Are guns such a bright idea? Ammo is going to be hard to find!Well, yes. It's true that ammo will be a problem. But I prefer fighting zombies at a range rather than up close. The risk of getting infected is significantly higher when fighting them toe-to-toe, by way of open wounds getting splashed with their blood or saliva.
There are ways to ensure you do not come in contact with any bodily fluids from zombies.
Protective clothing, I presume. This is true to an extent, but can you be highly certain there are no rips and tears in your clothing? If there are, it would render your otherwise protective gear useless, would it not?
And as Domu said, there is the concept of scavenging. Note the choices in weapons Domu and I made. Are they not common to find?
Anyways, I'm not trying to make you accept my point of view. Just wanted to show you that, despite what you think, the people who chose to use guns base it on careful and deliberate consideration.
@Tsujoi: The guns should be used sparingly, and only in situations where there are no other choices. So when facing a herd, run. Run like there's no tomorrow.
I'm fairly certain half the desire for the usage of guns in such a crisis comes from the romanticism of the concept. But, we have to think of zombies as retaining as many of their senses after being infected. They obviously have their sense of sight, and their sense of hearing most importantly. It's safe to assume that they would be attracted to the loud noises a gun makes when being fired. That combined with the issue of running out of ammo makes the usage of guns a bad idea. You shoot one zombie, the rest in the area would be alerted and would follow the sound. You would be making your situation worse!
No, the key to survival in a zombie apocalypse is not going gun crazy. It's gathering enough fuel for heating, food, water, and viable shelter and keeping out of densely populated areas. As such, the probability of survival in a city is fairly low. You will run out of ammo fairly quickly. So in a situation where you're in a city, and need to get out, the best option is to scavenge supplies, avoid contact with the undead, possibly even other living people, and slowly make your way out of the city.
You have to consider how far sound travels. You may shoot one zombie in an area you're passing through, camp there for the night, as it seems fairly safe, and the next day you'd probably be swarmed with them, making exiting that area more difficult that necessary.
Covering your body to avoid contact with a zombie's bodily fluids is important. A quick and easy way to avoid coming into contact with bodily fluids is to cut up a tarp to fit your body, use some sort of rope to tighten it across your body where necessary, and then find a thick pair of leather gloves, and some sort of thick(non cloth) mask that will cover your face. That, combined with a blunt weapon, sharp weapon, and a means to knock zombies away without using your actual arms/hands would be the best way to secure yourself. You will not run out of ammo, your body will be very safe from coming into contact with a zombie's bodily fluids, and those are not even the most important factors in surviving. The most important factor is to AVOID CONTACT WITH ZOMBIES! Head to RURAL areas! Secure multiple exits to where you're camping out at, don't make noise, don't make fires out in the open, and avoid people as much as you can.
This shit has been covered many times through comics, movies, and books! Why the hell do numb skulls still insist on USING GUNS? It's like screaming, "RIGHT OVER HERE, LOL. DINNER IS SERVED!".

I figured a gun or two like a shotgun and a couple other types (I don't know shit about guns).
And then a close range weapon...like a battle axe.

For guns, it'll need ammo. For close range, it'll get rusty because of the blood.
In case there are zombies I think I'll just throw and smash their head with chair...
EDIT : Or with my father's guitars, it's quite heavy

Swords or axes will not get rusty, Kuro vi Lolitannia. Are you some sort of dork? It's called wiping it off after you're done. Shouldn't be too hard to find something to use?

...Will not get rusty? Wiping it off? Not that simple.
You need to polish it too, and it'll also becomes blunt, so you also need whetstone.

Hmmm... For melee, I'd say something on the lighter side, so a Katana, or Baseball Bat. Maybe a machete, but that's pretty close distance for me. I'd than go for a standard side arm. Maybe a 9mm Pistol. And than a standard Assault Rifle with various attachments.

Sharpening the blade of an axe or a sword would be so much easier than scavenging for goddamn ammo. Where would you find ammo? It would be too hard! Sur, it's there, but where? How much can you carry? Do you seriously think the maintenance of a gun would be easier as compared to a melee weapon?

IMHO, it's easier to fill the ammo than to polish a sword, and a lot safer. Because AFAIK zombies infect you by biting, so an attack from distance will be really useful.
BUT, if it's about gun maintenance, then it's also hard to do. In this case, vehicles, especiall cars/jeeps, will be really helpful to bring the ammo, whetstone, etc.
And it's quite easy to find ammo, especially in America or any other country that has weapon shops. Well, it's indeed a hard to find in country like mine, Indonesia.

The fact that you can attack from a distance is moot! The noise made by shooting a gun would alert other zombies in the area to your presence and crowd you, and then barring any weapon jams, you would eventually run out. Killing a zombie with a sword would make less noise, and allow you to get out of the area undetected.
The chance of getting away from a zombie confrontation is much more slim when confronted with a pack of them.

Del, while I do agree with some of your points, I think it's best to refrain from using insults in your arguments.
And to respond to your previous post, I believe I've touched on some of the same points you did.
Pretty sure I mentioned it should only be used in situations where it’s unavoidable to do so.
Ah, I did. Did I ever mention anything about going “gun crazy”, as you put it? I didn’t.
I never said otherwise.
An easy method, yes. But it still doesn’t answer my question.
Using the aforementioned method you proposed, it would be a good form of protection. But up close? You still run the same risks.
Nobody is forcing you to use guns, should this crisis arise. Why are you so intent on making it seem like guns are a bad choice? It has pros and cons, just as your method has it.

I'd arm myself with allies first. Nobody can survive xxx million zombies alone. Who the heck wants to even fight 15 alone. 3 is already too much. So go find the "eye of the survivors".

If we confronted with pack of them, sword is a bad choice too. We'll need grenades and bazookas.

If we throw grenades and fire bazookas, don't you think that we'll go KABOOM as well?
EDIT:- Bazooka ammo/missile will probably only be found in a military base...

Well, being honest and getting real:
Main weapon: Rifle Galil PNC. (will be the easiest to find because all the military forces in my city have one. And if I'm luck a Galil ACE).
Secondary: Revolver Martial (the cops in my city have them so I guess no problem either)
Melee: Machete or a club (there are plenty of those).
As for armor...mmm maybe a riot police uniform, pretty good for melee and not so heavy to wear it most of the time.
That would help for small packs of zombies, but if you get in the way of the swarm RUUUUUUUUNNNNN!!!.... unless you and your group are ready for it...
If you guys wanna get a more "realistic" feeling of this, you can read this guide and also read this book. Enjoy :)
