It does have backwards compatibility, the 40GB doesn't but hey I have a PS2 for a reason... to play PS2 games.I do understand that it sucks not being able to play PS2 games on a 40GB.
If your a first time Sony buyer, why waste more money to buy a PS2 if you bought the PS3??? Kind of retarded in my opinion. That is why all the windows version has backwards compatibility so you don't have to buy another computer.

Because some people bought the PS3 that can't play PS2 games, just PSone games. Also I already owned a PS2 and when it dies I will buy another one. I would have done this even if I had gotten the 60 Gig PS3 that could play ALMOST ALL the ps2 game, I love the PS2.

I didn't say anything about buying another PS2. I was just saying, that I was lucky to have a PS2, but I have a 80GB PS3 also so I have backwards compatibility. I do see the the downside of not being able to play PS2 games.
If your first buy is a PS3 then might as buy the 80GB one.

Yah I bought a ps2 slim last year. My bulky ps2 died but it had a good long run.One thing I liked about the original PS2 is that it reduced long loading times compared to the slim, but I love my slim lol.

It that case where is the PSP and DS? >_>In the handheld wars topic.
Fair enough, but we have yet to vs them against everything else, so I say why not. I mean they play games too. My phone also.

Does the newly produced Ps3's have backward-compability?Or have they dropped that all together?
They dropped the PS2 compability. You can still play PSX games.

The only PS3 that has been sold recently with ps2 compatibility is the 80g MGS4 The new models won't have it at all.
