@hinagiku: rep still serves its purpose because there users who use rep correctly as a tool of appreciation, not something for kicks. That's why I feel it's worth saving, hence this thread.

Perhaps the -rep function should be taken away, as it'll force users to think more carefully on what deserves a rep, and only "deserve" rep. But as I mentioned before, even the +rep function is abused, e.g. people being nice or cutesy or ignorant of the system and rules. Both rep functions from what I've seen have been abused, and this is my call to the community to tell them to start using rep wisely, or else rep becomes meaningless in value and we would be better off getting rid of rep than keeping it.

To note, I feel that the +rep function has been used properly in a couple of ways:
1. Contributions: Uploads, requests, pictures
2. Users: intelligence, appropriate comedy, relatability

Anything beyond that to me spells abuse of the +rep function.

To note, I feel that the -rep function has been used properly in the following manner:
1. Relevance: off-topic, flippant/superficial posts
2. Behavior: offensive, racist, trolling types

Anyone is free to disagree or agree with me. I'm posting what I believe to be the ideal usage of both rep functions as it should be.

This post is my exact feeling on the matter, but unfortunately we can't fix the rep system, we can only hope users fix how they use it.

It wouldn't be a karma system if you didn't have negative reputation. Some people deserve to be -repped as people who deserve +repping.

Ugh, now I wish this was in Random because someone would have locked this trainwreck by now. Everyone who is going to, has already voiced their opinions, it's only useless bitching back and forth now.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that merely your standards of repping? Because the admins have not clearly stated how to use reps it's very subjective and as helpless as we are we have no say in how other people are supposed to use their reps. Wait I think I have an evidence of that

As you see here even Jacob thinks everyone has the right on how to use their reps. If so then there really is no clear rule about the rep system. And if the admins think so then what right do us users have to push our standards to other people?

Also please take note that I did not use Jacob as an example to appeal to authority or popularity. I merely used his post as an example to show how some of those with power feel about the system.

@Tsurayu: If you count the scuffle between me and PD, then yes most users have already voiced their opinions. I, however, do not see this topic worthy of being locked as it was one user trying to pick a fight with me. Tsurayu, if you hate this topic and see it something so useless, stop coming here because all you are doing is same thing that you are accusing me of doing, and this being annoying with repeat opinions.

@hinagiku: Does it look like I'm trying to force my opinion on others? There's only so much a USER can do, and I am voicing my opinion on what I think is right. If you think it is right or wrong or lacking, by all means post away. So far, you keep attacking my position on what I'M saying. What do you have to say about the appropriateness of the usage of rep? I defined to me what is appropriate and took the time to spell it out for discussion. Do the same, and I'll entertain any further debate with you. Until then, your posts are like ballast that does not contribute to this topic, though your earlier ones do. This topic was made in response to another thread and as an advisory thread. Everyone here is free to ignore it or take note of it.

I'm most certain that it was not your intention to push your opinion on others but please consider this. Earlier you have noted that "people can get rep from ridiculous ways" which is pointed at Lol12. This is similar to saying "those who repped him abused their +rep" am I not right? While I agree that it is truly unsightly for such a post to gain reps I would not agree to how you said it. An evidence that users felt like you were pushing your opinion on them is PD over there. I can guess that he probably felt like you were telling him how to use and not to use his rep when in it is his right to decide. Here's an evidence of that:

Now I am not attacking your opinion and let me tell you that your view is very valid. It's just that in expressing your opinion that way, you may have pushed your standards on others without noticing it which may be suffocating to the receiving end.

@hinagiku: Perhaps, and I thank you for telling me something that I might have been unaware of. But if I was so pushy in my views, I'd be telling everyone do this and do that - I'm not, or at least I'm trying not too since I haven't used any command words. I'm spelling out what I think is right and wrong and hopefully people can come away with the notion of what is right and wrong in terms of rep usage, and pleading with the community to please, please use rep more wisely.

I don't think you need to worry with how long I've been here without doing that, but if I do, be sure to tell me (though I can't say for sure I'll listen depending on my mindset).

Because I'm tired of arguing about it. I'm advocating something, only to be doing it myself by voicing how tired I am of the fact that this topic is still going.

You're welcome. Worry not old one (you're an elder status user lol) tis human nature to feel intruded in when other people tries to show them their mistake. I am aware that all of those things you said are just your opinions and none of them should directly affect users. I respect you voicing out your thoughts and I appreciate that our talk ended rather pleasing (compared to my other debates with certain individuals). I am sure what you have shared and what others have showed would give users and those in power something to think about. And as I mentioned before, I'm making a general plea to community to get their heads strapped on right and set their hearts in the right place. I can only do so much to fix a system that deserves some saving since it still means something.
