Final Fantasy 8 Interpretation

Personally I like IX quite a bit. I mean, their first non-angsty character in about 3 games. Up until one point where zidane becomes emo and depressed for certain reasons not being said here due to spoiler and me being to lazy to write the spoiler tag.
Anyways, I liked FFIX straight up until the las...t...boss..who the hell was necron anyways? seriously. Because he's never mentioned in the game. Ever. Usually last bosses are something/someone mentioned repeatedly throughtout the storyline.
But nooooooo, they just threw necron in there.
But my favorite FF will probably be X. Because it actually has a sad ending. One that could probably bring a tear to my empathetic eyes if I played again. Up until X-2 came around and hopped on the happy ending bandwagon. I don't believe X-2 exists. I believe it's what replaced duke nukem forever after duke nukem forever being something so damnedably good was suddenly erased from existence and our memories for being that damned good, and being replaced by something obviously crappy.

I think the creators just left it for us to decide whether or not Squall died, if it was a dream and all, or not. But considering the title "Final Fantasy" and also being a die hard fan of all FF's, Squall didn't die and "hero takes all" ftfw. (for the fkin win).

Can someone sum it up, Im too lazy to read that whole thing for a game that I thought was just meh...

The funny thing is I had the urge to replay FFVIII a few days before this was posted.
Basically, the guy believes that the ice spike killed Squall at the end of disc one and discs 2 and up are just a dream that he is having before he dies.

Just had to post a comment after reading that stuff. Well first off, let's get this out of the way: Holy S**T! ...ehm that explains a lot. It might not necessarily be the way they meant it but this way the ending makes a lot more sense and thus I'd certainly like to believe this to be the truth.
Anyway, very cool and a great read. If you find more cool stuff like this please do share :P

I read the theory, and it really does seem like a logical explanation for all of the events of the game. I never actually beat ultimecia, so I never knew that the ending went like this. I only have one question though... If this is all a dream, could Ellone's ability to alter it have caused most of the post-1st disk incidents?

The theory makes sense but also makes me wonder how Squall could have such a knowledgeable mind on these events.

Moombas, they never talked in disc one, but they did after it. And that optional village was very creepy, more so since it was a "spiritual" fetch quest, but the thing did seem really odd. It also makes this seem as Moombas are like "spirit guides" in this case.
It would be funny that fans are mad at the wrong thing, their time wasted on a time loop, or wasted on events that never took place.
Seriously, if he did die then, what happened in the "real?" Too bad Square doesn't like to go back on the newer games too much.

To be honest while it's interesting and thought was obviously put into it, I don't buy the theory at all. Simply I don't think Squall has that good of an imagination. If he does then he should be saved since he's apparently a technological genius. Just look at all the incredible technology that we saw later in the game. Could Squall have seriously come up with any of that?
The key to the theory is the injury. Why would Edea have saved Squall? It's just as possible it was an act of resistance by Edea who wanted to save that child she knew. Perhaps she persuaded Ultamecia to think saving Squall might have some benefits. Besides it's a game and the main character surviving an incredible injury isn't that strange. He has a plot shield after all.
Unbelievable things like a new recruit saving the world are normal things in a fantasy universe. It hardly helps the theory to say these cliches must mean it was all just a dream. If so then quite a few games and anime's made over the years must have just been dreams from the innocent leads when they were young.
Anyways would rather not try to deal with every point in this theory. Just wanted to say I really don't buy it. It's an interesting theory, but I don't think it resolves things as nicely as the author would like to believe.

Well I don't agree at this being the worst FF, as a matter of fact its one of my fave storylines. The theory is completely plausible, when I read that I was kinda enlightened as to all the weird stuff was explained.(well not all XD)

Wow this thread hit me like lighting. I was tired of staring sadly at my old copy of FF8 and finally just bought it on PSN, then I log on here and see this big ol thread in my face.
Wow.
Still, its a cool theory and all but I paid a little too much attention to the story (played through it 11 times) and that theory just isnt possible to me. It would be cool if it was though.
I left a comment with my name on it if you wanted to see what I had to say about it.
Wow. That made me see the game in a whole other way. O.O It almost had me too until I noticed a few minor details he missed and a few things he(or they) fed off of a little too much to support their theory.
PROUD FF8 NERD HAST SPOKEN! AMAZED THEE BE!

Rinoa is by far my favorite FF girl. The game is up in the air for me, it was my first FF and I really loved it, but it's not the best imo.

cool interpretation but i believe this what really happen
1.part where squall figths edea for the frist time
as the ceremony begins Sorceress Edea kills the President and claims Galbadia as her own. Discovering Seifer alive and standing next to the Sorceress as her Knight, Squall takes his position with Irvine as the rest of the SeeDs takes theirs. As leader of the assassination team, if the sniper should fail to hit his target, he must fight the Sorceress himself. Irvine seems to choke, however, but after some talking to Squall, he fires at the Sorceress. She uses a magic field to stop the bullet. Squall then jumps down to the parade grounds, and fights his way through Seifer, and eventually reaches Edea. After the battle, Edea casts her limit break, the Ice Strike, which impales Squall through the shoulder, "rendering him unconscious".
2.last part where squall beats Ultimecia
After an epic final battle that traversed time and space, Ultimecia finally met her demise at the hands of Squall, the "Legendary SeeD," and his friends. Upon the conclusion of the final battle, Ultimecia and Squall are taken back in time to Edea's Orphanage. It is there that Squall not only witnessed his own self as a boy, but also implanted to Edea the ideas of SeeD and Garden. After witnessing the moment in which Ultimecia passed on her Sorceress Power to Edea, he fell back into compressed time where "he nearly died"; fortunately, though, Rinoa and his team believed in his existence enough to bring him back to his time and live. During the party at Balamb Garden to celebrate SeeD's victory over Ultimecia, Squall smiled at Rinoa for the first time and kissed her at the balcony.

Part of me loves the game because it was the first FF that I actually sat down and played seriously (I played FF7 afterwards).
But the other part of me is well aware that the story requires major assumptions on the part of the audience to even approach something sensible. And the less said about the battle system the better. Junctioning magic was just a broken system on so many levels.

Very entertaining read. Definitely sparks some ideas but I gotta say.. No....
He's basing it too much from reality. Not much will come out from that from a Fantasy Adventure genre too begin with.
So no... He's thinking too much into it. But I really need to repeat this since. IT WAS REALLY ENTERTAINING!
One key point I liked FF8 for.. Simple story. It didn't become too convoluted. It was sticking out pretty much as a simple story that I came to love. Nothing too confusing. Hence the choice that FF8 was my most favorite of all.
Oh and also... minus rep for the author for saying "Eyes on me" is a horrible song... What the hell!? That was the best theme song the FF franchise ever had. Repeat that again punk!! >:(

I have to say I find the concept daft, just a load of people who have to much time on their hands when they SHOULD BE HERE!!! *cough* ...
Anyway, I read the comments on that site and one person said if you gave a lot of thought into one thing you can put any kind of theory and make it seem plausible (I believe the lion king being about nazi's and hitler was the example he used), I have to agree with that person.
And I can't help but notice that all of those theory's are based on the english subs, and something we all know is that translators don't always get it right, even if they try they're hardest. I'm not sure how close the FF english translations are to the actual Japanese texts, but I don't think FF8 was that brilliant a game for it to have that amount of thought plonked into it for something that almost puts the entire game plot into meaningless drivel and that energy used which couldn't be spent on something a bit more useful. Though I didn't hate FF8.
Though, to give them credit, I'm glad they said that it was just a theory. At least they aren't shoving this idea around like its absolute gospel. And it was a pretty interesting read. It's nice to be reminded of a game you haven't played in a long time, and it almost makes me want to play it, so I can compare there idea with my own by playing it through and seeing if it holds any stick.
Well done guys, you've just advertised FF8 for Square Enix! <3
