The main characters got first in the initial trial; Eiji had to settle for second with the first hundred questionnaires filed, which would serve as a basic outline. But in the "real deal", a randomly selected hundred questionnaires excluding those first hundred, they only managed second. I think that the statement where Eiji's editor is telling him that he got first and second is a bit of a confusion, where's he's trying to relate that although he told Eiji he got second earlier, he really received first. Ie. the editors take in several pools of statistics, with, in this case, inconsistent results. I'd like to know what went down for the third trial, however.

I started reading this yesterday and finished Ch 18 a few mins ago... this is actually pretty interesting...

Mashiro is starting to get on my nerves, Shujin's right, and his narcissistic attitude isn't cute anymore -__-;. But this is still the manga I look forward to the most each week.
