i can't read too much japanese, so language is important, but other than language i would go with artwork.

A throw up between art and story for me. And I think I'd prefer my books and comics in black and white anyday then having them in colour.

I just can't stand reading a doujin if it looks like crap.
That's why the first thing I usually notice is the cover. It's just the first thing that grabs my eye.

The Story and artwork.. Its good to read a nicely drawn doujin that comes with a good storyline :D. The hentai-part doesn't really matter to me, as long as it drawn good.

Good artwork is really neat but what's even more important is the content of the artwork and how the scenes are told , so I voted "Story".
Awesome artwork doesn't get me as far if the subject matter doesn't suit my tastes.
It's a close call though.
Favourite artist is without any hint of doubt Tony "The Godhand" Taka.
If I could I'd hire him to draw me stuff all day till I'm bankrupt.

Voted for Artwork - but wish there had been a "combo" vote - because both artwork and story line together are what makes an outstanding issue .
Agree that Gunma is right up there - but would also think that Juan Gotah would also be in the same rank . (imho)

Artwork, with artists like Kisaragi Gunma, Yamatogawa, or doujin circles like Nise Midi Doronokai, it's definitely artwork for me.

Story for me. I can get in the mood even without the pictures.
And I've yet to encounter a doujin with a good story that doesn't have atleast acceptable artwork, but that may be because I usually download something after looking at the cover.
I don't even bother with those with just sex anymore, as I can mostly get both a good story and erotic content at the same time.

art and story are both important
but broken down...
i find that its easier to enjoy all the aspects of any picture (be it a scribble, or full HD-3d-vector), when there is meaning attached to it, and for me, a good story can do this well.
if i wanted just art (for pure aesthetic pleasure or whatnot) i would buy/search/download acordingly.
So when searching for a manga to read, or a visual novel to play, there is an expectation (if not a requirement) for a meaningful story.

I voted for art but i think that story is very important too. Beautiful but boring is no good... But also excellent story with art making your eyes bleed aren't very good too.

but i gonna say this "if your artwork suck forget about Story"
even u got a very entertaining storyline but when some one see your first page and say artwork isn't my stlye, well u know they don't gonna read that.
i'll say that artwork is something u can easly see more than story. It's just like first impresstion if it bad i hard to change to be better
whatever how great your story r if no one gonna read it couse the artwork is suck it's end of the line

I voted for artwork, but i agree like many others that artwork and story are both important and something isn't really amazing until both are present. Not being able to get into the story because of the art is one thing, but not to have a story to get into is another.
As for my favorite artist, it'd come down to Kisaragi Gunma, or Tony Taka.

I have to go with artwork as well. It must be appealing or I won't look at it. One of my favorite artists is T2. I really like the style.

Artwork definitely, 2nd comes language, then censorship, and then maybe story. If I need a story I'd go read a manga. No matter how good a story would be, I'd be put off by say for example extremely huge tits, supersized nipples, or a guy penetrating another guy.
In my book, there is 2 category of good artwork. 1st is really good artwork for you to look at, and 2ndly is average but erotic artwork. Some authors although can draw really well, but they lack the special touch to draw the positions the characters are having sex in, that makes it so much more erotic.
Kisaragi Gunma is an example where he is good in both. That's why he is so popular. Inu is an artist where his artwork is not beautiful to look at, but I like it nonetheless due to his erotic potrayal of the sexual positions the characters are in. Amano Ameno is a weird example of artist which is good in both too, but I couldn't fully enjoy them due to the theme he uses (scat in every doujin except 1 or 2).
Although sometimes it seems to me that a really good story could make up for the artwork. I couldn't think of an example right now.
