I would, its just me but i think that your a selfish coward if you wouldnt. if it came down to a situation where they needed my life for my childs,my wifes, or my mothers, they can have my shit in a heartbeat there really is no reason to think twice.

This is related in a way:
On the Lusitania people only had minutes to get off the boat before it sunk and people drowned. So everyone fought for the remaining life boats regardless of social class or even giving priority to women and children.
However, on the Titanic men gave up their seats to women and children. The difference was the men had hours to ponder before the boat sunk. In that time they decided to give up their safety so others may have a chance to live. So dispite thinking that you may not give up your life for someone else, if given the time and oppurtunity to do you may actually have a change of heart.

Overall depends on a lot of facts that I guess I would need but overall wife and child I'd do whatever it takes to make sure they live even at the cost of my own life. If I had a family I don't think I'd be able to live with myself knowing that I could have stopped their death.

but those people were total strangers if it came down to me and a group of people i met on a 3 hour boat ride hell ya im fighting for my life, but we are talking about people you care about. I doubt very seriously that people were pushing there children in the water for a spot on a boat.
edit: oh i see the Thread starter changed the title.

If it were in a situation like the Titanic, I would sacrifice myself, but in a situation that may actually happen to me, I wouldn't sacrifice myself. This mainly because I wouldn't just roll over and accept death. I would ensure the safety of someone close to me and fight as hard as I can fucking manage to get out alive as well.
Way I see it is if you condemn yourself for a loved one, you don't have to live with regrets, but they do. Sure they would still love you, but they would hate themselves for putting you in a situation where you died for them. They will feel responsible for your death.
In the kind of situation most likely to happen to any one of us, don't take A or B, as both will end badly. Try to take C, since then you can at least say you tried.

This may sound weird, but I totally would. I think that would be the best way to go. I've already lived a full and complete life, and to give my life to save someone I truly love would be the best way for me to leave this world.
Plus, it would probably work off any bad karma I've got saved up.
