even if someone loves you enough or a good enough person to sacrifice their life for you, they might change their mind when it actually comes to it

@Lunar: Sorry for that loss man, there probably isn't a way to describe that feeling of hopelessness. It probably isn't the same but there was someone that made me regret and wish there were things I could've done. It was an online friend, we were pretty tight despite knowing each other for no more than maybe 5 months. On a random chat, I said something that set her off (not sure what it was nowadays) and she disappeared with "Maybe I was better off dead." as her last words. For the following months, I constantly tried to make contact but was unable to reach her, I eventually gave up fearing that the worst case scenario has come to past. I'll never get an answer on what happened after that day. The events aren't the same and I'm most likely not aware of the whole extent of your feelings, but I at least hope I know how you feel.

As for the topic, yeah, I would. No matter what it would take.

Theoretically, yes. I would die for any one of my best friends. Realistically, if I were put in that position... I have no idea.

That'd make a hell of a memory for them, wouldn't it? Some random guy pops around the corner and yells "NOOOOO!" and then he takes the bullet/gets hit by the car/whatever. You just made that persons life.

I would quite happily die for my friends, if I wasn't so determined to live for my family.

In fact, that very way of thinking has got me through a lot.

At the moment, I would not, there's not anyone I deem worthwhile to give my life up for, nor would they want me to if the decision came down to it.

I'm very selfish. it all depends on the person. Course, I would if I liked/loved them. If I hate them, I'd make the situation 100x worse.

What I don't get is that in stories, when someone takes a bullet for someone, why must they do it in a manner that garentees that the bullet they take is fatal? Why can't they take a less fatal route and sacrifice a limb or something?

No. My life is of the utmost importance to me. The reason, I believe, that people say they are willing to sacrifice themselves, is that they either have little to no sense of self worth, or truly underestimate the finality and totality of death.
