Yeah, I saw that. Still scary, even if it isn't the worst meltdown in history...

Yeah, that's the inherit problem with news coverage when it comes from overseas. It is hard to get an accurate gauge on a situation when the information in being cycled through multiple media sources. Still, I'm rather pragmatic enough to assume the worst, so when it turns out to not be as bad as one might assume then you come out all the better.

I managed to get in contact with my close friend in Japan several hours after the initial earthquake, so I'm really relieved that she and the rest of her family is okay.

The stories regarding Governor Ishihara and the unnamed Greenpeace member are disturbing at best, and inhuman at worst. But it isn't terribly surprising. Some people really do believe in the adage "there is no such thing as bad publicity."

That is completely understandable. I've actually been avoiding the news stories on it because stories on disasters kind of freak me out.

That's why I've been watching/listening to NHK, because they usually have the most up to date info/better grasp on the situation.

I've heard about Ishihara and what he was quoted with (which he should be thrown into fire for), but what did the green peace member do? I know Greenpeace in general aren't thrilled with the Japanese due to whale hunting, but I know there's Greenpeace factions in Japan as well, so they have 'their own' kind of people in Japan - so I'm curious what this person said

Well the problem is no one seems to want to release the person's name so who knows if the story is true or not, but essentially the story is similar to Ishihara's. The man is accused of saying something alone the lines of "Well, at least there goes the Japanese whaling fleet."

They did release his name, Paul Watson.

I don't believe that is the same guy. That was a poem, while this one guy was quoted saying similar to what I paraphrased. I'll try to find the site I read that one on and link it with an alleged direct quote.

The whale war dude... well he sooo crazy that he was throw out of greenpeace. Fine your a guy that loves the whales and want to protect them...cool. You mess with the whalers and jive like that.. fine, but to say it revenge from nature because some japanese's killed whale for food(research claim is not valid) then that is just so retarded that i can't even think of anything or person to match that level of retardation. At first, I truly thought that was a joke.....raise your hand if you feel that people like this need to be chucked into a black hole.I thought some of the fictional characters from Chaos; Head and Saya No Uta were sick....this bitch takes the cake.

I second that toss her in a black hole along with Ishihara, there is no need for people like them.

Or, you know, you could wish that nobody was affected instead of saying you wished you could trade one life for another as if a person's nationality affected how valuable they were.

Seems Shintaro Ishihara is being an idiot again. Yeah, you remember Ishihara, governor of Tokyo, the guy who wrote rape fiction novels and then recently came out saying that rape is a bad thing and started regulating anime with that bill? Yeah, him. Seems his opinion on the recent disasters in Japan is that it is "divine punishment", because the "Japanese have become too greedy".

Him aside, everyone, keep the Japanese in your prayers, they really need it right now.

I donated money to the Red Cross. They need it far more than I do right now.

My heart is with all the people in Japan. I've always known that something like that might happen - they've basically been anticipating a huge earthquake for a few years now.

I've been to Japan - Tokyo in particular and experienced my share of Magnitude 1-3 earthquakes. You don't even really feel 1 and 3 is shaking your walking a little. I can't even begin to imagine 8.9...
