rose the troubles at home.
By the end we were ready to see both him and Snake 6 feet under. Some of us were outraged. Some were depressed. But ultimately we knew where this was headed. The writing in MGS4 was so well done we were prepared for the melancholy end.
_However, our necks ached happily from the plausible whiplash that came to us instead. Jack, Rose, and their son were going to be together, and we believed that their promises to each other meant something. We believed Raiden, through his efforts and through Snake's, would finally have peace.
Cut to Metal Gear Solid: Rising's debut trailer. MGS fans were told this title would be focused more on action and have Raiden as the protagonist again, but it would entail how he became the Cyborg Ninja of MGS4. Not bad, right? It'd be pretty nice to see.
MGS: Rising goes silent for a while, so silent, in fact, that many forgot about it entirely. Then recently a new trailer came out, and for those of us who hadn't been keeping up with the Rising news, the change of scenery was so jarring it nearly blinded us.
[size=10]...Fucking nearly wanted to go blind after watching this Grindhouse bullshit...[/h]
Platinum Games came on board and changed things up. A lot. Some would say to a surprising degree. I would say TO A FUCKING MURDEROUS DEGREE! Murderous as in:
-The death of tact
-The death of character proper development/resolution
-And, worst of all: The death of that peace Raiden deserved
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is as horrible as the juvenile title suggests in terms of treating a character properly. Just look at that trailer. That is grotesque on so many levels it's blatantly obvious and not even worth going deep into. The title is idiotic. The dialogue is brain dead. On that note- Samurai? Why would Raiden care about the code of the samurai? HE'S A FUCKING NINJA!!
And don't even get me started on how we're presumably meant to be hyped about Jack going back to his war title of the "Ripper"...
Yet, as if all that wasn't dumb enough, the fact that it takes place AFTER MGS4 is what's really mind-blowing painful.

So, that's it. I'm happy they at least took "solid" off the title. It's the only thing I can be happy for.
What about you guys? Think I'm just a stick in the mud? Agree with me? I can rage for a week, but that's not the reason I made this thread. I want to know what you guys think, my fellow Fakkuite gamers.

I strongly agree, the game doesn't look like a tactile game like the other mgs games, i preferred the first version.

haha... when his making raiden this powerful.. who need to hide... but this is a whole new MGS game.. hope this is another great game from kojima

Metal Gear Cry? Devil May Rising?.... no idea xD
I'm a huge MGS fan and my main concern is that this could turn out to be just a regular action game which doesn't touch on much of Raidens story if at all. Or rather if it does add good story elements mainly me wanting to see Raiden get all those attachments and me wanting to see how Raiden got Sunny out of that Patriot facility.
I have high hopes though, this won't be a MGS game, I mean that's why it's Metal Gear Rising. So with that in mind and Platnum studios behind developing it should be at least a blast to play and should be good...
Oh I never saw that article that says it takes place after 4... My hype meter just dropped a little, I hope for their sake that it, hmm I dunno maybe even if it takes place after 4 they could still go over the stuff that happens between 2 and 4. Flashback segments.

Well. No more Metal Gear Solid, that's a given.
But seriously... WHAT THE HELL!? :D
Going around with Cyber-Raiden doin' stuff Bayonetta style? I'm so getting this when it comes out.
And BTW, not to discourage the author of this thread, but I never played MGS4 (I own a Xbox 360, not a PS3), and even after seeing it entirely on Youtube, my favourite are still the first for PSX and MGS3 Snake Eater. Maybe I'm old school =\

This is being made by the Bayonetta team. Not Kojima. Expect this to be Bayonetta 2 but with Metal Gear characters. Stop being all butthurt.

I'm neutral with this. If they can make it an "epic action" game then it's going to be epic.

But...Metal Gear Solid...was never always about just the action...Not just that, mate. Metal Gear Solid was one of the few series that was against reveling in violence. In no game was there ever a moment where the protagonist enjoyed killing.
Unless you listen to Liquid, but he's a D-Bag anyway, so-
Seriously, though. This game should just be something else entirely. For it to have "Metal Gear" attached to it is confusing because of the theme, which is literally "Let's have fun slicing people alive".
What's rage-inducing about all this is it's RAIDEN! Raiden is probably the biggest example of the horrors of war and mass murder. His whole tortured existence is a testament to the realities of war, and later on his transformation symbolizes his desperate struggle to at least break someone free of the cycle of meaningless bloodshed brought on by the old feud between Zero and Big Boss.
I mean... Did they even read his wikipedia page? I only ask because I severely doubt anyone at Platinum Games gave enough of a crap to really get to know the character or even play MGS2.
Metal Gear was always about the story, its just that it had a brain behind it that knew how to balance the plot with the action out. Yes, the tech got pretty outlandish and yes, there were a number of odd or goofy moments. BUT! Metal Gear is a character driven story, and if there's one thing Kojima and his cronies knew best, it was how to create believable characters we could grow attached to and develop them like human beings.
Meryl and Snake's bathroom conversation in MGS1
Snake and Otacon's handshake in MGS2
Jack and Rose's major revealing moment in MGS2
The tension and relationship between Eva and Snake in MGS3
The death of the Boss in MGS3
Cyborg Raiden's reveal in MGS4
Snake's age and his coming to terms with his own mortality in MGS4
And, of course, the ending of the whole Metal Gear Solid Series
That's just to name a few!
Every moment, both nuanced and explosive moments alike, resonate in the MGS fanbase. The characters were written so well you could even say they took on a life of their own all the way until the end. This is what Metal Gear Solid was about. Beneath the conspiracy, beneath the giant robots, beneath the deus ex machinas and technobabble, the story was really about the characters and how each of their lives are affected by war...and their struggle to break free from it.
Then comes along Platinum Games, saying: "Fuck that! Look at how Raiden throws a robot and slices up that guy! Fuckin' cool, right?"
WRONG! It's not cool. It's missing the whole fucking point of the series and a horrible attempt at ruining one of the most complex characters of the entire story!
If you lot love action, then fine. Enjoy. I won't judge. I really dig Devil May Cry and the story there (aside from 3) is pretty...well, it takes second billing to the badass action. However, before you call those who feel the same as me sticks in the mud, just first try to understand what's really at play here, what's really being taken away and trampled on with this game.

first devil may cry now this? You know, mate, while that game is an utter waste of funding and possible talent, at least DMC fans can just ignore it. It doesn't have anything to do with the previous series so we can just turn the other way. Everytime I watch a trailer of that game I play a little DMC3.
Man do I love that game.
However, with this we can't do anything but look at it. It stars Raiden and is voiced by Jack's VA (Quinton Flynn, who I won't harp on because voice actors get pittance these days and he's a very good actor outside of the hack job he did in this trailer). Worst of all, it takes place in the MGS storyline, after 4. If it was just a psychedelic non-canon trip ala ACiD, we could ignore this abomination and affront to our sensibilities a bit easier (though ACiD is better than this garbage). It would anger us, but it could just be considered Metal Gear fluff. We'd be able to leave it in the bin with that new DmC.
The equivalent would be if the new DmC suddenly had our true Dante as a side character acting like an introverted nerd despite being clothed the same and having the same voice actor as before, and that it took place after DMC4.
...And after writing that gruesome hypothesis I need to go vomit.

It's really starting to aggravate me just how much some people are hating this game's idea. People are acting like this game is going to ruin the franchise. Some people are saying, toward the creation of MGS5 later on, that "It better be stealth" and other things implying that the series is taking this action genre as a permanent turn. It really annoys me how quick people are to hate something when, one, they know very little about the game so far (wait for a story trailer to start whining at least) and two, they're just so strongly against any kind of change--granted, a shift from the usual stealth to action is a major one, but this is a spin-off, ergo it will not become the norm of the Metal Gear Solid series, let alone have any major affect(s) the series.
All of these people who are so avidly complaining about the idea of the game really need to shut up, and just wait for MGS5. Or they could be better people by realizing the game for what it is and have the best of both worlds by playing, and maybe even enjoying, both games--main series and sub.

Hideko Kamiya (Bayonetta) has said several times now that he is not the director, so this is not his work, ergo it will not be "Bayonetta 2" in that sense.

I'll wait for a story trailer to see what I think. MGS Acid was different and I heard that game was pretty good and received a bit of hate.

The Metal Gear series ended with Metal Gear Solid 4. Period. Any Metal Gear game that comes after it is viewed by me as a spin-off and won't be judged the same as a main series game. That is especially apparent with this game
So, I really have no problems with this game being different. Hell, it was obvious from the beginning that it would be different. And I'm really, really, really glad that Kojima won't be involved. It's no secret that he wanted to end the series a long time ago. And it became painfully obvious in MGS4, which was a plead to finally let the series end and a "fuck you" to everyone who wouldn't let him end it. It was nearly embarrassing to play it, since it was like admitting that you are a dumb fanboy, who can't let things that should finally rest come to an end.
Well, being the dumb fanboy that I am, I won't stop buying Metal Gear games because of that. But it wouldn't feel right if Kojima made it, since he really should be able to do the one thing he desperately wants: To finally move on.
But I guess it doesn't matter how many times Kojima shows the fans his middle finger. They just can't or don't want to understand...

Relevant to how their acting
But in all seriousness this game looks good they decide to take a change from the stealth genre and look towards action its not like its the end of the world >_>
